What is armature loss?
Daniel Hoffman copper loss
Copper losses are considerable only when transformers are loaded. Thus, for such transformers copper losses are relatively less important. The performance of such transformers is compared on the basis of energy consumed in one day. All day efficiency of a transformer is always less than ordinary efficiency of it.

What are the causes of armature losses?
Rotational or mechanical losses can be caused by bearing friction, brush friction on the commutator, or air friction (called windage), which is caused by the air turbulence due to armature rotation.
What is the armature effect?
Armature reaction is the effect on the main field flux of that flux set up by the currents in the armature winding. The effect is the same for both lap- and wave-wound machines.
What are the losses in a DC motor?
The losses in the dc machine are mainly separated into five categories like electrical/copper, magnetic/core/iron, brush, mechanical, and stray.
What is armature in engine?
An armature is a device through which electric current is passed for generating torque (rotor). The current that passes through the rotor is sometimes called the armature current. The word "armature" refers to a device through which electric current is passed for generating torque.

Is armature same as coil?
A DC motor has coils of wire mounted in slots on a cylinder of ferromagnetic material, which is termed the armature. The armature is mounted on bearings and is free to rotate. It is mounted in the magnetic field produced by permanent magnets or current passing through coils of wire, which are called the field coils.
What is the role of armature in an electric motor?
The armature's role is twofold. The first is to carry current across the field, thus creating shaft torque in a rotating machine or force in a linear machine. The second role is to generate an electromotive force (EMF).
What are losses in a motor?
As their name suggests, mechanical losses are caused by movement of the motor. These include the friction in the motor bearings, friction between the brushes and the commutator, and drag on the rotor caused by turbulence of the air around it (sometimes referred to as windage loss).
What is stator loss?
These losses occur due to current flowing in stator and rotor windings. As the load changes, the current flowing in rotor and stator winding also changes and hence these losses also changes. Therefore these losses are called variable losses.
What are the two types of losses in an electric motor?
There are two main kinds of losses in electric motors, which are often referred to as iron losses and copper losses. Dealing first with iron losses, these are made up of two 'components', namely eddy current losses and hysteresis losses.
What is an armature in physics?
Armature: It is a rectangular iron core wrapped by the copper coil through which electricity passes and due to magnetic field it experiences a force and rotates. Brushes: It conducts current between stationary wires and moving parts, most commonly in a rotating shaft.
What is an armature winding?
Armature winding can be defined as, an electrical machine in which emf can be generated because of the air gap field flux. It must be noted that the air gap is produced because of the DC current flow in the winding. In general, this winding is housed on slots of the stator & the field winding on rotor slots.
What is armature voltage?
Armature voltage is the voltage developed at the terminals of the armature winding of an AC or a DC machine during generation of power.
What is iron losses in motor?
Iron losses can be divided into hysteresis losses, eddy current losses and additional losses. Iron losses are given per weight and depend on the frequency and the maximum flux density. This means that the faster the motor rotates, the higher the iron losses.
What is meant by eddy current?
Definition of eddy current
: an electric current induced by an alternating magnetic field.
What is DC loss?
The losses that occur in a DC Machine is divided into five basic categories. The various losses are Electrical or Copper losses (I2R losses), Core losses or Iron losses, Brush losses, Mechanical losses, Stray load losses. These losses are explained below in detail.
What is core loss?
Definition of core loss
: energy wasted by hysteresis and eddy currents in a magnetic core (as of an armature or transformer)
What is windage loss?
Windage loss in a generator is the power absorbed by the fluid surrounding the rotor. as a result of the relative motion between the rotor and the stator.
What is friction and windage losses?
Friction and windage losses are caused by friction in the bearings of the motor and aerodynamic losses associated with the ventilation fan and other rotating parts. Variable losses consist of resistance losses in the stator and in the rotor and miscellaneous.
What are losses in induction motor?
There are three main types losses in induction motor: Copper losses. Iron losses. Friction and windage losses.
What is the slip?
A slip is a woman's undergarment worn beneath a dress or skirt. A full slip hangs from the shoulders, usually by means of narrow straps, and extends from the breast to the fashionable skirt length. A half slip (or waist slip) hangs from the waist.
What is eddy current loss?
If an eddy current of magnitude I flows through a core path of resistance r, it will dissipate energy in the form of heat according to the power equation power = I2R. Since this represents energy being expended for no useful purpose, it is considered as an eddy current loss, sometimes called iron loss.
What is difference between armature and rotor?
It is located inside the stator and its objective is to rotate so that in turn the motor shaft or generator rotates. So basically, the rotor consists of a field magnet which rotates while the rotor remains stationary and on the other hand the armature carries current and is stationary and part of the stator.
What are the 4 parts of an armature?
Armature is the rotating part of a DC electrical machine and one of the principal components of the DC machine's electromagnetic system. Armatures are comprised of four major parts: steel shaft, steel laminated core, copper windings, and copper-segment commutator.
What is armature made of?
armature, in sculpture, a skeleton or framework used by an artist to support a figure being modeled in soft plastic material. An armature can be made from any material that is damp-resistant and rigid enough to hold such plastic materials as moist clay and plaster, which are applied to and shaped around it.
