Does it hurt to mix different weights of oil?

The good news is that mixing different types of oil it will not harm your engine in any way in the short run. Most synthetic and semi-synthetic engine oils are based on regular oil and are compatible.

Is it OK to mix oil viscosities?

yes you can mix same brand and type oils with different viscosity and it will be fine as long as you don't mix them 50/50.

Can you mix the same oil weights?

THE ANSWER IS NO!

Even if two different brands of oil have the same viscosity, you still should not be mixing them together.

Can you use a different oil weight?

It's best to use the oil viscosity recommended in the owner's manual, but using a slightly thinner or thicker oil (lighter or heavier viscosity) generally poses no long-term harm.

Will Mixing 10 Motor Oils Damage an Engine? Let's find out!

Is it OK to mix 10w30 and 10W40?

Mixing 10W30 with 10W40

Some say that mixing them is fine as long as you don't live in freezing weather. Even if you put together synthetic and conventional blends of these motor oils, they show no harm to your vehicle. However, this is true only if you mix in a quart of the other type to your usual engine oil.

What happens if I put 10W40 instead of 5w30?

Your vehicle does not use 5W-30 oil. The recommended oil viscosity for your vehicle, according to Kia documentation, is 10W-40. If you drive the vehicle in exceptionally cold weather, well below 32 degrees, you can use 5W-30 oil but even 10W-40 is still perfectly OK to use if outdoor temperatures are below freezing.

Can you mix 5W 20 and 10w 30?

Notwithstanding the recommendations of the car manufacturer, mixing 10w30 and 5w20 will not cause any sort of harm to the engine. However, a few drivers claim that it is safer to combine two multi-grade or straight weight oils, rather than mixing multi-grade with straight weight oils.

Can I mix 0w40 with 5w30?

Can I Mix 0W-40 With 5W-30 Engine Oil? Yes, if your car manufacturer approves it. If not, you should only use the approved oil. 0W-40 and 5W-30 oils can be combined because 5W-30 is thicker oil than 0W-40, and the extra, lower viscosity will make the start-up oil flow easy and efficient.

Can I mix 15w40 with 10w30?

you can mix the two without a problem, for Wisconsin, the 15w 40 would be a better oil in the summer and 10w 30 would be a better oil for the winter, if you drive the car in the winter! I have Rotella 15w40 weight oil in my LT-1 now and I just found a place that sells 10w30 which would be a better choice.

Can I put 5w40 instead of 5w30?

In practice, this means that each oil is just as viscous at lower temperatures and will remain viscous at -30°C, however 5w40 oil outperforms 5w30 oils at higher temperatures, being effective up to ambient temperatures of 50°C, as opposed to 30°C.

Can you mix 5w40 with 15w40?

Mixing a dino with a syn, a syn with a dino, a 5W-40 with a 15W-40, and so on is fine. You aren't going to get an additive clash, the different base stock of x brand of oil won't sponteously combust with the other x brand of oil that you are blending it with and make your engine throw a rod.

Can you mix SAE 30 with 15w40?

These two oils are completed mixable at any ratio.

What's the difference between 5w 20 and 5w 30?

5w20 is an engine oil type characterized by its winter rating of 5 and an oil weight of 20 in warmer conditions. It is less viscous compared to 5w30. 5w30 has the same viscosity rating of 5 during winter but an oil weight of 30 during hotter conditions hence it is thicker.

What if I put 10w30 instead of 5w30?

Both 5w30 and 10w30 engine oils have a similar SAE rating, meaning that they will perform the same at high or operating temperatures. The digits 30 indicates the viscosity of the oils when in high temperatures. 10w30, however, will thicken more when in a cold climate. 5w30 is much suitable during the cold season.

What happens if you mix engine oil?

Mixing different types can destabilize your motor oil, reducing its efficiency and affecting your engine's performance. The smartest choice is to stick with the oil type and oil change intervals recommended by your car's manufacturer and visit your local car care experts for affordable services.

Is it OK to mix 5w 20 and 5w30?

Yes, you can mix 5W20 and 5W30 oil. However, your engine MUST support it. Both oils should be of the same brand to prevent engine damage and should also be of a similar API service level.

Can I mix oil grades in my car?

No, you don't want to blend two different weights together. We have all been in a situation where we're trying to make a dollar out of 15 cents, which usually includes keeping the car running on a tight budget. You can indeed use the same oil weight already in the vehicle, but mixing weights just isn't recommended.

Can I mix 20w50 with 10w50?

So the basic rule of thumb, when using synthetic oil the right hand number is the most important in the summer and the left hand number dictates the winter behavior. So, if you're car calls for a 20w50 then you can safely use 5w50, 10w50 or 15w50 in the synthetic oils.

Can you mix 20w50 with 15w40?

Unless you are at the fringes of temperature range for the 15w-40 oil, putting the 20w-50 in isn't going to change the viscosity of the oil enough to damage anything.

Will thicker oil damage my engine?

Using oil that is thicker than recommended may lead to a decrease in fuel economy, a higher load on your engine, and even a shorter life for your engine. Conversely, using thinner, lighter-weight oil than recommended can cause excessive wear and shorter life.

Is Thicker oil better for high mileage cars?

The slightly thicker oil film from the heavier base weight oil - 10W - can help protect worn engine bearings as well. As long as you're not hearing knocking or serious mechanical noises from the engine, the heavier oil should buy you many more miles of service from your vehicle.

Is 10W40 good for high mileage?

Designed for high mileage vehicles

Mobil 1 High Mileage 10W-40 motor oil is recommended by ExxonMobil for use in high mileage vehicles (even those that have used lower quality conventional oils^†), including: Cars. Trucks.

What happens if I put 10W40 instead of 10W30?

10W40 has a higher viscosity than 10W30. This means that when you pour 10W40 into your engine, it will have a harder time flowing through the engine and moving around the parts. However, if you use 10W40 instead of 10W30, the oil will stay in place better without leaking out or dispersing throughout your engine.
