What is the advantage of PERT over CPM?

PERT is event oriented whereas CPM is activity oriented. In simple words, in PERT network interest is focused upon start or completion of events and not on activities themselves. 2. In CPM network no allowance is made for uncertainties in the duration of time involved whereas in PERT network uncertainty is considered.

How is PERT different from CPM?

PERT is that technique of project management which is used to manage uncertain (i.e., time is not known) activities of any project. CPM is that technique of project management which is used to manage only certain (i.e., time is known) activities of any project.

What is the biggest difference between a PERT chart and a CPM chart?

The number of time estimates is the biggest difference between the CPM and PERT diagrams. The PERT has an optimistic time, a pessimistic time, and a most likely time. In addition, the PERT diagram has the time estimates on the arrow vice the node as in the CPM diagram.

Why do we use PERT and CPM?

The techniques of PERT and CPM help greatly in completing the various jobs on schedule. They minimise production delays, interruptions and conflicts. These techniques are very helpful in coordinating various jobs of the total project and thereby expedite and achieve completion of project on time.

PERT or CPM - what's the difference?

What are the advantages of CPM?

There are several benefits associated with the CPM.

• Enhanced scheduling. ...
• Improved project management. ...
• More efficient distribution of human resources. ...
• Cost/budget control. ...
• Poor adaptation to change. ...
• Inability to determine the exact duration of tasks. ...
• A lot of time and effort required. ...
• Constant resource planning required.

Which is not the advantage of CPM?

Disadvantages of Critical Path Method (CPM):

The scheduling of personnel is not handled by the CPM. In CPM, it is difficult to estimate the completion time of an activity. The critical path is not always clear in CPM. For bigger projects, CPM networks can be complicated too.

Where is CPM generally used?

CPM technique is used in construction projects based on the knowledge and experience of the past projects for predicting accurately the time required for various activities during the execution of the project. Time required for each activity is known and defined for the project.

Which of the following is an advantage of PERT and CPM Mcq?

PERT and CPM are useful in monitoring costs. Time estimates are subject to fudging by managers. Managers only need to closely monitor the critical path. PERT and CPM are useful when controlling large projects.

What are the advantages of PERT?

Advantages of PERT Charts

• Improving Inter-Departmental Coordination. PERT analysis improves planning and decision-making by integrating the presentation of data across various departments. ...
• All Initiated Projects Assumed New Project. ...
• Methods for Managing Uncertainty.

What are disadvantages of PERT and CPM?

Another of the limitations of PERT and CPM is that the larger the project, the more complicated the diagram. Above a certain level of complexity, all the lines you map out start to look incomprehensible rather than enlightening.

Can CPM be used in place of PERT for managing a project?

Program or Project Management and Review Technique (PERT) is apt for those projects where the time required to accomplish different activities is not known. CPM or Critical Path Method is appropriate for the projects which are reappearing (recurring) in nature.

What is the main disadvantage of employing CPM or PERT in project management?

Disadvantages of CPM –

In CPM, it is difficult to estimate the completion time of activity. The critical path is not always clear in CPM. For bigger projects, CPM networks can be complicated too. It also does not handle the scheduling of resource allocation.

What are the pros and cons of PERT?

The main advantage of PERT charts is that they offer a clean, minimalist overview of a project. This makes it easier to identify important success factors such as the critical path, key tasks and potential bottlenecks. The main disadvantage of PERT charts is that they can be very labour-intensive to create.

What is the main difference between PERT and CPM Mcq?

PERT deals with unpredictable activities, but CPM deals with predictable activities. PERT is used where the nature of the job is non-repetitive. In contrast to, CPM involves the job of repetitive nature.

What technique of network analysis is mainly useful for?

Explanation: PERT or Project Evaluation and Review Technique can be understood as a tool for handling research and development projects which involve a series of activities.

What is true about CPM and PERT?

A PERT network is activity-oriented while a CPM network is event-oriented. Explanation: A CPM network is activity-oriented while a PERT network is event-oriented. Event is the completion of an activity or the commencement of an activity. An event may be head event, tail event or dual role event.

Why CPM is suitable for construction projects work?

The critical path method (CPM) is the most commonly used technique for scheduling in construction. It is sometimes referred to as critical path scheduling because it mainly calculates the minimum time needed to complete a construction project alongside the possible start and end times for the different activities.

What is CPM in civil engineering?

The critical path method in construction is a method of project scheduling that breaks down required activities using a diagram to calculate the duration required to complete each activity. The critical path method, or CPM for short, is sometimes referred to as critical path scheduling.

Under what circumstances is CPM a better technique than PERT?

PERT technique is best suited for a high precision time estimate, whereas CPM is appropriate for a reasonable time estimate. PERT deals with unpredictable activities, but CPM deals with predictable activities. PERT is used where the nature of the job is non-repetitive.

How is CPM used in project management?

Critical path method (CPM) is a resource-utilization algorithm for scheduling a set of project activities. The essential technique for using CPM is to construct a model of the project that includes the following: A list of all tasks required to complete the project. The dependencies between the tasks.

Is CPM devised by US Navy?

First developed by the United States Navy in 1958, it is commonly used in conjunction with the critical path method (CPM) that was introduced in 1957.

Why PERT is used in project management?

A PERT chart helps a project manager analyze a project's tasks and estimate the amount of time required to complete each task in the project. Using this information, the project manager can estimate the minimum amount of time required to complete the entire project.

What are the applications of CPM?

Applications of Network Analysis (PERT and CPM)

• Research and Development Project (R and D Projects)
• Equipment Maintenance and hauling.
• Construction Projects (Buildings, bridges, and Dams)
• Setting up new industries.
• Planning and launching of new products.
• Design of plants, machines, and systems.
