What is epidemiological data?

By definition, epidemiology is the study (scientific, systematic, and data-driven) of the distribution (frequency, pattern) and determinants (causes, risk factors) of health-related states and events (not just diseases) in specified populations (neighborhood, school, city, state, country, global).

What are the 4 types of descriptive epidemiological studies?

Three of the types of descriptive epidemiologic studies are in- dividual case reports, case series, and cross-sectional studies (e.g., a survey of a population). Case reports and case series are among the most basic types of descriptive studies.

What are the four methods of epidemiology?

Epidemiological investigations can be grouped into four broad categories: Observational epidemiology, experimental epidemiology, natural experiments, and Theoretical epidemiology.

What are the 4 important elements of epidemiology research studies?

The elements include identification of a relevant study population of adequate size; appropriate assessment and accurate measurement of uranium exposure in the population, including the use of biomarkers when available; an evaluation of long-term health outcomes; adequate followup time; use of reasonable methods for ...

What are different types of epidemiology?

Epidemiologic studies fall into two categories: experimental and observational.

• Not an analytical or epidemiologic study.

How many types of epidemiology are there?

The three major epidemiologic techniques are descriptive, analytic, and experimental. Although all three can be used in investigating the occurrence of disease, the method used most is descriptive epidemiology.

What are the 3 main elements of the definition of epidemiology?

The epidemiologic triangle is made up of three parts: agent, host and environment.

How is epidemiology data used?

Epidemiological information is used to plan and evaluate strategies to prevent illness and as a guide to the management of patients in whom disease has already developed. Like the clinical findings and pathology, the epidemiology of a disease is an integral part of its basic description.

Why is epidemiological data important?

Epidemiologic data are paramount to targeting and implementing evidence-based control measures to protect the public's health and safety. Nowhere are data more important than during a field epidemiologic investigation to identify the cause of an urgent public health problem that requires immediate intervention.

What are the 5 W's of epidemiology?

The difference is that epidemiologists tend to use synonyms for the 5 W's: diagnosis or health event (what), person (who), place (where), time (when), and causes, risk factors, and modes of transmission (why/how).

What are the two major types of epidemiological studies?

Epidemiologists conduct two main types of analytic studies: experimental and observational. Experimental studies use a randomized selection process. A process based on chance is used to assign study subjects to different exposure groups.

What are epidemiological studies?

Epidemiologic studies are the foundation for disease control and prevention through tracking the prevalence of the disease, characterizing the natural history, and identifying determinants or causes of the disease. . It defines risk factors for a disease and targets for preventive medicine.

What are epidemiological records?

The Weekly Epidemiological Record (WER) serves as an essential instrument for the rapid and accurate dissemination of epidemiological information on cases and outbreaks of diseases under the International Health Regulations and on other communicable diseases of public health importance, including emerging or re- ...

What are the 5 main objectives of epidemiology?

In the mid-1980s, five major tasks of epidemiology in public health practice were identified: public health surveillance, field investigation, analytic studies, evaluation, and linkages.

What are the 7 uses of epidemiology?

There are, he argues, seven main uses for the science of epidemiology: in historical study; in 'community diagnosis' or population studies; in the calculation of individual risks; for health services research; as an aid to clinical understanding; in the identification and labelling of disease; and, lastly and ...

What are basic measurements of epidemiology?

The measures used in epidemiology can be divided into three classes: frequency, association, and potential impact. The measures of heath event frequency can be divided into incidence and prevalence.

What are epidemiological factors?

1: Epidemiologic Factors Events, characteristics, or other definable entities that have the potential to bring about a change in a health condition or other defined outcome.

What are tools of epidemiology?

Epidemiology offers powerful tools to quantify the degree to which risk factors and humanitarian interventions affect population health in a crisis. These tools include surveys, surveillance, analysis of programme data, and rapid assessment.

What are the 4 types of diseases?

There are four main types of disease: infectious diseases, deficiency diseases, hereditary diseases (including both genetic diseases and non-genetic hereditary diseases), and physiological diseases.

What are the 3 types of observational study?

Three types of observational studies include cohort studies, case-control studies, and cross-sectional studies (Figure 1).

What are examples of epidemiological studies?

What is the objective of epidemiology?

The objective of epidemiology is to figure out what causes different health outcomes in different groups of people. These groups can be as small as a neighborhood or as large as the global population. Epidemiologists look at symptoms, patterns, and other factors.

What is the difference between epidemiology and statistics?

Epidemiologists study the distribution and determinants of health and disease in populations. Biostatisticians develop and apply statistical theory, methods and techniques to public health research data and the planning, implementation and evaluation of public health programs.
