What causes an alternator to short out?
John Johnson How do you know if your alternator is shorted?
Disconnect the big main cable to the alternator and see if the short goes away. If it does, then use your meter to measure the ohms between the alternator post and the alternator case. You should have continuity in one direction and if you switch leads you'll have no continuity.
What kills an alternator?
Running in full charge mode continuously can kill an alternator, so trying to have your new alternator try and charge your dead battery can result in immediate alternator failure.
What would make an alternator keep going bad?
There are a few issues that could make the alternator go bad, such as jump-starting the car the wrong way or installing an accessory that overloads it. Leaking fluid in the alternator or a tight belt can also cause damage to the alternator bearings, causing premature wearing.
Do alternators go out suddenly?
When your alternator begins to fail it can cause a variety of different electrical problems in your car, and eventually cause a breakdown. Alternators can go bad suddenly, or slowly over time.

What is the lifespan of an alternator?
How Long Does an Alternator Last? An alternator should last between 80,000 to 150,000 miles, which usually means around 7-10 years. However, if your vehicle is driven hard around Venice or Bradenton, your alternator may need to be replaced sooner.
How does a car act when the alternator is going out?
If your alternator is failing, its voltage may drop below capacity, causing the battery warning light to appear on your dash. Similarly, the battery light will also appear if the alternator is exceeding its voltage limit, depending on how much stress it is under.
Can a bad ground cause an alternator to overcharge?
Can a bad ground cause an alternator to overcharge? It's debatable whether a bad ground will cause the alternator to overcharge. The problem is more likely to cause the alternator to undercharge, as the power is lost on its way to the battery.
Can a bad battery make an alternator go bad?
Absolutely yes. I sell alternators all day every day - and a poor battery is often the root cause of alternator failure. If your battery is 'Open Circuit' the alternator will either not start charging at all or will erratically bounce from low to high voltage.
Can an alternator go bad without warning?
There are only a few ways an alternator can go bad, but they tend to happen suddenly without a lot of warning. Here are the common symptoms: Undercharging – This is the most common problem, and can often be caught in the early stages.
Can a weak battery destroy an alternator?
A weak battery cannot have any effect on alternator, but a poor or weak alternator can deteriorate the battery very quickly. A broken battery also has an effect on an alternator as it puts more pressure and stress on the alternator while working and sometimes destroy the alternator as well.
What can drain a car battery when the car is off?
What may drain a car battery when it's off are things such as interior lights, door lights, or even bad relays. While your engine runs, the alternator recharges the battery — which is why you typically don't have to worry about the battery dying while you're blasting the radio on your drive to work!
Will a failing alternator throw a code?
HOW TO DIAGNOSE A FAILING ALTERNATOR. If you have a “Check Engine" light on, connect a code reader to the diagnostic port. If you find code P0562, you very likely have a failing alternator (note that codes may vary by vehicle make/model/year). Get it checked out before it fails entirely.
Can oil short out an alternator?
It would be difficult to say exactly how much oil it would take to cause the alternator to fail. However, oil leaking on the alternator due to leaking valve cover gaskets can cause it to fail.
How do you tell if it's my alternator or battery?
If the engine starts but dies immediately, your alternator probably isn't keeping your battery charged. If a jump starts and keeps your car running, but the car can't start again off of its own power, a dead battery is probably your answer.
How do I know if my alternator is draining my battery?
A battery test is easy to perform and can be done at home. First, open the hood and start the car. While the engine is running, remove the negative cable from the battery. If the vehicle stalls or dies, the alternator is likely bad.
What drains car battery overnight?
This can be a result of various factors including the number one cause which is leaving headlights, glove box lights, or cabin lights on overnight. Parasitic drain can also be caused by defective fuses, bad wiring, and poor installation of a new car battery.
How do I know if my voltage regulator is bad?
Another way you can tell the voltage regulator is bad is when the car lights keep dimming or flickering. After all, the voltage regulator is supposed to keep the power flowing to the lights, so it's no surprise that those lights don't work right anymore once this part goes bad.
What happens if your alternator is not grounded?
Poor ground connections are a cause of low charging output. There are positive and negative battery cable connections, the BAT+ power connection, and the engine ground strap. Overcharging can be caused by voltage dropping on the negative side.
How do I test my alternator?

- Get a multimeter.
- Set your multimeter to DCV (DC Volts) above 15.
- Make sure your alternator's positive and negative terminals are clean.
- Put the multimeter's black cable to the negative terminal and the red cable to the positive terminal.
- Look for an ideal alternator reading of around 12.6.
What shortens the life of alternator?
The harder your alternator has to work, the shorter its performance life. If your vehicle frequently performs heavy-duty hauling, has to run for extended periods, or if you love turning up your headlights and sound systems to the max settings, you are putting a strain on your alternator.
How often do you need a new alternator?
Numerous factors work with and against alternators, so it's tough to pinpoint an exact lifespan of an alternator. However, we can say with near certainty that an alternator will not last for the average life of a vehicle. In general, you can expect alternators to last about 6-10 years, or about 80,000-150,000 miles.
