What stops diesel from freezing?
Daniel Davis Do I need to add anti-gel to diesel?
The reason why we have to add an anti-gel additive to diesel is because diesel fuels contain wax. Normally the wax is a liquid in solution in the fuel. The problem with the wax is that this is what causes fuel to gel, and gelled fuel (or crystals) can block engine fuel filters.
Can you put too much anti-gel in diesel?
Too Much of a Good Thing Can Be Bad
If you're losing lubricity, don't over-treat. Adding too much of a lubricity improver can react with other various contaminants already in your fuel to cause a different fuel problem—clogged filters.
What temperature will diesel freeze?
The next stage of compromised diesel fuel in winter is diesel gelling. At this stage, the fuel solidifies so completely that it can no longer flow at all (what we refer to as pour point). It's important to note, however, that diesel gelling only occurs at very cold temperatures, below 10°F (-12°C).
How cold does it have to be for diesel to gel?
Diesel fuel gelling has the potential to occur when temperatures drop below 32 degrees Fahrenheit, although the exact temperature it happens at will vary from fuel batch to fuel batch.
How do you keep diesel fuel from freezing?
Does a block heater keep diesel fuel from gelling?
To avoid a diesel from gelling, you can plug the vehicle in using an engine block heater. If you don't have one already fitted to your truck, these can be fitted at your local dealership.
Can diesel freeze while driving?
The fuel tanks can actually gel while driving. Diesel fuel gelling happens when the paraffin usually present in diesel starts to solidify when the temperature drops. To help prevent this from happening, it is important to always treat your fuel system with a reputable anti-gel additive.
Which diesel anti-gel is best?
Diesel Extreme is the best additive in the game. This one adds seven points to diesel's cetane score (which again improves the fuel's combustion performance), and it cleans and lubricates injectors and other critical fuel system components. Diesel Extreme also helps remove excess water and contaminants from fuel.
How do you put anti-gel in diesel?
Diesel fuel anti-gels are simply added to the fuel (just drop it in the fuel tank). Anti-gels drop the freezing point of diesel fuel so that it is less likely to freeze in cold temperatures.
How do you winterize diesel fuel?
The most common is to add a winter fuel additive. There are additives to address the moisture content by helping to “dry” the fuel, there are additives that lower the gel point of diesel fuel and there are combination additives.
Does Stabil work for diesel?
STA-BIL Diesel Fuel Stabilizer
Diesel Formula prevents sludge and sediment formation, cleans and lubricates fuel injectors to improve performance and helps remove water. It is safe to use in ALL diesel fuels, including Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel and Bio-Diesel blends.
How do I keep my diesel engine warm in the winter?
How to Keep a Diesel Engine Warm in Winter
- Keep the Tank Full. To prevent the fuel from freezing and gelling, keep the fuel tank as full as you can. ...
- Take Care of Frozen Fuel. ...
- Keep the Vehicle in a Warm Place. ...
- Get Heating Tools. ...

- Change the Oil.
Can you put gas line antifreeze diesel?
Downloads. TURBO POWER® Universal Gas Line Antifreeze is designed for use in all types of vehicles and is suitable for fuel injection, carbureted, and diesel engine vehicles. It can be used in cars, trucks, motorcycles and snowmobiles.
Can you put too much diesel additive in?
Registered. YES YOU CAN! In my old truck, I added Diesel Power injector cleaner container meant for a 100 gal fuel tank into a 17 gal. fuel tank (1996 F350 Powerstroke).
Why do truckers leave their trucks running all night?
Truckers, both independent owner-operators and fleet drivers, leave their engines idling for three main reasons: weather conditions, economic pressures, and old habits. In cold weather, a truck's engine and fuel tank need to stay warm.
How long does it take for diesel to gel?
Once the weather is close to 10 to 15 degrees Fahrenheit*, gelling starts to occur and can clog the fuel system (*depending on the source and quality of fuel, gelling can occur as high as 20 degrees Fahrenheit).
What diesel additive should I use for winter?
Adding a CFI is the first step to fully protecting your diesel against cold-weather gelling and filter plugging. As temperatures continue to drop, you'll want to replace your No. 2 diesel with a No. 1, which is free of paraffin wax and therefore offers the best operability during the coldest parts of winter.
Will seafoam keep diesel from gelling?
Sea Foam is an all-in-one diesel fuel treatment. It cleans your fuel system, breaks up the water that leads to algae growth, stabilizes your fuel, prevents gelling in the cold, and adds lubrication. It won't boost your engine's power, but it will make it run smoother and give you better mileage.

What causes diesel to gel?
The Cause of Fuel Gelling
Gelling problems are typically caused by the effects of temperature on paraffin, a component of diesel fuel. Paraffin waxes are combustible, adding power when burned in the engine. However, when temperatures drop, diesel will start to solidify.
What temperature do you plug in a diesel block heater?
A general rule of thumb is to plug in your engine block heater when the weather reaches -15° C or lower, just to be safe. If you drive a diesel vehicle, you may need to plug in the engine block heater before temperatures drop that low.
Why do diesels have block heaters?
Not only is a block heater useful for starting your vehicle, but it also helps reduce wear and tear on the engine, mitigating excess fuel consumption and lowering harmful emissions. It also has the benefit of heating the cabin faster! Here's a look at the two main types of diesel block heaters.
Does HEET work in diesel fuel?
ISO-HEET® Brand (red) is a premium water remover and injector cleaner that can be used all year-round and can be used in all types of gasoline, 2-cycle mix and DIESEL. HEET® (yellow) is designed to prevent and treat freezing gas lines and remove some water.
Does HEET clean fuel injectors?
Bottle treats 20 gallons of fuel. Use with every fill-up in winter, and at least every 5,000 miles in summer to clean injectors. Removes water and condensation in warm, wet weather.
