Can you drive with a bad rear differential?

You can still drive your vehicle with a bad rear differential, but it can cause severe damage. The problem may increase to the point of stopping you in the middle of nowhere. And, if you are asking about driving with a total broken differential, no, don't do it unless you want to damage the entire drivetrain system.

How do you identify a differential noise?

Whining Sounds

The most common sound of a failed differential is a whining noise. This is often due to poor lubrication within the differential, meaning there is a good chance that the differential fluid is leaking. If you spot a reddish fluid under the differential, there is certainly a leak.

How much does it cost to fix a rear differential?

The average replacement cost for a whole rear differential is between $1000 and $4000. Luckily, you can just repair it or replace it with a used differential, which will decrease the costs a lot. Most differential repairs will cost between $200 and $400 to repair.

How do you fix a noisy differential?

How to fix a noisy differential: Replacing the differential fluid may stop the sound, or replacing a pinion or side seal may solve the problem. However, once the noise gets bad, rebuilding or replacing the differential may be the best way to fix the noise.

What Does a Bad Differential or Wheel Bearing Sound Like?

What are signs of a bad differential?

Bad Differential Symptoms

• Your vehicle is quickly going through oil.
• Difficulty steering.
• A loud front differential noise, such as the grinding of gears, clunking, or a “howling” sound.
• Rear differential noises. ...
• Extensive and inexplicable wear and tear on your tires.

How long will a whining differential last?

You can change the differential fluid for the front differentials every 30,000 to 60,000 miles, and for rear differentials every 30,000 to 50,000 miles, as a general rule of thumb.

Can a bad rear differential cause transmission problems?

When the differential doesn't perform well, it creates metal-on-metal friction that wears down surfaces. The resulting heat weakens gears and can cause component failure and transmission problems. A bad differential makes the car harder to control turning corners, and that can be dangerous.

What happens when a rear differential fails?

Typically, when the gears wear out — or the bearings fail — the differential will start to howl. You'll hear something that sounds like a deep whistling sound that goes up and down in pitch as you go faster and slower. Sometimes it'll go away when you step on the gas.

How do I know if my rear end bearings are bad?

The most common and most easily identifiable symptom of a bad wheel bearing is an audible one. If you notice a grinding or grating noise coming from your wheel or tire, take note that this is very likely caused by a bad wheel bearing—especially if the noise gets louder as the vehicle accelerates.

How do you know if your rear differential needs fluid?

Another symptom of a bad differential oil is whirring, whining, or howling strange noises, indicating that the metal part, clutches, gears, and differentials have not been lubricated due to a dirty lack of clean oil.

What does a failing pinion bearing sound like?

Bad Pinion Bearing Symptoms

Noise: A bad pinion bearing will often make a whining or growling noise when the car is in motion. The noise may be worse when the car is first started, and it may change in pitch as the vehicle speed increases.

What does a bad pinion gear sound like?

A “whirring” sound generated by unloading via deceleration from most any regular road speed can likely be traced to pinion bearing failure or poor pinion bearing preload. This malady is often diagnosed as a bad ring and pinion gear.

Do differentials make noise?

If the cause of the noise is inside the differential, this can be due to either tight-meshing pinion gears, or too much backlash on these gears. Another cause could be worn out differential-case bearings, and these can also cause noise when turning.

How long can you drive with worn differential?

You can drive with a bad differential, but not for too long. But generally, you can use it for a period between ten days to ten years. This will greatly depend on the bearing's condition. But if the differential's condition is worse, it is important to replace it as early as possible.

What does a broken axle sound like?

A Loud Clanking, Clunking, or Clicking

When constant velocity axles fail, you may also hear an unusual clicking sound may when turning the vehicle as joints become loose. These clicks are on the side of the faulty axle shaft and typically become noisier during sharp or fast turns.

Is it worth fixing a differential?

The truth is that sometimes replacing your rear differential will end up costing more than your car is actually worth. But that doesn't mean you're at a total loss. You can still junk a car with broken or faulty parts—and walk away with cash for it.

How does axle bearing noise differ from differential noise?

Only difference between a wheel bearing noise and a rear differential noise would be the fact that the wheel bearing noise will change with wheel speed but usually will not change with load variations (accelerations/decelerations) while the noise from a rear differential will change with wheel speed and load.

What happens if your differential goes out?

Without it, you'd be dragging your outside wheel along the pavement whenever you turn. Typically, when the gears wear out – or the bearings fail – the differential will start to howl. You'll hear something that sounds like a deep whistling sound that goes up and down in pitch as you go faster and slower.

What does low diff oil sound like?

Low differential fluids or worn gears will sound like humming or grinding noise emitting from the diff. These noises will also have gradual changes when taking corners, decelerating, and accelerating.
