1. Look towards the back of the engine, near the firewall. This is where the transmission is located on most cars with rear-wheel drive.
2. On cars with front-wheel drive, the transmission dipstick is usually located near the front of the engine, connected to the transaxle.

Can I just add transmission fluid?

Insert long funnel into automatic transmission fluid dipstick hole. Carefully add automatic transmission fluid in small increments and recheck level each time until fluid level reaches "warm" line. CAUTION: DO NOT OVERFILL OR SPILL AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID ON HOT ENGINE PARTS!

What are the signs of low transmission fluid?

• Burning Smell. ...
• Transmission Leaks. ...
• Slipping Gears. ...
• Slow Gear Engagement. ...
• Vehicle Accelerates Poorly. ...
• Check Engine or Transmission Warning Light Is On.

How do I top up my transmission fluid?

Top up the fluid levels through the dipstick tube, using a small funnel. Add a little at a time and check the level frequently to avoid overfilling. Use a clean funnel and fill slowly. Check the level to avoid overfilling.

What happens if you drive on low transmission fluid?

Sometimes, a malfunctioned transmission might trigger leaks of the transmission fluid. It causes the levels of the fluid to go low, which affects the functionality of the vehicle. Driving through low transmission fluid levels might result in permanent and costly vehicle damages and expensive repairs.

How to Check and Add Transmission Fluid

Why do you check transmission fluid with the car running?

Transmission fluid expands in heat and in order to receive accurate results, it must be under normal operating conditions. If the fluid is checked when the engine is cold, you may get false results indicating the fluid is low. Allow the engine to continue running while you check the level.

Will engine light come on if transmission fluid is low?

Low Transmission Fluid

Your transmission fluid plays an important role in keeping the parts of the system lubricated. If the parts of the transmission are not properly lubricated, extreme friction can occur, which could result in damage. As a result, the check engine light can be triggered.

What does low transmission fluid sound like?

If you're like many drivers, you often forget to check the fluid levels in your vehicle, and if the fluid level in your transmission is too low, you will notice a gurgling noise. This noise is caused by the excess air in your transmission line.

What happens if you overfill transmission fluid?

If you overfill it, the transmission will experience hard shifting and slippage. Another consequence of overfilling your transmission is that it will cause the fluid to lose its lubricating properties. It could also lead to the entire system blowing up and not functioning.

Can you mix old and new transmission fluid?

This fluid starts to lose its standard properties and should be changed to keep the transmission parts and its performance at its peak. Mixing old and news fluids wont give you the ideal viscosity and the reduces the performance of the transmission system.

Do you check your transmission fluid with the car on or off?

Step 1: Leave the engine running and open the hood to your car. The car must be warm when you check transmission fluid. Step 2: If you have an inline engine, look behind your oil dipstick, toward your windshield, to locate the transmission fluid dipstick.

When should I put transmission fluid in my car?

If you drive manual, most manufacturers will recommend changing your transmission fluid every 30,000 to 60,000 miles. If you have automatic, you can typically boost that range up to 60,000 to 100,000 miles. There's no harm in changing your fluid early.

How long can you go with low transmission fluid?

Technically, the vehicle can still be driven with low to no transmission fluid for 10 to 15 miles. However, doing so will lead to transmission system failures and can damage the car permanently.

How much transmission fluid do I add if empty?

If the transmission has been drained, you will need 4-12 quarts of fluid to fill it back up. Follow the vehicle service manual for the recommended type and amount of fluid to use. If the fluid is very low when it is checked, then add more fluid and look closely for any leaks.

Why does my car jerk when changing gears?

Automatic transmissions that shift hard, jerk or shake during a shift change may mean your transmission fluid needs changed or fluid level is low. In manual transmission vehicles, abnormal gear shifts could indicate damaged gear synchros, worn clutches or other, more severe issues.

What does slipping transmission feel like?

A slipping transmission tends to feel like your car is jerking or surging. You might even notice that the engine revs to a high RPM between gear changes. As you are driving, the transmission should be providing constant power to the wheels.

What are signs of transmission problems?

What Are the Transmission Failure Symptoms?

• Burning Smell. ...
• Noises When in Neutral. ...
• Slipping Gears. ...
• Dragging Clutch. ...
• Leaking Fluid. ...
• Check Engine Light. ...
• Grinding or Shaking.

Should you check your transmission fluid hot or cold?

Checking Transmission Fluid Levels

If you're going to be checking the transmission fluid level at home, it's a good idea to warm up the car before you do so. If the car is checked while the engine is cold, it might give an inaccurate reading when you use the dipstick.

Can you drive a car with no transmission fluid?

Generally, your car will not drive at all if you have completely run out of transmission fluid. This is especially true if your car uses an automatic transmission. In an automatic vehicle, the transmission fluid provides a coupling between the engine's output and the gears in your transmission.

Can transmission fluid get low without a leak?

We researched several professional sources to find out the cause. A vehicle will lose transmission fluid only when there's a leak. Because there is no combustion with this fluid, it cannot burn off or evaporate while in an air-tight space. If you are running low on this fluid, it is because of a leak.

Can low transmission fluid cause shaking?

Low automatic transmission fluid can cause shaking. If the shaking is accompanied by the check engine light, it's time to visit a mechanic. Drivers of manual cars might discover their clutch master cylinder is the source of the shaking.

Is transmission fluid and oil the same thing?

The main difference between engine oil and transmission fluid is that while engine oil is primarily a lubricant, transmission fluid is also hydraulic fluid. Although they are very similar liquids, they have different properties and are used for different jobs.

Can you check transmission fluid yourself?

Pull out the dipstick, wipe it clean, replace it slowly, and then pull it back out. Check the fluid level—how high the fluid comes up on the dipstick—against the "full" and "low" or "fill" marks on the dipstick. The color of transmission fluid can tell you a lot about the health of your car's transmission.
