How is graphite grease made?
Emma Valentine What is graphite lubricant made of?
Graphite is structurally composed of planes of polycyclic carbon atoms that are hexagonal in orientation. The distance of carbon atoms between planes is longer and, therefore, the bonding is weaker. Graphite is best suited for lubrication in air. Water vapor is a necessary component for graphite lubrication.

What makes graphite a good lubricant?
Between the carbon layers in graphite there are van der waal forces which are very weak. Therefore, the layers of carbon atoms are able to slide over each other allowing graphite to be used as a lubricant.
Does graphite help motor oil?
“Graphite increases the ability of engines to run successfully, even if they're running slightly low on oil,” he says.
