Does downshifting hurt the clutch?

Myth #5: It's normal for the car to lurch when downshifting.

As you accelerate and upshift you don't have to worry about rev-matching. By giving the engine just a bit of throttle when you downshift you can make the clutch engagement smoother, which reduces clutch wear and head bobbing on downshifts.

Can I downshift from 4th to 2nd?

Rather than rowing through all five or six gears, drivers will skip from third to fifth, fourth to sixth and so on. But is this practice safe to do? Engineering Explained tackled the common practice in its latest episode and the short answer is yes, it's perfectly OK to skip gears when upshifting or downshifting.

Should you always rev match when downshifting?

When you downshift on a motorcycle, the engine RPMs increase. If you do it without rev-matching, the engine will feel bogged down and the motorcycle will also lurch forward. This can be avoided by simply rev-matching while downshifting.

Can you rev with the clutch in?

Clutches are not designed to 'pull' a car into moving, and this extra stress put into the clutch can cause quick wear and burn out. Using rev matching by blipping your throttle while the clutch pedal is pressed down is a way of taking this extra work away from the clutch.

Is slowing down with gears bad?

If you downshift into a gear at a RPM that is within the norm of driving then no, no harm done. When you downshift what is slowing you down is actually the compression stroke and is recommended over hard braking.

Does downshifting increase speed?

The purpose of "downshifting", or shifting the transmission down from a higher gear to a lower gear, is so that a driver can accelerate their car as fast as possible when exiting a corner that they had to slow down for.

What should your RPM be at 70 mph?
