Which of the following trophic level has highest concentration of DDT?
Olivia House Which organism contains the most DDT?
Worms, grasses, algae, and fish accumulate DDT. Apex predators, such as eagles, had high amounts of DDT in their bodies, accumulated from the fish and small mammals they prey on.
Why is DDT concentration in trophic levels?
This is because the consumers at the successive trophic level consume more than the previous level to fulfill the energy requirements. Due to this, DDT keeps on accumulating in the successive trophic levels in higher concentrations. This process is called biomagnification. Hence, The correct answer is option (A).
What is the concentration of DDT for first trophic level?
Hence, the correct answer is '25 ppm'
Why is DDT higher in animals higher up in the food chain?
The concentration effect occurs because DDT is metabolized and excreted much more slowly than the nutrients that are passed from one trophic level to the next. So DDT accumulates in the bodies (especially in fat).
Increasing concentration of DDT in organisms of a food chain in higher trophic levels is known as
What is DDT in food chain?
Dichlorodiphenytrichloroethane (DDT) is an organochlorine insecticide with a broad spectrum of activities such as the control of pest in forest and on agricultural crops, household pests, vector-borne diseases like malaria, typhus, etc.
What is the relationship between the trophic level and the amount of DDT found in the body of these organisms?
The higher the trophic level of an organism, the higher the concentration of DDT. DDT is excreted from the body very slowly and it is stored in fat. Thus, when an organism consumes another organism, the DDT in the prey accumulates in the predator.
Is the following in the correct sequence of increasing order of DDT concentration?
Hence, the correct answer is 'Water-0.003ppm, zooplankton- 0.04ppm, small fish-0.5ppm, large fish-2ppm, fish eating birds-25ppm'
What is the impact of DDT on birds and other higher trophic level organisms?
Rather, DDT and its relatives alter the bird's calcium metabolism in a way that results in thin eggshells. Instead of eggs, heavily DDT-infested Brown Pelicans and Bald Eagles tend to find omelets in their nests, since the eggshells are unable to support the weight of the incubating bird.
What happens to the concentration of DDT in each trophic level 1 point?
Solution : DDT concentration continuously increases in successive trophic levels in a food chain.
Where is the pesticide concentration the highest?
Pesticide residues were found more frequently in topsoil. Overall, the concentration of pesticides ranged from 1.0 μg kg−1 to 251 μg kg−1, with a mean of 16 μg kg−1.
What happens to the concentration of DDT in each trophic level 1 point A decreases B increases C remains unchanged D becomes zero?
Hence, the correct answer is 'Increases'.
Which trophic level is most affected by biomagnification?
In many cases, animals near the top of the food chain are most affected because of a process called biomagnification. Many of the most dangerous toxins settle to the seafloor and then are taken in by organisms that live or feed on bottom sediments.
Which of the following groups is most susceptible to problems from DDT?
Plants/animals from which of the following groups are most susceptible to problems from DDT? primary producer, primary consumer, secondary consumer or tertiary consumer. Why? Tertiary consumers are more susceptible to problems from DDE because of biomagnification.
Which aquatic species is most likely to accumulate the highest concentration of DDT?
DDT tends to run off land into water ecosystems. Thus water ecosystems tend to be more contaminated then land ecosystems. Fish easily take up DDT and store DDE in their bodies. Ospreys eat these fish and are exposed to high levels of DDE.
What is biological magnification if the concentration of DDT?
Due to this, DDT keeps on accumulating in the successive trophic levels in higher concentrations. This process is called the biomagnification. 0.003 ppb in water, 0.04 ppm in zooplankton, 0.5 ppm in small fish, 2 ppm in large fish, 25 ppm in large fish eating bird. Hence, the correct answer is '25 ppm'
What small fish eat zooplankton?
Small Predators
Mollusks, small crustaceans (such as shrimp and krill) and small fish like sardines and herring eat large amounts of the zooplankton.
How do you calculate biomagnification?
In general, the biomagnification of contaminants is basically quantified as the biomagnification factor in terms of the concentration of a given chemical in the consumer or predator relative to the concentration in the diet or prey (i.e. BMF= CB/CD, where CB is the chemical concentration in the organism and CD is the ...
How does DDT enter food chain?
Answer and Explanation: DDT enters the food chain after it gets spread, either from getting on insects, plants, or water runoff.
Which one shows the least magnification of DDT in aquatic food chain?
Phytoplanktons are the producers in the food chain having the least amount of toxicant DDT, as we move to the successive trophic levels the amount of DDT increases. It becomes maximum in the fish-eating birds (DDT 25 ppm).
Which trophic level would have the highest DDT levels quizlet?
The DDT concentration increases exponentially with every trophic level. As the tertiary consumers, osprey are at the highest trophic level in this community and they have the highest DDT concentrations in their tissues.
How many times higher is the concentration of DDT in the plankton than in the water?
(Concentrations of DDT 10 times greater than those in the plankton have been measured in clams.) The process of concentration goes right on up the food chain from one trophic level to the next.
What do you notice about the concentration of DDT as you go up the energy pyramid?
Explanation: DDT increases or biomagnifies if we look at a food chain. DDT is fat-soluble, meaning animals store it in fatty tissues. It also takes a relatively long amount of time to break down.
What happens to the concentration of DDT as it passes into food chain?
DDT gets passed from one trophic level to the next trophic level. DDT level increases as the food chain progresses. It means the primary consumers will be seen and so on. The top carnivore will sustain the highest concentration of DDT.
