What does a negative COVID-19 antibody test result mean?

A negative result on a SARS-CoV-2 antibody test means antibodies to the virus were not detected in your blood.

It is unknown if all people who have a SARS-CoV-2 infection will develop antibodies in their bodies in an amount that can be detected by a SARS-CoV-2 antibody test.

What types of COVID-19 tests are available in the US?

Diagnostic tests can show if you have an active COVID-19 infection. Antibody or serology tests look for antibodies in a blood sample to determine if an individual has had a past infection with the virus that causes COVID-19 but cannot be used to diagnose current COVID-19 infection.

Is it recommended to have antibody testing after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine?

Antibody Testing Is Not Currently Recommended to Assess Immunity After COVID-19 Vaccination: FDA Safety Communication | FDA.

What is the purpose of serological tests?

The FDA issued information on the use of serological (antibody) tests to help identify people who may have been exposed to the SARS-CoV-2 virus or have recovered from the COVID-19 infection.

What is the purpose of COVID-19 antibody or serology tests?

SARS-CoV-2 antibody or serology tests look for antibodies in a blood sample to determine if an individual has had a past infection with the virus that causes COVID-19. These types of tests cannot be used to diagnose a current infection.

Can you have COVID-19 and still test negative for antibody test?

A negative test means that you have no COVID-19 antibodies, so you probably were not infected with the COVID-19 virus in the past. Because it takes time for antibodies to develop, false-negative test results can happen if the blood sample is collected too soon after your infection started.

Will a person with COVID-19 vaccine have a positive antibody test?

A COVID-19 vaccination may also cause a positive antibody test result for some but not all antibody tests. You should not interpret the results of your SARS-CoV-2 antibody test as an indication of a specific level of immunity or protection from SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Why antibody testing Is not currently recommended to assess immunity after COVID-19 vaccination?

Currently authorized SARS-CoV-2 antibody tests have not been evaluated to assess the level of protection provided by an immune response to COVID-19 vaccination. If antibody test results are interpreted incorrectly, there is a potential risk that people may take fewer precautions against SARS-CoV-2 exposure.

How long does it take for immunity to wane after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine?

A study published by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that immunity against severe COVID-19 begins to wane four months after receiving a so-called "booster" third dose of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines.

What is the most accurate diagnostic test to detect COVID-19?

Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR)-based diagnostic tests (which detect viral nucleic acids) are considered the gold standard for detecting current SARS-CoV-2 infection.

What are the different types of viral tests?

Viral Test Types

• Laboratory tests can take days to complete and include RT-“PCR” tests and other types of nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs).
• Rapid Point-of-Care tests can be performed in minutes and can include antigen tests, some NAATs, and other tests.

Which COVID-19 tests are more accurate PCR or antigen tests?

PCR tests are more accurate than antigen tests. "PCR tests are the gold standard for detecting SARS-CoV-2," says Dr. Broadhurst. "It is the most accurate testing modality that we have.

Can a COVID-19 antibody test tell you how much protection you might have?

Test results from currently authorized SARS-CoV-2 antibody tests should not be used to evaluate a person's level of immunity or protection from COVID-19.

Can an antibody test be used to diagnose a current COVID-19 infection?

An antibody test cannot be used to diagnose current COVID-19 because an antibody test does not detect SARS-CoV-2. Only COVID-19 diagnostic tests can be used to diagnose current COVID-19. A positive antibody test result can be used to help identify people who may have had a prior SARS-CoV-2 infection or prior COVID-19.

When can antibodies be detected after COVID-19 infection?

After infection with the COVID-19 virus, it can take two to three weeks to develop enough antibodies to be detected in an antibody test, so it's important that you're not tested too soon.

Can you still test positive after recovering from COVID-19?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, some people who contract COVID-19 can have detectable virus for up to three months, but that doesn't mean they are contagious. When it comes to testing, however, the PCR tests are more likely to continue picking up the virus following infection.

What is the difference between antibodies and the vaccine in the context of COVID-19?

While antibodies and vaccines are both viable options to counteract the virus that causes COVID-19, there are major differences. While an antibody may immediately help treat an existing infection, a vaccine will train the immune system to protect against future infections. Can I take antibiotics after getting a COVID-19 vaccine?

Can I take antibiotics after I get a vaccine?

Yes. If you need antibiotics for a bacterial infection, you should take them. They won't affect how well the vaccine works.

Do COVID-19 antibody tests detect vaccine antibodies?

• Some antibody tests will only detect antibodies from infection, not from vaccination with the virus that causes COVID-19.

How long do COVID-19 antibodies last?

At this time, it is unknown for how long antibodies persist following infection and if the presence of antibodies confers protective immunity.

Can you be asymptomatic if infected after being vaccinated for COVID-19?

Indeed, it is possible that vaccinated people who get infected may easily remain asymptomatic or present with mild symptoms and thus go unnoticed.

What is a false positive COVID-19 antibody test?

Sometimes a person can test positive for SARS-CoV-2 antibodies when they do not actually have those specific antibodies. This is called a false positive.

What is the accuracy of the COVID-19 antigen test?

If possible, taking an at-home rapid COVID-19 test the day of the event is ideal. While these tests aren't 100% accurate, a negative result strongly suggests that you're not contagious at that particular time.

Do people produce COVID-19 antibodies after infection?

Most people who've recovered from COVID-19 do make antibodies against the virus.
