Why are my hands blue GREY?
Daniel Davis What causes hands to turn GREY?
Peripheral cyanosis is a condition in which the extremities develop a distinctive bluish discoloration because they are not receiving enough oxygen-rich blood. This condition most often shows up in the hands, feet, fingers, and/or toes. Reduced blood circulation to the affected extremities is almost always to blame.
Is cyanosis an emergency?
Peripheral cyanosis is the bluish discoloration of the distal extremities (Hands, fingertips, toes), and can sometimes involve circumoral and periorbital areas. Mucous membranes are generally not involved. Peripheral cyanosis is rarely a life-threatening medical emergency.
When should I be worried about blue hands?
If you notice your feet or hands turning blue or if they become cold to the touch, it may mean the artery is completely blocked. This is a medical emergency and you should go to the ER.
Why are my hands blue but not cold?
Most commonly, blue hands are caused by a lack of oxygen in the blood. This may happen when you are at high altitude or if you are choking, or may be due to chronic underlying conditions such as lung diseases or chronic heart disease.

Can low blood pressure cause blue hands?
This causes the fingertips and toes become numb, as well as bluish or whitish, in cold temperatures. The blood vessels narrow, preventing blood from reaching the extremities. Low blood pressure. Low blood pressure can keep enough blood and oxygen from reaching the hands and feet.
What is the most common cause of cyanosis?
Cyanosis is a bluish color in the skin, lips, and nail beds caused by a shortage of oxygen in the blood. Cyanosis occurs because blood with low levels of oxygen turns blue or purple. This low-oxygen blood causes a blue-purple tint to the skin.
How do you get rid of blue hands?
Sometimes cold temperatures can cause narrowing of the blood vessels and lead to blue-tinged skin. Warming or massaging the blue areas should return normal blood flow and color to the skin. If warming up your hands and feet doesn't restore normal blood flow and color, you may have an underlying condition.
What drugs cause cyanosis?
Past history: cyanosis can result from any lung disease of sufficient severity. Drug history: certain drugs may cause methaemoglobinaemia (eg, nitrates, dapsone) or sulfhaemoglobinaemia (eg, metoclopramide).
What disease turns your skin GREY?
Argyria is a rare condition that causes the skin to turn blue or gray. This discoloration happens when the body comes into contact with excessive amounts of silver. People come into contact with very small amounts of silver on a daily basis. It is present in food, drinking water, and even in the air that we breathe.
What can cause your skin to look gray?
A gray tint to the skin is also an indicator of restricted blood and oxygen flow. Causes of a gray or pallor pigmentation to the skin can be caused by kidney disease or malfunction, cancers that cause blood loss, congestive heart failure, or excess iron.
Can anxiety cause blue hands?
Why does it happen? Raynaud's is usually triggered by cold temperatures, anxiety or stress. The condition occurs because your blood vessels go into a temporary spasm, which blocks the flow of blood. This causes the affected area to change colour to white, then blue and then red, as the bloodflow returns.

What are three disorders that can cause cyanosis?
Common Causes of Central Cyanosis
- Pulmonary.
- Impaired gas exchange secondary to pneumonia.
- Embolism and ventilation perfusion mismatch.
- Impaired gas diffusion via the alveoli.
- High altitude.
- Anatomic shunts.
- Right to left shunt in congenital heart disease.
- Arteriovenous malformation.
What are three principal reasons of cyanosis?
All the common causes of Central Cyanosis. Reduced cardiac output (e.g. heart failure or hypovolaemia) Cold exposure. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
What does GREY skin mean?
Pallor, or pale skin, and grayish or blue skin are a result of a lack of oxygenated blood. Your blood carries oxygen around your body, and when this is disrupted, you see a discoloration. The disruption may be to the flow of blood itself, which produces paleness or a gray tint to skin tone.
What causes poor circulation hands?
Poor circulation occurs when something disrupts this process, preventing sufficient blood supply to some body parts. Conditions that may lead to poor circulation in the hands include atherosclerosis, anemia, and Raynaud's disease. Smoking may also increase the likelihood of poor circulation.
What causes blue tinted skin?
A bluish color to the skin or mucous membrane is usually due to a lack of oxygen in the blood. The medical term is cyanosis.
Can low iron cause cyanosis?
Cause of cyanosis
Cyanosis is caused by an increase in the deoxygenated haemoglobin level to above 5 g/dL. In fact patients who have anemia do not develop cyanosis until the oxygen saturation (also called SaO2) falls below normal haemoglobin levels.
What does cyanosis look like?
Cyanosis is characterized by bluish discoloration of skin and mucous membranes. Cyanosis is usually a sign of an underlying condition rather than being a disease in itself. The most common symptoms of the condition are bluish discoloration of the lips, fingers, and toes.
Does COPD cause cyanosis?
Some people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD) have a symptom that is called “cyanosis.” If a person has cyanosis, it means that there is not enough oxygen in his or her blood for the body to function well.
How can I improve the circulation in my hands?
Exercise is the simplest way to improve your blood's ability to circulate through your hands. Your body's muscles require oxygenated blood in order to function, and as you work the muscles in your hands, the surrounding blood vessels will dilate to allow more of this oxygenated blood to flow through.
When does cyanosis occur?
Cyanosis is a bluish discoloration of the skin, mucous membranes, tongue, lips, or nail beds and is due to an increased concentration of reduced hemoglobin (Hb) in the circulation. Clinically evident cyanosis typically occurs at an oxygen saturation of 85% or less.
How do you test for Raynaud's?
To tell the difference between primary and secondary Raynaud's, your doctor might do a test called nailfold capillaroscopy. During the test, the doctor looks at the skin at the base of your fingernail under a microscope or magnifier to look for deformities or swelling of the tiny blood vessels.
How do I get more oxygen in my blood?
Breathing in fresh air: Opening your windows or going outside for a walk can increase the amount of oxygen that your body brings in, which increases your overall blood oxygen level. Quitting smoking: Only two to three weeks after you quit smoking, your circulation will likely improve significantly.
