What is the example of deletion?
John Johnson genetic syndrome
When the genetic disorder is inherited from one or both parents, it is also classified as a hereditary disease. Some disorders are caused by a mutation on the X chromosome and have X-linked inheritance. Very few disorders are inherited on the Y chromosome or mitochondrial DNA (due to their size).

What is an example of chromosome deletion?
Examples of chromosomal deletion syndromes include 5p-Deletion (cri du chat syndrome), 4p-Deletion (Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome), Prader–Willi syndrome, and Angelman syndrome.
Is deletion an example of gene mutation?
Definition. A deletion, as related to genomics, is a type of mutation that involves the loss of one or more nucleotides from a segment of DNA.
What are types of deletion?
Types of deletion include the following:
- Terminal deletion – a deletion that occurs towards the end of a chromosome.
- Intercalary/interstitial deletion – a deletion that occurs from the interior of a chromosome.
- Microdeletion – a relatively small amount of deletion (up to 5Mb that could include a dozen genes).
What is deletion in DNA?
Listen to pronunciation. (deh-LEE-shun) A type of genetic change that involves the absence of a segment of DNA. It may be as small as a single base but can vary significantly in size.

What is an example of an insertion mutation?
An example of an insertion mutation is fragile X syndrome. In this mutation, an excess of 200 CGG nucleotide repeats are inserted into the gene, making it non-functional.
What does deletion mean?
Definition of deletion
1 : the act of deleting. 2a : something deleted. b(1) : the absence of a section of genetic material from a gene or chromosome. (2) : the mutational process that results in a deletion. Synonyms Example Sentences Learn More About deletion.
Which of the following disorder is an example of deletion?
Among the better-characterized deletion disorders are cri du chat (French for "cry of the cat") syndrome, named for the distinctive cry affected infants make due in part to malformations of the larynx, and Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS).
What is the cause of deletion?
Deletion is the loss of genetic material. Any number of nucleotides can be deleted, from a single base to an entire piece of chromosome. Deletions can be caused by errors in chromosomal crossover during meiosis. This causes several serious genetic diseases.
What is an example of inversion mutation?
One well known example of an inversion mutation in humans is hemophilia, a disease that inhibits the ability of blood to clot. Researchers discovered the gene responsible for hemophilia years ago, but also found that DNA from a person with hemophilia had the same genetic makeup as a person without the disease.
What type of mutation causes sickle cell anemia?
Mutations in the HBB gene cause sickle cell disease. The HBB gene provides instructions for making one part of hemoglobin. Hemoglobin consists of four protein subunits, typically, two subunits called alpha-globin and two subunits called beta-globin.
What causes a deletion mutation?
A deletion mutation occurs when a wrinkle forms on the DNA template strand and subsequently causes a nucleotide to be omitted from the replicated strand (Figure 3).
Which are examples of chromosomal mutations?
Chromosomal mutation examples include chromosome deletion, duplication, inversion, and translation. These are known to cause different kinds of genetic and chromosomal mutation diseases.
What are deletion syndromes?
Chromosomal deletion syndromes result from loss of parts of chromosomes. They may cause severe congenital anomalies and significant intellectual and physical disability.
What is deletion and duplication?
The key difference between deletion and duplication of chromosome is that deletion of chromosome results in the loss of genetic material while duplication of chromosome results in the gain of extra copies of genetic material. Chromosomes carry the genetic material of an organism.
Is Down syndrome a duplication mutation?
Causes. Most cases of Down syndrome result from trisomy 21 , which means each cell in the body has three copies of chromosome 21 instead of the usual two copies.
What is chromosome 22 deletion?
Overview. DiGeorge syndrome, more accurately known by a broader term — 22q11. 2 deletion syndrome — is a disorder caused when a small part of chromosome 22 is missing. This deletion results in the poor development of several body systems.
What disorder is caused by the deletion of part of a chromosome?
Cri du chat syndrome - also known as 5p- syndrome and cat cry syndrome - is a rare genetic condition that is caused by the deletion (a missing piece) of genetic material on the small arm (the p arm) of chromosome 5.
What disorder is caused by the deletion of part of a chromosome 5?
Cri-du-chat (cat's cry) syndrome, also known as 5p- (5p minus) syndrome, is a chromosomal condition that results when a piece of chromosome 5 is missing . Infants with this condition often have a high-pitched cry that sounds like that of a cat.
How do you use deletion?

- You will be asked to confirm deletion - be brave - select the YES button! ...
- At diagnosis, the incidence of p16 homozygous and hemizygous deletion in this group was 32% and 20% respectively.

What is an example of an insertion?
It can be used literally to describe, for example, the insertion of a page in a binder, but it also can be used more figuratively. For example, the insertion of the president into office happens every four years. And your brother may constantly make insertions into discussions he knows nothing about.
What are insertions and deletions?
Insertion. An insertion changes the DNA sequence by adding one or more nucleotides to the gene. As a result, the protein made from the gene may not function properly. Deletion. A deletion changes the DNA sequence by removing at least one nucleotide in a gene.
What is an example of a frameshift mutation?
An example of frameshift mutation can be observed in the case of Crohn's disease. The disease is associated with the NOD2 gene. A mutation occurs due to the insertion of the cytosine nucleotide at the 3020 position on the gene.
