Which AM detector is commonly used?

The diode detector is the simplest form of detector or demodulator used for AM demodulation – it detects the AM signal envelope. The diode detector is the simplest and most basic form of amplitude modulation, AM signal detector and it detects the envelope of the AM signal.

What are the types of AM demodulator?

The following demodulators (detectors) are used for demodulating AM wave.

• Square Law Demodulator.
• Envelope Detector.

What are the methods for detecting the AM waves?

The detection of AM radio signals is a diode application. The modulated AM carrier wave is received by the antenna of the radio receiver and is rectified by the action of a detector diode.

How many types of distortions are there in AM detector circuit?

There are two types of distortions which can occur in the detector output such as : Diagonal clipping. Negative peak clipping.

AM Demodulators (AM Detectors) - Envelope Detector and Its Operation

What is coherent detector?

A detector in which (a) both the phase and the amplitude of the received signal are used and (b) a phase reference signal is used to remove out-of-phase noise. Note: Examples of coherent detectors are specialized photodetectors and demodulators.

Why is it called synchronous detector?

In electronics, a synchronous detector is a device that recovers information from a modulated signal by mixing the signal with a replica of the un-modulated carrier. This can be locally generated at the receiver using a phase-locked loop or other techniques.

Which are the two methods of AM generation?

AM generation involves mixing of a carrier and an information signal. In low level modulation, the message signal and carrier signal are modulated at low power levels and then amplified. The advantage of this technique is that a small audio amplifier is sufficient to amplify the message signal.

Why envelope detector is mostly used in AM detection?

Such a device is often used to demodulate AM radio signals because the envelope of the modulated signal is equivalent to the baseband signal.

What are the types of FM detector?

There are different types of FM demodulators including:

• Slope Detector.
• Foster-Seeley Discriminator.
• Ratio Detector.
• Pulse-Averaging Discriminators.
• Quadrature Detectors.
• Phase-Locked Loops.

What is synchronous detection of AM signal?

Explanation: Synchronous detection of AM signal requires local generation of the carrier signal at the receiver. The frequency of the locally generated carrier must be identical to that of transmitted carrier.

What is AM modulator and demodulator?

Demodulation is a key process in the reception of any amplitude modulated signals whether used for broadcast or two way radio communication systems. Demodulation is the process by which the original information bearing signal, i.e. the modulation is extracted from the incoming overall received signal.

What is amplitude modulation detection?

A device for recovering information from an amplitude-modulated (AM) electrical signal. Such a signal is received, usually at radio frequency, with information impressed in one of several forms.

What are RF detectors used for?

RF detectors are used primarily to measure and control RF power in wireless systems. Why are power measurement and control so important? RF power, rather than voltage, is the primary measure of a wireless signal. In a receiver, signal strength is a key factor in maintaining reliable com- munications.

What is the range of AM frequencies?

The AM band in the United States covers frequencies from 540 kHz up to 1700 kHz, in 10 kHz steps (540, 550, 560 ... 1680, 1690, 1700). 530 kHz in the United States is not available for broadcast use, but is reserved for the use of very low powered Travelers' Information Stations.

Why rectifier is used in AM modulation?

Diode / rectifier - serves to pass one half of the received signal over the other. Low pass filter - required to remove the high frequency content that remains in the signal after detection / demodulation.

How many diodes are used in envelope detector?

Just one diode, one capacitor, and one resistor.

What is slope detector?

FM slope detection is a concept that can used be recover the modulation from an FM signal. It is simple because it can be used with virtually any radio even if it is not equipped , with an FM capability. It simply uses the selectivity of the radio, or the slope of a tuned circuit.

What are the main components of envelope detector?

It consists of two main elements: Diode / rectifier - serves to enhance one half of the received signal over the other. Low pass filter - required to remove the high frequency elements that remain within the signal after detection / demodulation.

What are the types of AM generation?

They are;

• Double sideband-suppressed carrier modulation (DSB-SC).
• Single Sideband Modulation (SSB).
• Vestigial Sideband Modulation (VSB).

What are the types of generation of AM signal?

AM generation involves mixing of a carrier and an information signal. In low level modulation, the message signal and carrier signal are modulated at low power levels and then amplified. The advantage of this technique is that a small audio amplifier is sufficient to amplify the message signal.

What are the applications of AM?

Amplitude modulation applications

• Broadcast transmissions: AM is still widely used for broadcasting on the long, medium and short wave bands. ...
• Air band radio: VHF transmissions for many airborne applications still use AM. .

What is synchronous or coherent detection?

We assume that this locally generated carrier is exactly coherent or synchronized in both frequency and phase with the original carrier wave c(t) used to generate the DSB-SC wave . This method of detection is therefore called as coherent detection or synchronous detection .

What operates in synchronous detector?

A synchronous detector consists of a reference value mixed (multiplied) with a specific modulation frequency to generate a modulated stimulus signal that is fed to the system under test (SUT) (Fig. 1). The SUT output is again mixed with the same modulation frequency.

What is synchronous detection for SSB SC?

Here, the same carrier signal (which is used for generating SSBSC wave) is used to detect the message signal. Hence, this process of detection is called as coherent or synchronous detection.
