Malabsorption

• Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.
• Celiac disease.
• Gastric bypass surgery.
• H. pylori.
• Autoimmune gastritis.
• Blood loss.

Can stomach problems cause low iron?

Malabsorption is a common cause of iron deficiency in those with digestive diseases. Low dietary iron intake, increased iron loss through bleeding, genetic conditions, or increased demand for iron by the body are other common causes.

What diseases cause low ferritin?

Causes of low ferritin levels

A lower-than-normal ferritin level can indicate that you have an iron deficiency, which can happen when you don't consume enough iron in your daily diet. Another condition that affects iron levels is anemia, which is when you don't have enough red blood cells for iron to attach to.

What causes chronically low ferritin?

Slow, chronic blood loss within the body — such as from a peptic ulcer, a hiatal hernia, a colon polyp or colorectal cancer — can cause iron deficiency anemia. Gastrointestinal bleeding can result from regular use of some over-the-counter pain relievers, especially aspirin. A lack of iron in your diet.

Can IBS cause low ferritin levels?

A 2014 study found that about half of those with the condition may have a mild iron deficiency, suggesting a link between IBS and anemia. People with IBS may develop anemia if they are unable to absorb enough iron from their food.

Why is my body not absorbing iron?

Your body can't absorb iron.

Conditions like celiac disease, ulcerative colitis, or Crohn's disease can make it harder for your intestines to absorb iron. Surgery such as gastric bypass that removes part of your intestines, and medicines used to lower stomach acid can also affect your body's ability to absorb iron.

Why would I see a gastroenterologist for anemia?

Patients with iron deficiency anemia of unknown etiology are frequently referred to a gastroenterologist because in the majority of cases the condition has a gastrointestinal origin. Proper management improves quality of life, alleviates the symptoms of iron deficiency, and reduces the need for blood transfusions.

What cancers cause low ferritin levels?

In a study published in July 2013 in the Annals of Oncology, iron deficiency was most commonly seen in people with pancreatic cancer (present in 63 percent of participants), followed by colorectal cancer (52 percent) and lung cancer (51 percent).

Is ferritin a tumor marker?

Ferritin: a tumor marker expressed by renal cell carcinoma.

What causes low ferritin without anemia?

Hypoferritinemia caused by decreased iron intake, as part of the general poor diet, or due to low gastrointestinal absorption that happens to postbariatric surgery. It also happens in Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis and celiac disease, hemorrhoids, colon cancer, peptic ulcer, menorrhagia, and hematuria.

What is a critically low ferritin level?

Ferritin: usually low in iron deficiency. Less than 10 is virtually diagnostic of iron deficiency anemia, while levels between 10 and 20 are suggestive.

How serious is low ferritin?

A result of low ferritin is strong evidence of an iron deficiency. The body requires iron to make hemoglobin, which is a protein in red blood cells that transfers oxygen from the lungs around the body. Without enough iron, a person may develop anemia.

What does low ferritin but normal hemoglobin mean?

Iron deficiency without anemia can occur when a person has a normal hemoglobin, but below normal serum ferritin and/or transferrin saturation. Iron deficiency with anemia can occur when a person has low values of both serum ferritin and hemoglobin.

Can gastritis cause iron deficiency anemia?

pylori-associated chronic gastritis is a cause of refractory iron deficiency anemia in the absence of bleeding lesions in 18% of their patients.

Can leaky gut cause low iron?

Finally, leaky gut may contribute to a long list of mineral deficiencies because of the ongoing inflammation and damage to carrier proteins. The most common are iron deficiency, vitamin B12 deficiency, magnesium deficiency which can lead to fatigue, neuropathies or muscle pain.

Can diverticulitis cause iron deficiency anemia?

Diverticulosis, though common in older people, does not cause iron deficiency anemia and doesn't cause a positive FOBT.

When should I worry about ferritin levels?

Many laboratories consider serum ferritin levels greater than 200 ng/mL in women and greater than 300 ng/mL in men to be abnormal.

Is ferritin an inflammatory marker?

Ferritin is a marker of inflammation rather than iron status in overweight and obese individuals. Being an acute phase reactant, a high ferritin level secondary to subclinical inflammation in overweight and obese people may mask an underlying iron deficiency.

What ferritin level requires iron infusion?

The efficacy of intravenous iron was bound to a serum ferritin concentration ≤ 15 ng/mL.

Can tumors cause iron deficiency?

Anemia is a frequent complication in cancer patients, both at diagnosis and during treatment, with a multifactorial etiology in most cases. Iron deficiency is among the most common causes of anemia in this setting and can develop in nearly half of patients with solid tumors and hematologic malignancies.

Is anemia a symptom of non Hodgkin's lymphoma?

Blood tests can help your doctors detect the presence of some of the telltale signs of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. These may include anemia, or low levels of red blood cells, which are needed to carry oxygen to the body's organs and tissues. A common symptom of anemia is fatigue.

Can benign tumors cause anemia?

Anemia of chronic disease can result from chronic inflammation caused by ongoing infections, tissue damage, various forms of arthritis, benign or malignant tumors, or a variety of chronic medical conditions.

Can GERD cause low iron?

Acid reflux is a symptom of GERD, which may cause iron deficiency anemia.

Can gastroenteritis cause anemia?

Gastroenteritis is considered one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in children especially in developing countries. It is a major childhood problem in Gaza and one of the most common etiologic agents of iron deficiency anemia (IDA).

Can hemorrhoids cause low ferritin?

Health conditions such as ulcers, polyps, or hemorrhoids can each cause iron deficiency anemia. The instance of hemorrhoids causing anemia to this extreme is not common, but it does happen. Bleeding rectally due to hemorrhoids can lead to large amounts of blood being lost from the body.
