What causes the lagging strand to lag?

This delay occurs because DNA polymerization on the lagging strand is forced to occur in the direction going away from the replication fork. The fork thus must open up one Okazaki fragment's length of DNA template before replication is initiation on that strand.

Why is the lagging strand slower than the leading strand?

DNA replication is slower on the lagging strand than on the leading strand because upon initiation the leading strand has an RNA primer added so the synthesis of the new DNA can be continuous in the direction of the replication fork and only needs to be ligated when it encounters another replication fork.

Why are there lagging strands in DNA replication?

Explanation: The lagging strand exists because DNA is antiparallel and replication always occurs in the 5' to 3' direction.

Why are Okazaki fragments made on the lagging strand?

Okazaki fragments are formed on the lagging strand for the synthesis of DNA in a 5′ to 3′ direction towards the replication fork. Only one of the two strands of DNA would be replicated in an entity if not for these fragments. This would reduce the efficiency of the process of replication.

Leading strand vs. lagging strand

Why is one strand called the lagging strand quizlet?

One strand is synthesized continuously, in the same direction that helicase opens the double helix, and is known as the leading strand. The other strand is synthesized discontinuously, in the direction opposite that of helicase movement, and is known as the lagging strand.

What determines the leading and lagging strand?

The main difference between leading and lagging strand is that the leading strand is the DNA strand, which grows continuously during DNA replication whereas lagging strand is the DNA strand, which grows discontinuously by forming short segments known as Okazaki fragments.

Why does DNA synthesis occur differently on the leading and lagging strand?

Due to the antiparallel orientation of the two chromosomal DNA strands, one strand (leading strand) is replicated in a mostly processive manner, while the other (lagging strand) is synthesized in short sections called Okazaki fragments.

How is the lagging strand different from the leading strand during DNA replication quizlet?

What is the difference between the leading strand and the lagging strand in DNA replication? The leading strand is synthesized in the 3' → 5' direction in a discontinuous fashion, while the lagging strand is synthesized in the 5' → 3' direction in a continuous fashion.

Why is the 3/5 strand called the lagging strand quizlet?

One of the strands is oriented in the 3' to 5' direction (towards the replication fork), this is the leading strand. The other strand is oriented in the 5' to 3' direction (away from the replication fork), this is the lagging strand.

Why is the lagging strand discontinuous quizlet?

On the lagging strand, since DNA moves from the 3' to 5' end, the synthesis is discontinuous because DNA polymerase III can only move from the 5' to the 3' and multiple primers are needed to synthesize the other strand from the origin of replication to the replication fork.

How come Okazaki fragments are short and the leading strand is long quizlet?

Okazaki fragments are short sequences synthesized in the lagging strand because DNA polymerase can synthesize only from 5' to 3' and the DNA strands are antiparallel.

Why are Okazaki fragments formed on lagging strand only Class 12?

Answer. Answer: Okazaki fragments are formed on the lagging strand so that DNA can be synthesized in the essential 5' to 3' manner on the lagging strand.

What is the difference between the lagging strand and the Okazaki fragments?

Okazaki fragments are relatively short strands. They are the end products or the newly synthesized DNA fragments that are formed on the lagging strand. A lagging strand is defined as the DNA strand that is replicated discontinuously from the five-foot to three-foot direction.

Why is DNA replication not continuous on both strands?

Discontinuous DNA Replication Versus Continuous Replication

DNA synthesis can only take place when the two strands of the double helix are separated. During DNA replication, an enzyme breaks open the helix and DNA polymerase copies each strand.

Why does the lagging strand produce fragments instead of being synthesized continuously?

As you have learned, the DNA polymerase enzyme can add nucleotides in only one direction. In the leading strand, synthesis continues until the end of the chromosome is reached; however, on the lagging strand there is no place for a primer to be made for the DNA fragment to be copied at the end of the chromosome.
