Are white matter lesions serious?

Some white matter lesions may not cause noticeable symptoms and can be considered almost “normal” with aging. However, some of these lesions can damage important pathways (highways) within your brain and can cause problems with memory, balance and walking.

What diseases cause white matter lesions?

Some examples of conditions that affect white matter include:

• MS.
• Lyme disease.
• Balo concentric sclerosis.
• tumefactive demyelinating lesions.
• Marburg and Schilder variants.
• neuromyelitis optica, or Devic's disease.
• acute disseminated encephalomyelitis.
• acute hemorrhagic leukoencephalopathy, or Hurst disease.

What causes white matter lesions on MRI?

White spots on a brain MRI are not always a reason for concern. There are many possible causes, including vitamin deficiencies, infections, migraines, and strokes. Other risk factors for white spots include age, genetics, obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol.

What does white matter on brain MRI mean?

White matter disease is commonly detected on brain MRI of aging individuals as white matter hyperintensities (WMH), or 'leukoaraiosis.” Over the years it has become increasingly clear that the presence and extent of WMH is a radiographic marker of small cerebral vessel disease and an important predictor of the life- ...

MS white matter lesions

Can white matter lesions be nothing?

Studies have found that white matter lesions appear in some degree on brain scans of most older adults but less often in younger people. White matter lesions are among the most common incidental findings—which means the lesions have no clinical significance—on brain scans of people of any age.

Is white matter on brain serious?

Originally, white matter disease was considered a normal, age-related change. But over the last decade, medical experts have come to understand that the presence of large areas of disease in the white matter of the brain are associated with cognitive decline and dementia in patients.

How do you treat white matter lesions?

There isn't a specific treatment. The goal is to treat the cause of the damage and stop the disease from getting worse. Your doctor may prescribe medicines to lower your blood pressure or cholesterol.

Can anxiety cause white matter lesions?

Conclusions: Non-clinical individuals with high anxiety already have white matter alterations in the thalamus-cortical circuit and some emotion-related areas that were widely reported in anxiety-related disorders. The altered white matter may be a vulnerability marker in individuals at high risk of clinical anxiety.

Do brain lesions always mean MS?

Although MRI is a very useful diagnostic tool, a normal MRI of the brain does not rule out the possibility of MS. About 5 percent of people who are confirmed to have MS do not initially have brain lesions evidenced by MRI.

What do white lesions on the brain mean?

White matter lesions (WMLs) are areas of abnormal myelination in the brain. These lesions are best visualized as hyperintensities on T2 weighted and FLAIR (Fluid-attenuated inversion recovery) sequences of magnetic resonance imaging. They are considered a marker of small vessel disease.

What do lesions on the brain indicate?

Brain lesions are a type of damage to any part of brain. Lesions can be due to disease, trauma or a birth defect. Sometimes lesions appear in a specific area of the brain. At other times, the lesions are present in a large part of the brain tissue.

What causes brain lesions besides MS?

Brain lesions can be caused by injury, infection, exposure to certain chemicals, problems with the immune system, and more.

Is white matter dementia?

White matter has a legitimate position in the study of dementia. The neuropathology of white matter disorders is typically diffuse or widespread, thus disrupting many networks simultaneously and producing a multi-domain syndrome that merits the term dementia.

What is the prognosis for white matter disease?

The life expectancy after a diagnosis of white matter disease depends on the speed it progresses and the severity of any other conditions it may cause, like stroke and dementia. White matter disease is believed to be a factor in both strokes and dementia. However, more research must be done for further confirmation.

How common is white matter in brain?

In the general population the prevalence of white matter hyperintensities ranges from 11-21% in adults aged around 64 to 94% at age 82. Pathological findings in regions of white matter hyperintensity include myelin pallor, tissue rarefaction associated with loss of myelin and axons, and mild gliosis.

Are white matter signal abnormalities clinically relevant?

From a research perspective, we have come to understand that there is at least a weak relationship between white matter signal abnormalities and cognition, although the jury is still out about whether and to what extent this is clinically meaningful.

Is white matter disease same as MS?

The white matter lesions in neurosarcoidosis can be similar to those in MS, but neurosarcoidosis also causes leptomeningeal enhancement and cranial nerve enhancement, which are not seen in MS.

Does white matter increase with age?

Age-correlated studies reveal that the changes in white matter may be much higher than those of gray matter (Miller et al., 1980). Upto 40 years of age, the white matter volume increases and is closely related to the formation of the myelin sheath (Courchesne et al., 2000; Bartzokis, 2004).

Can white matter disease cause headaches?

Patients with extensive white matter hyperintensities are likely to have tension-type headaches or to have headaches develop during middle age, according to results published in Cephalagia. Currently, there are no established treatments or strategies for managing white matter hyperintensities.

Is white matter disease treatable?

Treatments: While there is no known cure for white matter disease, treatments can help to manage the symptoms. Controlling the risk factors associated with heart disease can help decrease the progression of the disease.

What are the symptoms of white matter on the brain?

While white matter disease has been associated with strokes, cognitive loss, and dementia, it also has some physical and emotional symptoms such as balance problems, falls, depression, and difficulty multitasking (e.g., walking and talking.)

Can brain lesions disappear?

Conclusions: Brainstem lesions in MS patients can disappear on subsequent imaging. Disappearing MRI lesions may delay the diagnosis. These results suggest that more weight should be given to the reported clinical brainstem events, especially in the initial diagnosis of MS.

What do white spots on a brain CT scan mean?

They now are considered a sign of small blood vessel disease in the brain and may occur when blood flow is reduced due to various medical conditions.

Do white spots on the brain mean dementia?

Conclusion White matter lesions, especially in the periventricular region, increase the risk of dementia in elderly people. Cerebral white matter lesions (WML) in elderly people are thought to result from small-vessel disease and are considered to be a risk factor for dementia.
