Toxicity to pets

When a battery is punctured or swallowed, the alkaline or acidic material can leak out and cause corrosive injury to the mouth and other body tissues. The most common types of batteries ingested or chewed on by dogs are alkaline dry cell batteries (e.g., 9-volt, D, C, AA, AAA) or button/disc batteries.

Can you swallow a AA battery?

Regular, alkaline batteries are also extremely dangerous if swallowed, but that's less likely because of their larger size. If your child swallows any type of battery, this is considered an emergency and you should immediately take your child to a hospital emergency department.

When we held the 9V to our tongue, about 1-2mA was flowing between the terminals. Because the tongue consists of a thin membrane with nerve endings near the surface, we could readily feel the current as it excited the nerves. Anything higher than 9V could be potentially dangerous to our poor tongue.

Why do batteries shock your tongue?

The watery surface of tongue attracts the electric charge of 9-volt battery. You can also do this experiment on other wet parts of your body, as touching the battery with wet hands can give you more of a shock.

For household batteries, this “acid” is actually alkaline – thanks to the potassium hydroxide chemical make-up. For lead batteries, sulfuric acid is the dangerous residue, which requires a different type of clean-up.

What is inside a AAAA battery?

Rechargeable AAAA batteries mostly come as Nickel Cadmium (NiCd), Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH), and Lithium-ion batteries. Nickel Cadmium (NiCd) AAAA batteries are rarely used today due to the cadmium, which is heavy metal and toxic pollutant.

What is the liquid inside a battery?

The battery contains a liquid electrolyte such as sulfuric acid, a dangerous corrosive liquid. A dry-cell battery does not contain liquid. Smaller dry-cell batteries, such as alkaline or lithium ion, are typically used in portable electronics, such as toys, phones and laptops.
