What did grinding the potato up do to the rate of reaction?
Emma Valentine What did cooking the potato do to the rate of reaction?
Boiling a potato will speed up its enzyme chemical reaction, but if you heat it up to much it will cook and the reaction will stop because all of the enzymes will be cooked.
Why did grinding the liver and potato affect the reaction?
The liver contains more because it detoxifies substances in the body. A larger amount of catalase lowers the activation energy, therefore speeds up the rate of reaction. The potato contains less of the enzyme catalase, therefore requires more activation energy, slowing down the rate of reaction.
How does crushing the potato affect the enzyme's activity?
With the large pieces of potatoes, the catalase enzyme were only exposed to the surface of the pieces whereas, the mashed potatoes covered a larger surface area for the enzyme to act upon resulting in greater enzymatic activity.
How did increasing the temperature of the potato affect the activity of the catalase?
When heated, catalase activity will increase. Boiling the potato will activate the catalase so it can break down hydrogen peroxide.
effect of temp on potato catalase enzyme reaction
What is the effect of temperature on catalase activity?
Catalase activity decreases after optimal temperature. This happens because the enzyme becomes denatured. Denaturing is when an enzyme loses its shape at the active site.
Why are potatoes high in catalase?
Catalase is also found in plants. Potatoes, particularly, contain high amounts of catalase, which is mysterious because plants do not filter toxins from food. Catalase is involved with photorespiration, however, which explains its presence, but does not account for its abundance.
How does the concentration of potato catalase affect the rate of decomposition of hydrogen peroxide?
Conclusion The rate of decomposition of hydrogen peroxide into oxygen and water, catalyzed by the enzyme catalase from potato skin, increases with the concentration of catalase.
Does catalase speed up reaction?
Enzymes are biological catalysts which increase the speed of a chemical reaction. They are large protein molecules and are very specific to certain reactions. Hydrogen peroxide decomposes slowly in light to produce oxygen and water. The enzyme catalase can speed up (catalyse) this reaction.
Why does chopped potato react with hydrogen peroxide?
This reaction is caused by catalase, an enzyme within the potato. You are observing catalase breaking hydrogen peroxide into oxygen and water.
Why is the reaction faster when the liver is ground up?
Grinding produces smaller particles of liver and more surface area for reaction.
What effect does pulping the liver have upon the reaction?
When the liver had been pulped, the reaction was more vigorous due to theincreased surface area for the enzyme to act on. The greater the surface area, the moreexposed it is to the reactant. Catalase in liver detoxifies chemicals while the catalase in potato prevents theoxidation of starch.
What speeds up the rate of a chemical reaction?
In general, increasing the concentration of a reactant in solution, increasing the surface area of a solid reactant, and increasing the temperature of the reaction system will all increase the rate of a reaction. A reaction can also be sped up by adding a catalyst to the reaction mixture.
What is the purpose of potato enzyme experiment?
Catalase, an enzyme found inside a potato, breaks down hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen gas. The advantage of this reaction is that you can see the oxygen gas bubbling out as it is formed so you can tell how fast the reaction is happening.
What happens when crushed potato is placed in hydrogen peroxide?
Fresh potato shows an interesting chemical activity. When dipped in a solution of hydrogen peroxide, it triggers bubbling of oxygen. This activity is due to a special protein produced by the potato to protect itself against oxidative stress.
How do you make potato catalase?
(Irish potatoes are rich in catalase.)
...
Prepare a potato homogenate.
- Cut whole potato into cubes.
- Measure an equal volume of water to the weight of potato cubes (e.g., 25 g of potatoes: 25 mL of distilled water) into a blender.
- Homogenize for approximately 30 seconds.
- Filter mixture through cheesecloth into a beaker.
How do enzymes increase the rate of reaction?
Enzymes (and other catalysts) act by reducing the activation energy, thereby increasing the rate of reaction. The increased rate is the same in both the forward and reverse directions, since both must pass through the same transition state.
What may affect the rate of an enzyme driven reaction?
Several factors affect the rate at which enzymatic reactions proceed - temperature, pH, enzyme concentration, substrate concentration, and the presence of any inhibitors or activators.
Why does enzyme concentration increase reaction rate?
Increasing Substrate Concentration increases the rate of reaction. This is because more substrate molecules will be colliding with enzyme molecules, so more product will be formed.
Which concentration of catalase will produce the fastest reaction rate?
Which concentration of catalase had the fastest reaction time, the slowest reaction time? The concentration of catalase that had the fastest reaction time was the 75% catalase concentration, while the slowest reaction time was the 0% catalase concentration.
What is the effect of changing the concentration of the catalase?
As the concentration increased there were more and more opportunities for the hydrogen peroxide to bind the active sites of the catalase and react with a lower activation energy.
How can the rate of decomposition of hydrogen peroxide be increased?
It can be sped up by increasing the temperature, which triggers the reaction of thermal decomposition. This reaction can be carried out in a liquid or vapour phase. Usually the rate of reaction is increased by adding catalysts to the reactor.
How do potato react in the presence of oxygen?
When potatoes, eggplant or apples are peeled or cut, certain enzymes are exposed to air. When an enzyme called polyphenol oxidase, also known as tyrosinase is exposed to oxygen, oxidation takes place, which leads to browning of the surfaces of these fruits. Present of oxygen in the air.
What effect does catalase concentration have on the rate of the reaction in this simulation?
What effect does catalase concentration have on the rate of the reaction in this simulation? Adding more catalase speeds up the reaction. Enzymatic activity can be measured in two ways. Catalase is an enzyme that converts the substrate hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) into the products water (H2O) and oxygen (O2).
In which potato was catalase the most active Why do you think this was?
We predict that the Russet potato will have the highest concentration of catalase.
