What is 50 weight oil used for?
Daniel Davis What is 20w50 oil good for?
A SAE 20W-50 motor oil is typically used in older vehicles or in particularly warm climates. Castrol GTX 20W-50 has been specially formulated to help extend the life of your engine by keeping it free from sludge, even when operating in extremely high temperatures.
When should I use 10W50 oil?
What Is 10W-50 Oil Good For?
- Consistent clutch feel in modified high performance vehicles.
- A wet clutch in a four-stroke motorcycle or dirt bike.
- Engines operating in high temperature climates.
- Passenger cars with turbochargers and supercharged forced induction engines.
Which is better 10W50 or 20w50?
10w50 is thinner than 20w50 at low temp. So it will flow between every small parts and gives better cold start as compared to 20w50. First number lower than recommended and second number higher than recommended is good. You can go for 10w50.
Is 10W50 better than 10W40?
At 100ºC, the 10W50 has a viscosity of 18.1cS, the 10W40 is at 13.1cS. What this means is, at low temperature, they perform similarly, but at operating temperature, the 10W50 has better protection (higher film strength) than the 10W40.

Is Thicker oil better for older engines?
A: Yes. This is a practical method to improve oil pressure in an older, high-mileage engine. The slightly thicker oil film from the heavier base weight oil - 10W - can help protect worn engine bearings as well.
Is thicker engine oil better?
Within reason, thicker oil maintains a better lubricant film between moving parts. Some have even used thicker oil in a leaky engine to prevent oil from seeping out. But really, thicker oil is not good for your engine. Not when “thicker” means higher viscosity than the manufacturer recommends.
Is 20W 50 good for old cars?
20W-50 is only used for certain older vehicles or worn engines that require the extra cushioning of a high viscosity oil. Other than that, it really isn't a high mileage oil. This is because 20W-50 is a thicker oil, and the added resistance can cause further engine wear and damage to both newer and older vehicles.
Which engine oil is best for hot weather?
The ideal motor oil for your car is one that can withstand the hottest temperatures in your region while still being able to flow when the weather is at its coldest. SAE 5W30 oil is suited to a broad range of temperatures, making it one of the most commonly used oils on the market.
What is 15W 50 oil used for?
15W-50 has historically been a viscosity recommended for high performance engines, and is used today primarily in motorsports racing where engines are stressed due to high revving and heat.
Which is better 10W30 or 10W50?
If I'm not wrong, they'll both be the exact same thickness at 0°F but will perform differently at 212°F. Hence, simply put, the 10W30 will be thinner at 212°F (also read as the higher operating temperatures) than the 10W50. Oil ratings are a science on their own and this is as simple as I can make it for you.
What's the difference between 10W-50 and 10W 60?
From what I know KTM recommends 10w-60 if you live/drive regularly in ambient temps above 30 deg Celsius. It maintains lubrication at higher temps. 10w-50 provides poor lubrication at very high engine temps and wear out much faster.
What is the difference between 5w50 and 20w50?
The first number refers to its viscosity, or resistance to flow, when cold (e.g. 5W). Think of the “W” as standing for “winter.” The lower the number, the faster the oil will flow when cold, meaning a 5W-50 oil will flow faster at startup than a 20W-50 oil.
Which oil is thicker 10w40 or 20w50?
10w40 oil is a popular all-purpose oil designed in many different engines. 20w50 (also known as 10w30) is another popular all-purpose oil used in engines. The differences between 10w40 and 20w50 are small, but they have something in common: They are thicker than regular 20w50 oil.
Which is better 10w30 or 20w50?
It really comes down to personal preference. As your engine does put out significant horsepower, we would lean toward using 20W-50. If your engine sees very light duty or is built exceptionally tight, 10W-30 would be fine. But again, if you twisted our arm, we would give 20W-50 the nod for the thicker viscosity.
What happens if I use 20w50 instead of 20W40?
20W50 will hold on to the viscosity marginally better than 20W40 when the engine gets hot. However, 20W50 mineral oil will cause more sludge than a similar 20W40 because 20W50 will have more viscosity improvers. Pulsar 150's manual recommends 20W40, but you can use either, not much of a difference.
Should I use 10W40 in summer?
Either 10W30 or 10W40 for summer use is fine; however, 10W-40 motor oil will better protect your engine.
What oil weight is best for summer?
As a general rule, you'll get the best protection in the summer when you use a slightly thicker grade of oil, such as a 10W30 instead of a 5W30. Engines need a thicker oil in the summer months because of the summer heat and its effects on thinning the oil out.
Should I use a thicker oil for hot weather?
Thicker oil in the winter would clog the pumps and fail to lubricate them properly. The best motor oil for hot weather is a thicker grade oil to combat the thinning effects of the heat. In the summer, you need a motor oil that will maintain just the right amount of thickness.
Can too thick oil damage engine?
Not only that, but the engine will waste energy pumping the thicker oil, reducing fuel economy. Since thicker oil doesn't transfer heat as well as thinner oil, operating temperatures will increase, possibly leading to accelerated chemical break down (called “oxidation“) and harmful sludge and deposits.
Can you put 20W 50 in a diesel engine?
Mobil Delvac Super 20W-50 is recommended by ExxonMobil for use in the most severe applications of modern on- and off-highway diesel engines.

What oil is better for older cars?
Monograde oils are still widely available, primarily because they're used in very hot climates, or in heavy-duty applications such as mining or construction equipment. These single-grade oils can be used in 1950s and older cars – generally SAE 30 to SAE 50 – but most owners use multi-grade.
What happens if I put 10w40 instead of 5w30?
Your vehicle does not use 5W-30 oil. The recommended oil viscosity for your vehicle, according to Kia documentation, is 10W-40. If you drive the vehicle in exceptionally cold weather, well below 32 degrees, you can use 5W-30 oil but even 10W-40 is still perfectly OK to use if outdoor temperatures are below freezing.
Will synthetic oil hurt older engines?
It protects better, performs better, and lasts longer, and it's no longer made with a chemical compound that could hurt older vehicles. Modern synthetic oil is safe to use in all types of vehicles, ranging from new purchases to classics to aging not-so-classics.
