What are sagging and hogging moment?

The bending moment which causes a beam to bend with the concave side upwards, is called a Sagging Bending Moment. This kind of bending moment is treated as a positive bending moment. On the other hand, the bending moment which causes a beam to bend with the concave side upwards is called a Hogging Bending Moment.

What is Hogging moment in beam?

The moment that makes beam to concave downward is called Hogging moment. It is taken as negative moment. The upward point is under tension and below point is at tension.

What is a sagging moment?

noun. a bending moment that produces concave bending at the middle of a simple supported beamAlso called: positive bending moment.

What causes a ship for hogging and sagging?

During loading and discharging cargo, ships bend (hog or sag) due to the distribution of the weights in the various holds and tanks on board. The maximum amount of cargo that a vessel can load often depends on whether her Plimsoll mark is submerged or not.

Difference between Sagging and Hogging of Beam

What is the difference between panting and pounding?

Panting stresses is an in and out motion of the plating in the bows of a ship and is caused by unequal water pressure as the bow passes through successive waves. ii. Pounding stresses is exist when ships is pitching. Ship's bows lift clear of the water and come down heavily.

Is Hogging positive or negative?

Hogging is positive or negative:- Hogging is negative bending moment, and band in convex face structure in upward direction.

What is the difference between cantilever and beam?

Double overhanging: A simple beam with both ends extending beyond its supports. Continuous: A beam extending over more than two supports. Cantilever: A projecting beam fixed only at one end, while the other end has no support. Below we will analyze some classic loading examples of these beam categories.

How do I stop sagging and hogging?

How to Avoid Hogging and sagging? On a large containership, those responsible for loading the ship have to take care to avoid straining the vessel's hull. If too much weight is placed amidships the vessel will sag. As the vessel cannot submerge her load line mark amidships she will not be able to load her full cargo.

What is shear bending?

Shear Force – The shear force at any point along a loaded beam may be defined as the algebraic sum of all vertical forces acting on either side of the point on the beam. The net effect of the shear force is to shear off the beam along with the point at which it is acting.

What hogging means?

Hogging is defined as taking or keeping too much for yourself and not sharing. When you steal all of the blankets on your bed and leave your spouse with nothing, this is an example of a time when you are hogging the blankets.

Why is a sagging moment positive?

Bending moment is said to be positive (sagging) moment at a section when it is acting in an anticlockwise (ACW) direction to the right and negative (hogging) moment when acting in a clockwise (CW) direction (Figure 4.14). Get Strength of Materials now with the O'Reilly learning platform.

What are the types of beam?

Types of beam structure

• Continuous beams. A continuous beam is one that has two or more supports that reinforce the beam. ...
• Simply supported beams. Simply supported beams are those that have supports at both end of the beam. ...
• Fixed beams. ...
• Overhanging beams. ...
• Cantilever beam.

What is hogging in turbine?

1) Hogging is when the turbine is shut down faster than normal or under trip conditions and the natural cooling of the rotor is not allowed to happen, usually happens when the barring system fails to start, the rotor bends in an upward motion in the middle and makes contact with the stator or casing thus allowing ...

What is sagging in physics class 11?

Sagging means bending a beam from the middle under the action of an applied stress.

What is the difference between point of inflection and Contraflexure?

That is, the point of contraflexure is for Bending Moment Diagram while Point of inflection is the corresponding point in Elastic curve of the beam and here beam changes curvature.

What is panting in ship?

Panting refers to the contiguous bellowing-in and bellowing-out nature of the ship's hull plating due to variable water pressure distribution caused as a result of waves. This effect is accentuated in the forward region when the ship surges headway through.

What is Loadicator on ships?

Loadicator provides information on the trim and list that the vessel will have in a particular stage of the stowage. Other than trim and list, we also ensure that shear forces and bending moments does not exceed the safe limits. Loadicators give the SF and BM values as the percentage of allowed limit.

What are the 3 types of stress on ship?

Stresses in Ships

• Longitudinal stresses (hogging and sagging)
• Transverse stresses (racking and the effects of water pressure)
• Local dynamic stresses (panting and pounding)

What is a propped beam?

A cantilever beam for which one end is fixed and other is provided support, in order to resist the deflection of the beam, is called a propped cantilever beam. A cantilever beam is a statically indeterminate beam. Such beams are also called as restrained beams, as an end is restrained from rotation.

What is hinge support?

Hinge Supports

The hinge support is capable of resisting forces acting in any direction of the plane. This support does not provide any resistance to rotation. The horizontal and vertical component of reaction can be determined using equation of equilibrium.

What is a counter lever?

noun That part of a bar or system, serving as a lever, which lies between the fulcrum and the weight.

Is shear force and shear stress the same?

Shear stress, often denoted by τ (Greek: tau), is the component of stress coplanar with a material cross section. It arises from the shear force, the component of force vector parallel to the material cross section.

What is beam deflection?

The deflection of the beam towards in a particular direction when force is applied to it is known as Beam deflection. The beam can be bent or moved away from its original position. This distance at each point along the member is the representation of the deflection.

What is the difference between positive and negative bar?

Key Differences Between Positive and Negative Reinforcement

In positive reinforcement, a favourable stimulus is added, whereas, in negative reinforcement, an unfavourable stimulus is removed. Stimuli involved in positive reinforcement, have pleasant outcomes.
