This ancient giant probably formed part of a forest canopy, beneath which, conifers, ginkgo trees and ferns along with other flowering plants thrived. The fossil has been assigned to the Paraphyllanthoxylon genus, as such, it is distantly related to numerous types of tropical flowering tree found today.

When did the first trees appear?

Remarkably well-preserved ancient trees show cellular anatomy from millions of years ago. Cladoxylopsida were the first large trees to appear on Earth, arising almost 400 million years ago in the Devonian period.

Although grasses are dominant in habitats across the world today, they weren't thought to exist until some ten million years after the age of dinosaurs had ended. Dinosaurs ruled between 275 and 65 million years ago, but the earliest verified grass fossils are from about 55 million years ago.

What plants survived the dinosaur extinction?

The dinosaurs were lost, forests were leveled and four out of five species of plant went extinct in areas close to the impact site. And yet, from the ashes of the impact, the first life to recolonize these areas were the ferns.

What major plants lived in the Jurassic period?

Instead, ferns, ginkgoes, bennettitaleans or "cycadeoids", and true cycads -- like the living cycad pictured at the above right -- flourished in the Jurassic. Conifers were also present, including close relatives of living redwoods, cypresses, pines, and yews.

Did trees survive dinosaur extinction?

Plants and trees survived the mass extinction, one of the largest in the Earth's history.

How did alligators survive the dinosaur extinction?
