What are the 4 types of exudate?

Types of Wound Exudate

There are four types of wound drainage: serous, sanguineous, serosanguinous, and purulent.

What is exudative drainage?

Most frequently referred to as wound “drainage,” exudate is a liquid produced by the body in response to tissue damage. It bathes the wound continuously, keeping it moist, supplying nutrients, and providing the best conditions for migration of new tissue to heal the wound.

What are the 4 types of wound drainage?

Drainage can be (1) serous (clear and thin; may be present in a healthy, healing wound), (2) serosanguineous (containing blood; may also be present in a healthy, healing wound), (3) sanguineous (primarily blood), or (4) purulent (thick, white, and pus-like; may be indicative of infection and should be cultured).

What is drainage of wound?

Wound drainage is the result of the blood vessels dilating during the early stages of healing. This is possibly because certain bacteria are present at the time. Your body is creating a moist environment around the wound in an attempt to heal itself.

What is bloody drainage called?

Sanguineous drainage refers to the leakage of fresh blood from an open wound. This type of drainage is bright red in color and has a syrup-like consistency.

What color should wound drainage be?

Normal wounds have normal drainage—it's clear or there is a little bit of blood or yellow color. The amount of drainage, and the amount of blood in it, should lessen as the wound heals. Abnormal wounds look angry and have angry drainage. They get worse—more tender, more drainage, more bleeding, more swelling.

What kind of drainage indicates infection?

Purulent Drainage

Purulent can be shades of green, yellow or gray, and tend to be rather thick in consistency but can also be thin. This type of drainage often indicates infection of the wound.

How do you handle exudate wounds?

In local wound management, dressings and topical negative pressure therapy devices are the main option for managing exudate. Patients with underlying venous hypertension will require compression therapy.

What does Serosanguinous mean?

Serosanguineous means contains or relates to both blood and the liquid part of blood (serum). It usually refers to fluids collected from or leaving the body. For example, fluid leaving a wound that is serosanguineous is yellowish with small amounts of blood.

What are the different types of drainage?

Understanding the Types of Drainage Systems

• Surface Drainage System. Surface drainage systems remove excess water from the land's surface through channels or ditches. ...
• Subsurface Drainage System. Subsurface drainage systems are implemented beneath the top layer of soil. ...
• Slope Drainage System. ...
• Downspouts and Gutter Systems.

What are examples of exudate?

Examples of plant exudates include saps, gums, resins, and latex. In humans, the exudate can be seen in a wound or even in the eye.

What is the difference between Serosanguinous and Sanguineous?

Serosanguinous drainage may also appear more red, indicating an active bleed, open wound, or hemorrhage. Sanguineous drainage: Fresh blood that comes out of the wound that is normally seen during the inflammatory phase of wound healing. It reduces gradually with time and stops in most cases after a few hours.

Is pus same as exudate?

Exudate is fluid that leaks out of blood vessels into nearby tissues. The fluid is made of cells, proteins, and solid materials. Exudate may ooze from cuts or from areas of infection or inflammation. It is also called pus.

What is pus and blood drainage called?

Purulent drainage is a sign of infection. It's a white, yellow, or brown fluid and might be slightly thick in texture. It's made up of white blood cells trying to fight the infection, plus the residue from any bacteria pushed out of the wound.

Should I remove exudate from wound?

Principles of Best Practice advises that wound exudate, is an essential element of the wound healing process as it: Prevents the wound from drying out. Aids the movement of cells across the wound bed. Enables the provision of nutrients required for cell development.

Should I remove exudate?

Treatments may be combined with appropriate compression to manage underlying conditions and/or antimicrobial therapy or systemic antibiotics to manage increased bacterial load. Removal of exudate is a priority when managing high exudate wounds.

Should I clean wound exudate?

Maintenance of a moist wound healing environment is widely accepted as the 'ideal' environment for wounds to heal. Wound fluid or 'exudate' in the right amount can bathe the wound with nutrients and actively cleanse the wound's surface.

What does green drainage from a wound mean?

Wound drainage that has a milky texture and is gray, yellow, or green is known as purulent drainage. It could be a sign of infection. The drainage is thicker because it contains microorganisms, decaying bacteria, and white blood cells that attacked the site of the infection.

How do you tell if a wound is healing or infected?

After the initial discharge of a bit of pus and blood, your wound should be clear. If the discharge continues through the wound healing process and begins to smell bad or have discoloration, it's probably a sign of infection.

What is the yellowish fluid that oozes from the wound?

An infected wound can produce a yellowish, bad-smelling fluid called pus. When fluid seeps from a wound, it is called wound drainage.

What Colour is healthy exudate?

Normal Healthy exudate is thin watery, pale yellow or light red and does not adhere to the wound bed!

Does exudate mean infection?

Exudate viscosity

Normal exudate is thin and watery. Thick, sticky exudate indicates high protein levels and can indicate infection. It may also be caused by an enteric fistula, or the presence of necrotic or sloughy tissue.

What Colour is exudate?

Common Colors and Consistencies of Wound Drainage

It is made up of blood and serous fluid and is typically pink-red and thin. This drainage is common in many wounds.
