For long-term fuel storage, metal cans are better than plastic. Plastic chemicals can leach into fuel, and plastic will degrade over time. Metal can rust, but in general will last longer than plastic.

What is the proper way to store gasoline?

Keep gasoline containers tightly closed and handle them gently to avoid spills. Gasoline is a flammable liquid and should be stored at room temperature, away from potential heat sources such as the sun, a hot water heater, space heater or a furnace, and a least 50 feet away from ignition sources, such as pilot lights.

It's also antibacterial to prevent contamination and is rust-resistant, meaning nothing will leak out of rusted sections.

How To Store Gasoline Long-Term / Emergency Fuel Storage

How long can I store gasoline in a plastic container?

Though it naturally degrades and loses combustibility over time due to oxidation (exposure to oxygen) and evaporation of its volatile compounds, gasoline usually lasts three to six months when properly stored in a labeled, tightly sealed plastic container or metal tank of the capacity recommended by your fire ...

Is 10 year old gas still good?

Degradation occurs from the get-go but most gas stays fresh for a month or two without issue. However, gas that is more than two month old is generally OK to use with only minor decreases in performance. Gas that is older than a year can cause issues, like engine knocking, sputtering and clogged injectors.

Should gas cans be vented when stored?

Yes, gas cans should be vented, as the fuel vapors expand and contract as temperature changes. With this being said, make sure to store gas away from any possible flame sources (heater, water heater, etc.) and keep away from sparks.

Safety cans are available in several sizes and have various mechanisms for opening the valve to pour the liquids. Funnel spouts can be added to make pouring easier and reduce spills.

Why are metal gas cans better?
