What are leaders in lightning?

Stepped leaders develop within thunderstorm clouds when charge differences between the main region of negative charge in the middle of the thunderstorm and the small region of positive charge near the base of the storm become large (Figure 1).

What is a leader stroke?

[′lēd·ər ‚strōk] (geophysics) The entire set of events associated with the propagation of any leader between cloud and ground in a lightning discharge.

How fast is lightning stepped leader?

In general, stepped leaders travel at about 200,000 miles per hour, although speeds vary considerably. The highly visible return stroke moves upward through the leader channel at about 200 million miles per hour. The combination of the stepped leader and return stroke happens in just a fraction of a second.

What is the first step of a lightning strike?

An electric current wave, called a "return stroke", shoots UP the channel as a brilliant pulse. Behind the wave front, electric charge flows up the channel and produces a ground current. It takes the current about 1 microsecond to reach its peak value, which averages around 30,000 amperes.

What is a dart leader?

(Also called continuous leader.) The leader which, after the first stroke, typically initiates each succeeding stroke of a multiple-stroke flash lightning. (The first stroke is initiated by a stepped leader.) The dart leader derives its name from its appearance on photographs taken with streak cameras.

What color is lightning?

The distinctive blue-white color of lightning is caused by light emitted as the electrons drop back to their original energy states. Seen from above, lightning storms also produce less well-known emissions of blue or red light above the clouds, known as jets and sprites.

Is it possible to thunder without lightning?

No, it is not possible to have thunder without lightning. Thunder starts as a shockwave from the explosively expanding lightning channel when a large current causes rapid heating. However, it is possible that you might see lightning and not hear the thunder because it was too far away.

How hot is a lightning bolt?

In fact, lightning can heat the air it passes through to 50,000 degrees Fahrenheit (5 times hotter than the surface of the sun).

What does Ball lightning look like?

The bizarre phenomenon, also known as globe lightning, usually appears during thunderstorms as a floating sphere that can range in color from blue to orange to yellow, disappearing within a few seconds. It's sometimes accompanied by a hissing sound and an acrid odor.

What is a streamer in lightning?

The result of the negative charge moving toward the ground, is that the channel of air directly above the taller objects becomes positively charged. This is usually referred to as an upward streamer.

What is a upward leader?

An effective upward leader thinks critically and respectfully lets their leader know when they disagree on an issue. This point is different in every situation, but the astute upward leader knows how far they can push a disagreement without being disrespectful or being disloyal.

What are the 2 strokes of lightning?

There are two main types of lighting: intra-cloud lightning and cloud-to-ground lightning. Intra-cloud lightning is an electrical discharge between oppositely charged areas within the thunderstorm cloud. Cloud-to-ground lightning is a discharge between opposite charges in the cloud and on the ground.

What is meant by pilot streamer?

A relatively slow-moving, nonluminous lightning streamer, the existence of which has been postulated but not verified, to provide a physical explanation for the observed intermittent mode of advance of a stepped leader as it initiates a cloud-to-ground lightning discharge.

What is spark lightning?

A beautiful and deadly natural phenomenon, lightning is simply a sudden, electrostatic discharge - a 'spark' or 'flash' as charged regions in the atmosphere temporarily equalise themselves through this discharge.

What is return stroke in lightning?

The return stroke is the very bright visible flash that we see as lightning, caused by the rapid discharge of electricity. Once the step leader makes contact with a streamer, the negative charge that has accumulated along the leader channel flows rapidly to ground.

Is lightning hotter than lava?

Which is hotter the sun lava or lightning? Lightning because lightning is 70 000 degrees Fahrenheit. Lava is just 2 240 degrees Fahrenheit. So lightning is hotter than lava.

What color lightning is the strongest?

White: most powerful lightning color

White is the most dangerous color of lighting. It suggests both a low concentration of moisture and a high concentration of dust in air. We all are aware that being hit by lightning can have serious consequences.

Is lightning a fire or air?

Lightning is direct but short, fire takes its time. Lightning can set things on fire, and fire used right can generate electricity. Both are part of an elemental trinity. People of ancient times used to think that lightning was celestial fire.

Why is lightning so loud?

A big noise

It's because the amount of electrical energy that flows from the cloud to the ground is so enormous: it's like a very big waterfall of electricity. The louder the sound that you hear, the closer you are to the lightning.

Does lightning make noise?

The loud boom that you sometimes hear is created by the main lightning channel as it reaches the ground. Since you see lightning immediately and it takes the sound of thunder about 5 seconds to travel a mile, you can calculate the distance between you and the lightning.

Why do trees get hit by lightning?

WHY LIGHTNING STRIKES TREES. Because lightning tends to hit tall objects, trees are likely targets. They're especially prone to lightning strikes because electricity seeks the path of least resistance, and the sap and moisture inside a tree make it a better conductor than the surrounding air.

What is the hottest lightning?

White lightning is the hottest, and literally, all bolts radiate white color. They're an indication of a low concentration of moisture and dust in the air.

What is the strongest lightning?

• The megaflash lightning bolt spanned 477 miles across the sky.
• It covered an area from Texas to Mississippi.
• This bolt was associated with powerful storms on April 29, 2020.
• WMO declared it as the longest single lightning flash in the world.

What is hotter than lightning?

A bolt of lightning is 5 times hotter than the surface of the sun. One thing hotter is when gold atoms are smashed together by the Large Hadron Collider, but only for a split second. Another thing hotter is a supernova.
