Is PPG better than ECG?
Nathan Sanders What is PPG vs ECG?
ECG (electrocardiography) sensors measure the bio-potential generated by electrical signals that control the expansion and contraction of heart chambers. PPG (photoplethysmography) sensors use a light-based technology to sense the rate of blood flow as controlled by the heart's pumping action.
Is ECG better than heart rate monitor?
An electrical heart rate sensor, also called an ECG, measures your heart rate by measuring electrical signals in your blood. Based on these electrical signals, an ECG heart rate monitor measures the timing and strength of your heart rate. An ECG heart rate monitor is more accurate than an optical heart rate monitor.
How accurate is PPG?
The PPG-accuracy, defined as the proportion of PPG measurements within 100 ms of ECG measurements, was 94.6% (95%CI 94.1–95.1). The accuracy within 50 ms range was 89.2% (95%CI 88.5–89.9).
What does PPG ECG stand for?
Among these, both PhotoPlethysmoGraphy (PPG) and Electrocardiography (ECG) signals are those more employed. PPG signals are an emerging non-invasive measurement technique used to study blood volume pulsations through the detection and analysis of the back-scattered optical radiation coming from the skin.

What can PPG tell us?
A photoplethysmogram (PPG) is an optically obtained plethysmogram that can be used to detect blood volume changes in the microvascular bed of tissue. A PPG is often obtained by using a pulse oximeter which illuminates the skin and measures changes in light absorption.
Can PPG measure blood pressure?
Recent publications showed that PPG alone may be used to monitor BP continuously. In our previous work, we found that in continuous monitoring, PPG-derived BP achieved an accuracy of 0.06 ± 7.08 mmHg for systolic blood pressure (SBP), and 0.01 ± 4.66 mmHg for diastolic blood pressure (DBP) with initial calibration7.
How much does a PPG sensor cost?
Photoplethysmographic (PPG) sensors generally require >10 components, occupy an area >300 mm(2), consume >10 mW power, and cost >$20 USD.
Can PPG be used for HRV analysis?
Photoplethysmography (PPG) sensors integrated in wearable devices such as smart watches and phones are widely used to measure heart activities. HRV requires accurate estimation of time interval between consecutive peaks in the PPG signal.
Are ECG watches accurate?
The smart watch–generated ECGs were 93% to 95% accurate at correctly identifying and distinguishing between different types of heart attacks. Among the healthy people, the watch's accuracy was 90% for correctly noting the absence of a heart attack. The findings were published online Aug. 31, 2020, by JAMA Cardiology.
Is ECG and pulse rate same?
Heart rate (HR) is a measure traditionally computed from the ECG, and thus is derived from electrical cardiac activity. The ECG signal is recorded by placing electrodes in contact with the skin - usually on the chest but also sometimes on the wrists. This ECG represents electrical cardiac activity.
Are personal ECG monitors worth it?
A personal-use ECG monitor won't be as accurate as a clinical or hospital-grade ECG machine. These machines are meant to enhance the information your doctor can use to manage your condition, but they are not a replacement for regular medical care.
What is PPG heart sensor?
Abstract. Photoplethysmography (PPG) is an uncomplicated and inexpensive optical measurement method that is often used for heart rate monitoring purposes. PPG is a non-invasive technology that uses a light source and a photodetector at the surface of skin to measure the volumetric variations of blood circulation.
Are EKG and ECG the same?
An electrocardiogram records the electrical signals in the heart. It's a common and painless test used to quickly detect heart problems and monitor the heart's health. An electrocardiogram — also called ECG or EKG — is often done in a health care provider's office, a clinic or a hospital room.
How do PPG sensors work?
working principle of the PPG sensor is based on the emission of infrared light by an LED which penetrates the skin and blood vessels. This light is captured by the detector to measure the blood stream, as can be observed in Figure 6.
Are HRV monitors accurate?
Due to the limitations of those hardware devices, we generally do not recommend them for reliable HRV readings. These devices are fine for just getting your basic heart rate though! Many devices claim to be "ECG accurate", but they are not specifying for what parameters.
Is pulse variability reliable?
Heart rate variability (HRV) is a reliable reflection of the many physiological factors modulating the normal rhythm of the heart. In fact, they provide a powerful means of observing the interplay between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems.
How accurate is HRV?
Results: Twenty-three studies yielded 301 effects and revealed that HRV measurements acquired from portable devices differed from those obtained from ECG (ES = 0.23, 95% CI 0.05-0.42), although this effect was small and highly heterogeneous (I2 = 78.6%, 95% CI 76.2-80.7).
What is PPG ultrasound?
The PPG (photoplethysmography) Toe Pressure and the related Toe Brachial Index (TBI) are performed to assess the vascular condition of the foot by obtaining systolic pressures at the toe.
Does Apple Watch use PPG?
The two main health sensors in the Apple Watch series 4 are an enhanced PhotoPlethysmoGram (PPG) and, for the first time in an Apple watch, an ECG. The PPG is the core of the continuous heartbeat sensor.
What is PPG medical?
"Physician Group" or "Participating Physician Group (PPG)" means the medical group the individual Member selected as the source of ELECT 1/HMO covered medical care. This may also refer to the provider of services under ELECT Open Access 2/PPO.
When was Photoplethysmography invented?
This technique was introduced in 1937 by Hertzman. He was the first to use the term photoplethysmography and suggested that the resultant plethysmogram represented volumetric changes of blood in the skin's vessels. The plethysmogram is usually described with respect to its AC and DC components.
Is pulse oximetry the same as PPG?
Photoplethysmography (PPG) is an optical technique that measures blood volume variations. The main application of dual-wavelength PPG is pulse oximetry, in which the arterial oxygen saturation (SpO2) is calculated noninvasively.
Does ECG measure heart rate?
An ECG is used to see how the heart is functioning. It mainly records how often the heart beats (heart rate) and how regularly it beats (heart rhythm). It can give us important information, for instance about possible narrowing of the coronary arteries, a heart attack or an irregular heartbeat like atrial fibrillation.
