Portals of entry into the human body include:

• Inhalation (via the respiratory tract)
• Absorption (via mucous membranes such as the eyes)
• Ingestion (via the gastrointestinal tract)
• Inoculation (as the result of an inoculation injury)
• Introduction (via the insertion of medical devices)

What is an example of a portal of entry for an infection into the body?

The opening where an infectious disease enters the host's body such as mucus membranes, open wounds, or tubes inserted in body cavities like urinary catheters or feeding tubes.

What is the most common portal of entry?

In order for a pathogen to gain access to the host, the pathogen must pass through a portal of entry. One of the most common portals of entry is the mucous membranes, especially those of the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and urogenital tracts. Another important portal of entry is the skin.

Which of the following is an example of a portal of exit?

A portal of exit is the site from where micro-organisms leave the host to enter another host and cause disease/infection. For example, a micro-organism may leave the reservoir through the nose or mouth when someone sneezes or coughs, or in faeces.

What are the portals of entry of microorganisms?

The portals of entry are mucosal, respiratory, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, and cutaneous.

Portals of Entry

What are the 4 methods of transmitting diseases through the portals of entry?

The modes (means) of transmission are: Contact (direct and/or indirect), Droplet, Airborne, Vector and Common Vehicle. The portal of entry is the means by which the infectious microorganisms gains access into the new host. This can occur, for example, through ingestion, breathing, or skin puncture.

What are the portal of entry and exit?

Portals of entry and exit in horizontal transmission include all body surfaces, or the blood stream, by arthropod bite. Vertical transmission may occur in the ovum, via the placenta, during birth, or in the colostrum or milk. The mode of exit is not necessarily the same as the portal of entry.

Is saliva a portal of entry?

In humans, the main portals of exit include: Alimentary: vomiting, diarrhea, saliva. Genitourinary: sexual contact.

What are the 5 portals of exit?

In humans the key portals of exit are:

• Alimentary – via vomiting, diarrhoea or biting.
• Genitourinary – via sexual transmission.
• Respiratory – through coughing, sneezing and talking.
• Skin – via skin lesions.
• Trans-placental – where transmission is from mother to foetus.

Is urine a portal of exit?

Portals of exit is the means by which a pathogen exits from a reservoir. For a human reservoir, the portal of exit can include blood, respiratory secretions, and anything exiting from the gastrointestinal or urinary tracts.

Which of the following are common portals of entry quizlet?

The most common portals of entry are? skin, mucus membranes of the respiratory tract digestive tract and genitourinary tract, placenta and the parenteral route, including breaks in the skin such as cuts, bites and open wounds.

Which of the following is an example of the most common entry site for infection?

Common sites of entry include the mucosal linings of the respiratory, alimentary, and urogenital tracts, the outer surface of the eye (conjunctival membranes or cornea), and the skin (Fig. 1). The most common route of viral entry is through the respiratory tract.

What is the parenteral portal of entry?

Pathogens that enter the body in this way are said to enter by the parenteral route. For example, the skin is a good natural barrier to pathogens, but breaks in the skin (e.g., wounds, insect bites, animal bites, needle pricks) can provide a parenteral portal of entry for microorganisms.

What are the 4 routes of transmission?

Diseases can spread in many ways

• Airborne transmission. Airborne transmission occurs when infectious agents are carried by dust suspended in the air. ...
• Respiratory (droplet) transmission. ...
• Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) ...
• Animal or insect transmission. ...
• Food or water transmission. ...
• Health care transmission.

Is skin a portal of entry?

A portal of entry is the site through which micro-organisms enter the susceptible host and cause disease/infection. Infectious agents enter the body through various portals, including the mucous membranes, the skin, the respiratory and the gastrointestinal tracts.

Is blood a portal of entry for pathogens?

Other portals of entry include the skin (hookworm), mucous membranes (syphilis), and blood (hepatitis B, human immunodeficiency virus).

What is the portal of entry for E coli?

The most common portal of entry was the urinary tract (56.9%). Most E. coli isolates belonged to phylogenetic group B2 (52.0%).

What are the 5 modes of disease transmission?

The transmission of microorganisms can be divided into the following five main routes: direct contact, fomites, aerosol (airborne), oral (ingestion), and vectorborne. Some microorganisms can be transmitted by more than one route.

Which of the following is an example of the parenteral route?

Administration by injection (parenteral administration) includes the following routes: Subcutaneous (under the skin) Intramuscular (in a muscle) Intravenous (in a vein)

Is hair follicle a parenteral route?

All of the following are examples of entry via the parenteral route EXCEPT: -hair follicle. -bite.

Which of the following is not a portal of entry for pathogen?

Which of the following is NOT a portal of entry for pathogens? e. parenteral route.

What are the portals of entry for viruses?

Viruses are able to gain entry into the body through a variety of different portals. These include the respiratory tract, gastrointestinal tract, or genital tract, as well as infection of the skin or underlying subcutaneous tissue.

What are the 4 types of infections?

The four different categories of infectious agents are bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites. When studying these agents, researchers isolate them using certain characteristics: Size of the infectious agent.

What are the 4 types of diseases with examples?

There are four main types of disease: infectious diseases, deficiency diseases, hereditary diseases (including both genetic diseases and non-genetic hereditary diseases), and physiological diseases. Diseases can also be classified in other ways, such as communicable versus non-communicable diseases.

Which could be considered a portal of entry for pathogens quizlet?
