Why BMW uses electric water pump?
John Johnson What year did BMW start using electric water pumps?
BMW Water Pump
Nearly all BMWs from 2006-2018 use an electric pump. Previous to 2006 and many post-2018 are belt-driven pumps. More on this in a minute.
How long does a BMW electric water pump last?
Water pumps are designed to last at least 100,000 miles, however, if your water pump fails, you should replace it with a high-quality original-equipment level unit. Less expensive replacement pumps are available, but they might only have a service life of 30,000 miles.
What is the benefit of an electric water pump?
Main benefits:
An electric water pump is far more in tune with your engine's specific cooling needs. By utilizing a controller, it can determine how much coolant circulates through the engine at given temperature ranges and maintain a target temperature. This prevents inadequate or excessive cooling.
Does BMW still use plastic water pumps?
Today the radiator has an aluminum center, with the side tanks made of plastic. The water pumps are partially plastic in many BMWs, as are the ends of the coolant hoses, the thermostat housing and the coolant tank.

Who makes BMW water pumps?
About Hepu
For more than 50 years, HEPU has been known as a well-known manufacturer of high quality water pumps for motor vehicles.
Do modern cars use electric water pumps?
While not in widespread use, electric water pumps are showing up in many modern vehicles, including various Toyota and Lexus Hybrid models, some Audi, Bentley, and Volkswagen models, and several cars from BMW. These pumps receive energy from the vehicle's electrical system rather than an engine-driven pulley system.
Is an electric water pump better?
An electric water pump is more efficient and more in tune with your engine's specific cooling needs.
Is electric water pump better than mechanical?
Although numbers vary, electric pumps will typically flow two to three times as much as a mechanical pump at idle RPM (because electric delivers a constant flow rate, while mechanical is scaling with engine speed), but once the engine rpm exceeds 3,000, the pendulum swings in favor of mechanical, and above 6,500, as ...
How much does a BMW water pump cost?
The Best in Auto Repair
The average cost for a BMW 328i water pump replacement is between $816 and $1,046. Labor costs are estimated between $267 and $337 while parts are priced between $549 and $710.
What causes electric water pump failure?
The most common cause of water pump failure is simply from age and wear of its electric motor. Over time, most parts in a car or truck, auxiliary pumps included, start to break down due to constant wear and tear.
Are BMW turbos water cooled?
Modern turbos now use water cooling, along with oil cooling to keep the bearings and turbine cool. When you turn the engine off, the water continues to flow throughout to cool off the bearings which in turn keeps the oil from scorching and sticking, since it is no longer flowing.
What makes a BMW overheat?
BMW engine overheating issues are a common complaint among many BMW owners. Some of the main causes of overheating in BMWs include coolant leaks, a clogged coolant system, water pump failure, and using the wrong type of coolant.
How do I know if my BMW electric water pump is bad?
Signs of a Failing BMW Water Pump
- An apparent coolant leak near the front of your vehicle.
- Whining noises coming from under the hood, which can indicate a broken water pump pulley.
- Overheating engine.
- Steam coming from the radiator.
- Check engine light has turned on.
- Engine temperature warning light has turned on.
How long will an electric water pump last?
On average these water pump systems can last between around 8-15 years, so although it may be costly to repair or replace you can have the peace of mind that it will pay for itself over the years.
Why do some cars have two water pumps?
Most of these are hybrid or electric vehicles that use one or more supplemental electric pumps to cool the power inverter electronics, battery pack and/or to keep hot coolant circulating to the heater when the idle stop/start system turns off the engine.
Are electric cars water cooled?
Air cooling is used in earlier versions of electric cars, such as the Nissan Leaf. As electric cars are now being used more commonly, safety issues have arisen with purely air-cooled battery packs, particularly in hot climates. Other car manufacturers, such as Tesla, insist that liquid cooling is the safest method.
How important is a water pump in a car?
A water pump is vital to a car engine's operation because it ensures the coolant keeps moving through the engine block, cylinder head, hoses and radiator, and maintains an optimum operating temperature. It is usually driven by a belt from the crankshaft pulley or sprocket.
Do electric car motors need cooling?
Electric cars produce heat and still need a cooling system. That's where the water pump comes in. EVs can be air-cooled, but most are not. Liquid cooling is much more efficient because it's consistent, and this allows the cooled components to run closer to maximum output.
Why do BMW engines fail?
The most common causes of detonation include excessive cylinder pressure or inadequate fuel octane or incorrect ignition timing. It may also be caused by a failed EGR valve, dirty spark plugs or excessive engine heat.
