Which type of organism contains the highest concentration of the harmful chemical?

The organism which occurs at the highest trophic level (on the extreme right side) in the food chain will have the maximum concentration of harmful chemicals in its body. In this case, grass is eaten by grasshopper, grasshopper is eaten by frog, frog is eaten by snake by snake and finally snake is eaten by peacock.

Which organism in the food web would contain the lowest concentration of chemical pollutants *?

Explanation: The concentration of a pollutant in a food chain always starts with the lowest concentration in the first level, whether plant or animal. Each successive food chain level concentrates the pollutant more in the level species.

Where is the most concentrated pollution in a food chain?

Organisms at the top have a higher tissue concentration of toxins and pollutants than lower levels. The concentration system is due to persistence of the toxins, food chain energetics, and low rate of internal degradation or excretion of the substance. Trophic level I represents the primary producers.

Which trophic level in the food web would contain the highest concentration?

The first trophic level contains the greatest number of organisms and is comprised mainly of plants. The organisms in this layer are called primary producers because they get their energy from an abiotic source. Most primary producers get their energy directly from the sun.

Which organism in this food chain will have the highest concentration of non biodegradable chemicals?

Hawk will have the highest concentration of non-biodegradable chemicals. The phenomenon associated is biomagnification.

Which trophic level in the given pyramid has lowest and highest concentration of chemical pollutants?

Answer. the last trophic level of a food chain has the highest concentration of toxic substances.

Which type of organism ends up with the greatest concentration of pollutants?

Predatory fish - fish that eat other fish that have eaten still other fish and animals - will have some of the highest concentrations of biomagnified chemicals. Many popular fish are also rich in fat and fish oils, which is where many toxins are stored.

What part of the food chain is most affected by toxins?

Bioaccumulation occurs when toxins build up - or accumulate - in a food chain. The animals at the top of the food chain are affected most severely. This is what happens: Small amounts of toxic substances - often pesticides or pollution from human activity - are absorbed by plants.

What organisms are most affected by biomagnification?

Animals are most affected by biomagnification higher up the food chain after much accumulation. Biomagnification could affect me because I eat meat and plants, which could already have mercury in them polluting me as well.

Why does the concentration of toxic substances increase from a lower to a higher trophic level?

As the trophic level increases in a food chain, the amount of toxic build up increases. The x's represent the amount of toxic build up accumulating as the trophic level increases. Toxins build up in organism's fat and tissue. Predators accumulate higher toxins than prey.

Which organism will have accumulation of highest pesticides in the given food chain?

Detailed Solution. The correct answer is Hawk. Biomagnification refers to the tendency of pollutants to concentrate as they move from one trophic level to another.

Who carry in their system the maximum concentration of DDT?

According to the concept of biomagnification, the accumulation of a non biodegradable pollutant increases at every trophic level and is maximum at the highest trophic level. Since, man occupies the apex of the ecological pyramid, DDT contamination is found maximum in man.

At which level is the concentration of chemicals highest in a food chain and why?

An animal higher up on the food chain tends to have a greater concentration of chemicals because of what it eats. Even though there might be very little concentration of chemicals in the tissues of an organism at the bottom level of the food chain, the concentration of chemicals builds up as you go up the food chain.

Why are some pollutants more harmful to organisms at higher trophic levels?

The water cycle renews Earth's fresh water, but some places have a limited supply. Why are some pollutants more harmful to organisms at higher trophic levels? Pollutants are more concentrated in the bodies of organisms higher on a food chain. Agricultural chemicals are one source of water pollution.

How is food chain affected by toxic chemicals?

They get absorbed by organisms at the bottom of the food chains and build up at higher levels. This process is known as bioaccumulation. If the lethal dose is reached, the organisms at the top of the food chain die.

What types of organisms can be affected by toxins?

The severity and type of diseases caused by toxins can range from minor effects to deadly effects. The organisms which are capable of producing toxins include bacteria, fungi, algae, and plants. Some of the major types of toxins include, but are not limited to, environmental, marine, and microbial toxins.

How do toxic pollutants spread through the food web?

How Does Pollution Affect the Food Web? Pollution from the environment (soil, sediments, water, and air) gets into the food web by polluting plants or animals that come in contact with environmental pollution. For example, water pollution may accumulate and concentrate in fish.

In which trophic level biomagnification is highest?

So the correct answer is 'secondary consumers'.

Which of the following is an example of pollutants whose concentration increases in each trophic level?

An example is DDT whose concentration increases at each trophic level.

Which of the following organisms would be expected to have the highest concentration of mercury pollution in its tissues?

We expected to see higher mercury levels in tissues of female fishes because they are larger and can eat larger food items.

What are quaternary consumers in a food web?

Quaternary Consumer

The organisms that prey on and eat tertiary consumers are called quaternary consumers. These are on the fifth trophic level in a food chain. These organisms are often the top predators, or apex predators, in the ecosystem. These organisms do not have any natural enemies in the ecosystem.

What is at the top level of the energy pyramid?

The top layer of the energy pyramid contains apex predators. These are mostly carnivorous animals that have no natural predators. The pyramid shape is used to represent the flow of energy because of the way that energy is used up and lost throughout the system. The primary producers take in energy from the sun.

Which of the following will have maximum concentration?

Answer: Peacock, Frog, Snake, Grasshopper. In this food chain, since peacock occurs at the highest trophic level (on the extreme right side), therefore, peacock will have the maximum concentration of harmful chemicals in its body.

Why Hawk will have the highest concentration of non-biodegradable chemicals?

Answer: Among the above mentioned organisms hawk will have the highest concentration of non biodegradable chemicals. The phenomenon is biomagnification. Explanation: Biomagnification means the increase of contaminated substances or toxic chemicals that take place in the food chains.
