Which organisms have the highest concentration of DDT?

The highest amount of DDT and derivatives residues were found in carnivore fish species, C. striatus which is the top predator of food web.

Which organism is most affected by DDT Why?

DDT is highly toxic to aquatic animals (14). DDT affects various systems in aquatic animals including the heart and brain (14). DDT is highly toxic to fish (14). Fish have a poor ability to detect DDT in water (14).

Why is DDT higher in animals higher up in the food chain?

The concentration effect occurs because DDT is metabolized and excreted much more slowly than the nutrients that are passed from one trophic level to the next. So DDT accumulates in the bodies (especially in fat).

Which organisms were affected most by biological magnification of DDT?

Biological magnification caused a crisis with eagles, where DDT was used to control mosquitoes and other pests. Birds would accumulate toxic levels of DDT in their bodies which would cause their eggs to become fragile and break. The eagle almost became extinct, but lawmakers banned DDT and the eagle is now in recovery.

Which of the following groups is most susceptible to problems from DDT?

Plants/animals from which of the following groups are most susceptible to problems from DDT? primary producer, primary consumer, secondary consumer or tertiary consumer. Why? Tertiary consumers are more susceptible to problems from DDE because of biomagnification.

Which organisms is more affected by biological magnification problem arising due to entry of DDT in pond ecosystem?

So, the correct option is 'Snake'.

Which animals are exposed to the highest levels of chemical contaminants those at the top or at the bottom of the food chain Why?

This is biomagnification, and it means that higher-level predators-fish, birds, and marine mammals-build up greater and more dangerous amounts of toxic materials than animals lower on the food chain.

Which organism in the food web would contain the highest concentration of chemical pollutants?

The higher an animal is on the food chain (e.g. tertiary consumer such as seals), the greater the concentration of DDT in their body as a result of a process called biomagnification. In this activity you will identify the way in which DDT might move through a food chain.

What concentration of DDT did the birds have in their bodies?

The birds' brains contained concentrations of DDE, a breakdown product of DDT, ranging from 155 to 1,043 parts per million, with an average of 552.

What species did DDT affect?

Background. The fact that DDT (or dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethane) played a role in the decline of bald eagle and other bird-of-prey populations (e.g., ospreys, brown pelicans) is now commonly appreciated among most biologists.

Where can DDT be found?

People are most likely to be exposed to DDT from foods, including meat, fish, and dairy products. DDT can be absorbed by eating, breathing, or touching products contaminated with DDT.

What does DDT cause in animal populations?

DDT has been suggested to be toxic to a range of wildlife including birds and marine animals, and its metabolite DDE (dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene) causes eggshell thinning of certain bird species such as bald eagle and brown pelican, leading to declines of their populations (1,2).

How many times higher is the concentration of DDT in the plankton than in the water?

(Concentrations of DDT 10 times greater than those in the plankton have been measured in clams.) The process of concentration goes right on up the food chain from one trophic level to the next.

What is DDT in food chain?

Dichlorodiphenytrichloroethane (DDT) is an organochlorine insecticide with a broad spectrum of activities such as the control of pest in forest and on agricultural crops, household pests, vector-borne diseases like malaria, typhus, etc.

What is impact of DDT on fish eating birds?

High concentrations of DDT disturb calcium metabolism in birds, which causes thinning of eggshell and their premature breaking, eventually causing a decline in bird populations.

Which organism in the food web would contain the lowest concentration of chemical pollutants *?

Explanation: The concentration of a pollutant in a food chain always starts with the lowest concentration in the first level, whether plant or animal. Each successive food chain level concentrates the pollutant more in the level species.

Which organism in this food chain will have the highest concentration of non biodegradable chemicals?

Hawk will have the highest concentration of non-biodegradable chemicals. The phenomenon associated is biomagnification.

How does DDT enter food chains?

DDT enters the food chain after it gets spread, either from getting on insects, plants, or water runoff. In the water, it can spread readily to other...

Which animals have the highest risk of exposure to pesticides?

Risk to Wildlife

Animals like hawks, owls, squirrels, skunks, deer, coyotes, foxes, mountain lions, and bobcats can be killed by pesticides even though they are not the target.

What part of the food chain is most affected by toxins?

Bioaccumulation occurs when toxins build up - or accumulate - in a food chain. The animals at the top of the food chain are affected most severely. This is what happens: Small amounts of toxic substances - often pesticides or pollution from human activity - are absorbed by plants.

What types of organisms can be affected by toxins?

The severity and type of diseases caused by toxins can range from minor effects to deadly effects. The organisms which are capable of producing toxins include bacteria, fungi, algae, and plants. Some of the major types of toxins include, but are not limited to, environmental, marine, and microbial toxins.

Which of the following possess the highest biological magnification grasshopper frog snake peacock?

The highest biological magnification is possessed by the Peacock. The amount of DDT present is higher in the higher organisms. The Grasshopper contains DDT comparatively less, when it is eaten by a Frog it multiplies and becomes more in quantity.

Which of the following toxic substance undergoes biological magnification in food chains?

Biomagnification refers to increase in concentration of toxicant at successive trophic levels. This happens because a toxic substance accumulated by an organism cannot be metabolised or excreted, and is thus passed on to the next higher trophic level. This phenomenon is well-known for mercury and DDT.

What is DDT in biomagnification?

DDT is a Class II insecticide, meaning it is moderately toxic. Studies have proved that DDT has serious implications on human and animal health. Low-to-moderate exposure (10mg/kg) may result in nausea, diarrhoea and irritation of eyes, nose or throat, while higher doses (16mg/kg) can lead to tremors and convulsions.
