What is the purpose of soffit vents?
John Johnson Are soffit vents necessary?
So, does my roof need soffit vents? A roof may need soffit vents if there is no other ventilation allowing for adequate air movement. However, if the attic space is properly sealed and insulated, there is no need for this type of ventilation.
What happens when soffit vents are blocked?
If your soffit vents are blocked, this can cause many problems. The first problem is that the temperature in your attic will increase. It can cause the shingles on your roof to deteriorate and can also lead to ice dams in the winter. Another problem is that the moisture in the air will increase.
Why does soffit need to be vented?
The purpose of venting soffits is to evenly distribute an airflow throughout the roof space to ensure the roof remains dry and free from mold.

Will soffit vents stop condensation?
Once the air enters the soffits, it moves along the underside of the roof sheathing. As it flows across the sheathing, moisture is pulled away along with the air movement. This prevents condensation (and mold growth in the attic) from occurring.
What happens if attic is not vented?
And if you don't vent correctly, all that warm, wet heat is going to sit around and take up space in your attic. The more heat that seeps out into your attic, whether it's through poorly sealed openings (things like recessed lighting or the attic entry) or through general physics, the cooler the rooms feel.

Do I need soffit vents if I have an attic fan?
Ventilation is important and can help keep an attic dry and lower air temperatures, but not having any ventilation isn't the worst case scenario. If you don't have soffit vents, we recommend you add some other vents in the lower part of the attic that can function like soffits.
Should soffits be sealed?

After soffit is installed, it is important to properly seal it from the many outdoor elements it can come across.
Should I use vented or solid soffit?
Vented Soffit Panels Increase Air Circulation
Due to the small perforations, vented soffit panels increase the air circulation of the attic area. Solid soffit panels, on the contrary, effectively seal off the attic space from fresh air, causing the air inside to become trapped and grow stale.
Can soffits cause damp?
Soffits are also crucial to the airflow of a house as they come in vented varieties, allowing air to circulate through the roof whilst limiting moisture and preventing dampness.
Why is my ceiling always wet?
The most common cause of ceiling condensation is an attic with too little insulation and ventilation. In an attic like this, wintertime ceiling condensation can form when cold air from the attic hits your warm ceiling. In summer, when the air conditioning is on, the reverse happens.
Are roof vents a good idea?
Roof vents are important because they extend the life of your roof, reduce energy costs, and reduce indoor temperature extremes. They also prevent damage to your shingles and prevent them from cracking.

Attic ventilation fans help cool air your attic by pushing out the stifling hot air from inside the attic and bringing in cool air from outside. This prevents hot air from seeping into your home and driving up the temperature in the living space, which reduces the load on your air conditioner.
How often should you have a soffit vent?
The long answer on this varies based on a simple formula – you need 1 SF for every 150 which is to be split equally from the ridge to the soffit. For a typical gable style roof you can then divide that answer in two and you have the “net free area” of ventilation required per side.
How far apart are soffit vents?
How far apart should soffit vents be? Most professionals recommend one square foot of ventilation for every 150 square feet of attic area. This will help you determine how many soffit vents you need.
