Why would you want a high ISO?
Isabella Bartlett When might you need a high ISO?
Sure, when the light is bright, you can keep the ISO at 100 or 200 and end up with sharp, well-exposed images. But as the light begins to drop, you'll need to raise your ISO with confidence. That way, you can capture bright and clear photos at 300mm, 400mm, and beyond.
Do you want a high ISO or low ISO?
When you use low ISO values such as 300 and lower, generally the result is a higher quality photo. Bright conditions — like shooting outdoors on a sunny day — benefit from lower values. Landscape photography, for example, is very well-suited to low ISO values. They keep photos from looking overly-exposed or washed out.
What's the highest ISO you should use?
While general (professional) candids and documentary photos might be acceptable at ISO 1600-3200, I wouldn't go any higher than ISO 400-1600 for really important portraits.
What does high ISO do to a picture?
The higher the ISO rating, the greater the film's ability to capture images taken in low light. High ISO film was called fast film—it required a shorter exposure than a low ISO film. For digital photography, ISO refers to the sensitivity—the signal gain—of the camera's sensor.
High ISO does NOT cause NOISE! (but f/Stop & Shutter do!)
Does high ISO affect sharpness?
Digital Noise and ISO
Digital noise from a high ISO can affect the sharpness of an image. Applying the best techniques to avoid digital noise is crucial when you're looking for the highest quality in your photos, especially in night photography.
Does high ISO make pictures grainy?
Since ISO plays a vital role within the exposure triangle (how aperture, shutter speed, and ISO interact with each other to make each exposure), your “proper” ISO setting will change based upon many factors. However, one thing is certain, the higher the ISO number, the more grainy your photos will become.
What ISO is best for sunny days?
According to this sunny day rule, if you're using ISO 100, the shutter speed should be 1/100 and the aperture should be f/16. This rule generally produces the best-exposed front-lit photos on a sunny day.
Is 1600 ISO too high?
ISO 800 is half as sensitive to light as ISO 1600. A low ISO value (e.g. 100 or 200) means low sensitivity to light. This is exactly what's needed in bright conditions in order to avoid overly-exposed photos. A high ISO value (e.g. 800, 1600 or higher) means a high sensitivity to light.
Is higher ISO brighter?
When it comes to measuring the ISO, the lower the ISO, the darker your image will be; the higher the ISO, the brighter your image will be.
Why are my low light photos grainy?
That is “noise”, and in photography, that comes across as the “grainy” quality in some low-light photos. In auto mode, your camera will need to kick the ISO up higher to gather enough light to create an image. That amplification doesn't come without a cost—thus, the grain in your photos.
Why is high ISO bad?
The faster shutter speed with a higher ISO value can minimize or remove motion blur, but if the ISO is too high there will be more noise in the image. It can also be overexposed if the ISO is too high when the location has abundant light. For landscape images, use a tripod and shoot at low ISO for most images.
Can high ISO damage camera?
The camera manufacturer has determined a range for the ISO values. So, you cannot go above the highest possible ISO settings in the camera. Thus, your camera will be completely safe at the highest possible ISO settings. It will not cause any kind of damage to the camera.
What ISO is best for outdoor photography?
The ISO setting determines how sensitive your camera's sensors are to light. The key to a great outdoor portrait is considering how bright it is outside. In full daylight, use a lower ISO setting, between 100 and 400, while later in the day or at night you'll have to pick a much higher setting.
What happens if the ISO is too low?
When the ISO setting is low, the sensor is less responsive to light, so, therefore, it requires more light to create a well-exposed photograph. Using a low ISO setting will result in better technical quality photos generally.

What is the 400 rule?
A common rule of thumb to figure out your maximum shutter speed for sharp stars at night is to divide 500 by your focal length. Sometimes it's called the 600 Rule or the 400 Rule or several other numbers that can be used depending on your sensor size.
Why do my photos look hazy?
The most common reason for a blurry photo is an incorrect use of shutter speed. The faster your shutter speed is, the less chance there is for camera shake. This is particularly true when shooting handheld. There is no way that anyone will be able to handhold a camera steady enough at slow shutter speeds.
Why are my professional photos grainy?
Why do my photos look grainy? The graininess you're referring to, is called noise, and it's caused by having your ISO set too high. While it seems nice that your camera offers you a high ISO, it doesn't mean it can really be used at the highest setting and produce a quality image.
Why are my pictures so noisy?
Noise lurks in the shadows, so when you raise the exposure in processing, you actually make the noise more visible throughout your image. That means a photo taken with a lower ISO and underexposed will have MORE grain than an image taken with a higher ISO, but correctly (or even over) exposed.

Most cameras these days have a native ISO range of between 100 to 6400. Some even go higher, while others go lower.
