What is meant by dot convention?

Dot convention is a technique, which gives the details about voltage polarity at the dotted terminal. This information is useful, while writing KVL equations.

What does dot mean in transformer?

The Dot Conversion (also known as the Dot Notation) is a polarity marking in a Transformer Phasing which is used to identify the phase relation between primary and secondary current and voltage in a transformer.

How do you find the dot convention?

Explanation. If the two currents flow into each dot or out of each dot, the mutual inductance (M) will be positive. On the other hand, if one current flows into a dotted end and the other leaves the dotted end, then the mutual inductance (M) will be negative.

Why are inductors Labelled L?

The symbol L for inductance was chosen to honor Heinrich Lenz (1804-1865), whose pioneering work in electromagnetic induction was instrumental in the development of the final theory.

What is SMD inductor?

What is an SMD inductor? Surface Mount Inductors, also known as SMD inductors, are passive components that are placed during surface mount manufacturing processing. They are positive reactance devices, available in many sizes and form factors optimized for particular applications.

How are inductors marked?

A three-digit code is often used to mark small inductors. The first two digits correspond to the first two digits of the value whilst the third digit is a multiplier which gives the number of zeros to be added to give the value in μH.

What is dot convention why it is required?

Dot Convention in Coupled Circuits is used to establish the choice of correct sign for the mutually induced voltages in coupled circuits.

Why CT polarity is important?

It is important to avoid continuous contact, which will short circuit the battery. If polarity is correct, the momentary contact causes a small deflection in the analog meter in the positive direction. If the deflection is negative the polarity of the current transformer is reversed.

What does the dot on a CT mean?

White Dot - Some CT's may have a white dot, or a dot of another color, like green, blue, or red. The dot only serves as an indication of the side of the current transformer intended to face the source of electricity, or line side, the high side. The dot should face that high side, the source of electricity.

What is coupled inductor?

Coupled Inductor: - A coupled inductor is an inductor with two or more windings on the same core which takes advantage of magnetic coupling to influence the behavior of each winding on the other. ▪ Transformer: - A magnetic device that transfers energy instantaneously through its magnetic field.

What is a symbol of transformer?

While the schematic symbol of a transformer may look like two coils (called windings) placed next to each other, the magnetic coupling and orientation between these two coils is also indicated within its schematic symbol.

What do the dots on the above schematic represent?

The dots tell you the relative orientation of the windings. Without them, you don't know the polarity of the voltage coming out of the secondary with respsect to the primary. In many transformer applications that doesn't matter, but when it does the dots need to be shown on the schematic.

What is mutually induced emf?

Mutual induction is defined as the property of the coils that enables it to oppose the changes in the current in another coil. With a change in the current of one coil, the flow changes too thus inducing EMF in the other coil. This phenomenon is known as mutual induction.

What is P1 P2 in CT?

P1 indicates the side on which the current source is located, whilst P2 indicates the load side.

Why CT is placed after breaker?

Because it is designed as a current transformer and acts a current source. It has a high output impedance, which means that the output current is directly proportional to the current in the primary (often a single turn - a conductor passing through the toroid).

What happens when CT reversed?

Otherwise (polarity reversed), the devices starts malfunctioning, i.e energy meter shows negative readings, relay may read negative current hence relay may activate the trip circuit, reverse power relay activation is alternator or generator circuits etc.

What is meant by coupled circuit?

By 'coupled circuits' we mean two or more circuits, often in the form of multi-turn coils sharing a magnetic circuit, where the magnetic flux produced by the current in one coil not only links with its own winding, but also with those of the other coils.

How do you read SMD inductors?

There are generally three dots that are read clockwise from the top. The first two dots indicate the significant digits of the inductance value, and the third dot indicates the multiplier. The value of inductance is obtained in Nano Henry.

What is inductor color code?

The Four color bands inductor as Green, Blue, Brown & Gold: Green = 5, Blue = 6, Brown = 100 & Gold = ±5% i.e. The fourth band as Golden color shows the tolerance of ±5%. Therefore, the value of the inductor is 560 µH – ±5%.

What is tolerance in inductor?

Tolerance on an inductor ranges anywhere from 20% to 40% of the initial value. Then you'll see a spec of the DCR max. This is the DC resistance of the inductor. And it's basically determined entirely by the length of the wire that's used in wrapping the inductor.

What is SMD transistor?

Surface Mount Transistor or SMT Transistor is an SMD electronic component made up of semiconductor material like silicon or germanium. There are 2 types of Surface Mount Transistors: NPN Type. PNP Type.

What is SMD resistor?

A surface mount resistor is a tiny rectangular ceramic body with silver conductive edges on either end. Also referred to as surface mount technology, an SMD resistor offers advantages in saving space on printed circuit boards (PCBs). It features the resistance value code printed onto it, where there is space.

What is SMD diode?

A Surface-Mounted Diode is a type that emits light and that's mounted and soldered flat against a circuit board. In this respect, it's quite unlike standard LEDs which rely on wire leads to hold them in place.
