Which valves should be open on a radiator?

Step 3 – Open All Your Radiator Valves

Open up the valves on every radiator in the house by turning them anti-clockwise. Thermostatic valves or older wheel-head valves can be turned quite easily by hand but the lockshield valve will need a plastic adjuster or a spanner to open it.

Should radiator valves be open or closed?

A Lockshield valve is used to adjust how quickly a radiator takes before warming up – opening means more hot water flows through quicker whereas closing slows down the heating process, so things do not get too hot too fast.

What do the 2 valves on a radiator do?

Each radiator will have two valves. One will control the amount of hot water that enters the radiator and the other will balance the system by controlling how much heat comes out of your radiator. This is known as the 'lockshield valve'.

Should my lockshield valves be fully open?

On a new system all lockshields valves fully open - probably no problem, but as the system parts get older (pump etc) you may find some rads will get hotter than others - then balancing will be necessary.

How to turn different radiator valves off

How much should lockshield be open?

You should open the Lockshield valve on the first radiator by one-quarter of a turn. Now open the Lockshield valve on the last radiator on your list. Each radiator in between should have its Lockshield valve opened slightly more than the previous radiator.

What happens if a lockshield valve is closed?

On most radiators, this is the valve you can't turn by hand. By closing a fully-open lockshield valve by a few turns (with a pair of grips or screwdriver), you can slow down the rate at which water enters the radiator and reduce the speed with which it gets hot.

Are both radiator valves the same?

Generally, there are two different style radiator valves (that are adjustable by the user) available. These are manual valves and Thermostatic Radiator Valves (also known as TRVs). Manual valves are quite simple devices that you can think of like a tap in your home.

Which side of a radiator turns it off?

To turn a radiator off, locate the thermostatic valve on the left side and turn the valve clockwise until the dial reads 0. Next, find the second valve on the right side of the radiator and twist it clockwise until it won't turn anymore. Once both valves are closed, the radiator will be completely turned off.

Should towel rail valves be fully open?

Should they be fully open? A standard heated towel rail / towel radiator is designed to come on and off with the central heating system. If the valve is fully open, the maximum amount of hot water will be entering the radiator and heating up the rail to the temperature set for the whole central-heating system.

Why is 1 radiator in my house cold?

Why is one radiator cold when the heating is on? One cold radiator usually indicates that either there is air in the system or there is a stuck valve within that radiator. The thermostatic radiator valve (TRV), like the one pictured below, controls the flow of hot water to the radiator.

Why are some of my radiators hotter than others?

Some radiators occationally get quite a bit warmer than others. When this happens it usually means that your central heating system is out of balance. In some instances, radiators can be different temperatures due to the distance that water that heats them has to travel from the boiler or pump.

Which side should lockshield valve be?

Systems are normally balanced by adjusting the lockshield valves usually fitted on the return side of each radiator. This ensures that each radiator circuit in the system has an equal pressure drop and receives the correct flow of hot water to heat the space in which it is fitted.

What are the two pipes on a radiator?

The two-pipe system consists of – you've guessed correctly – two separate pipes: one that feeds hot water to the radiators and one that conveys used water back to the boiler. In other words, the radiators are installed in parallel.

What are the 2 valves on a towel radiator?

One valve accounts for the amount of hot water that enters the radiator. The other valve, referred to as the lockshield valve, balances the system by regulating how much heat the radiator gives off.

What is the difference between a lockshield and radiator valve?

The Lockshield valve restricts hot water flow to radiators to help balance the entire system as a whole. Other radiator valves can be used to help adjust the temperature of a radiator to help heat or cool a room.

Should one radiator always be on with central heating?

Generally, one radiator should be left permanently switched on: this is the 'bypass' radiator. This radiator may be a bathroom towel rail (where the heat is always likely to be useful), or in the same room as the room thermostat (see below). TRVs are found on radiators other than the bypass radiator.

Should radiator valve be on flow or return?

Should TRVs be installed on the flow or the return pipe when fitting a radiator? Most modern thermostatic radiator valves are bi-directional – so can be fitted on either the flow or return pipe of your radiator. However, it's always best practice to fit the TRV on the flow pipe that enters your radiator.

Do I need lockshield valve?

A lockshield valve helps to balance out that radiator and ensure the whole system is in sync, with all radiators heating at the same rate. It is therefore every bit as important a valve as without the system being balanced, there is often little point adjusting an individual temperature valve.

Do you bleed a radiator when it is on or off?

Turn off your heating. You can't bleed a radiator when the heating is on, as it may be too hot to touch. You could also get hot water spraying out of the radiator. Use your radiator key to turn the valve at the top of the radiator.
