Where do you put a foot valve?

The foot valve is required to be installed at the bottom of the well suction line piping. Similar to the check valve, the foot valve prevents water from flowing back out of the jet pump. This protects against loss of prime in the well piping system.

How far off the bottom of a well should the pump be?

Well depth plays a role in pump placement. Pumps should never be set directly at the bottom of a well. It is usually best to place the pump 10 to 20 feet up from the bottom of the well.

How far should check valve be from well pump?

If the pump does not have a built-in check valve, a line check valve should be installed in the discharge pipe within 25 feet of the pump and below the drawdown level of the water in the well. For deeper settings, a line check valve is recommended every 200 feet.

Does a foot valve have to be vertical?

It is very important to install a Foot Valve in a vertical position to help insure a trouble free operation. If the installation instructions are not followed warranty or any warranty claims may be void.

Replacing a Well Foot Valve

Which is better foot valve or check valve?

As the name implies, a 'foot' valve goes at the end of the pump. As a result, it only has one thread instead of two. Therefore, if you need a valve that goes on the end of your pump, a foot valve is an ideal choice.

Where should a check valve be installed on a well pump?

Many well pumps have built-in check valves. Even if a pump does have a built-in check valve, we recommend that a check valve be installed in the discharge line within 25 feet of the pump and below the draw down level of the water supply.

Where do I put a check valve on a shallow well?

The check valve should be installed in the suction side piping as close to the source of water as possible. It should not be installed within 2' of the pump's inlet, or anywhere on the discharge side of the pump.

What height should a sump pump check valve be installed?

Best height ( unless owner's manual states otherwise) is two to three feet off of the top of the sump pit. This way your sump pump motor doesn't have to work as hard as when your check valve is in lower position. It will open easier due to the reduced weight of water above it.

How far can you pump water from a well?

Different well pumps can push water different distances. For example, a well pump with a single line tends to push water a maximum of 25 feet vertically. Comparatively, shallow well pumps can push water 30 feet vertically.

How deep should a well be for drinking water?

For drinking water wells it's best to be at least 100 feet deep so that surface contaminants cannot enter the well. The average well depth for private homes is between 100 to 800 feet [2]. You may need a deeper or shallower well if your area has different geology than another region of the country.

How deep can a 1/2 HP well pump go?

A two-line jet pump can typically raise water from depths of 30 feet to 80 feet, and at water delivery rates of 4 gpm (for a 1/2 hp 2-line jet pump serving an 80 foot deep well) to 16 gpm (for a 1 hp 2-line jet pump serving a 30 foot deep well).

When would you use a foot valve?

Use foot valves when you have situations that need a pump, such as when water needs to be extracted from an underground well. Foot valves keep the pump primed, allowing water to flow in, but not letting it flow back out, making them ideal for use in pools, ponds, and wells.

Does a well need a check valve?

A Check Valve Is Required For A Water Well. It's important to understand the components that make up your homes water system in order to maintain it and keep clean fresh water flowing safely into your home.

Does a check valve go before or after a pump?

Generally, the first outlet of the pump is the soft connection (shock absorber), the next is the check valve, and then the block valve. Advantages: it can protect the check valve, especially in parallel pumps.

Will a check valve prevent siphoning?

Check valves allow one directional water flow and are used to prevent back siphoning. They are commonly used on return pump outputs to prevent water overflowing the sump in the event of a power outage, pump failure or maintenance.

Which way should a check valve be installed?

Check valve can be installed in horizontal or vertical piping runs, with the flow running upward. Mounting for vertical installations is critical.

Can you bury a check valve?

Yes, check valves require periodic inspections and maintenance. For this reason, NFPA 13 warns against burying check valves or positioning them in areas where they will be inaccessible.

How deep is a foot valve?

Cit. Excerpt: Foot Valve installations are sometimes overlooked and misunderstood. Most important, the foot valve shall be installed a maximum of 25 feet vertical distance below the suction pipe of the pump inlet.

Do you need a check valve with a foot valve?

We recommend using only one check valve or foot valve in a pump system. A foot valve should be at the inlet to the suction line of turbine, centrifugal, and jet pumps. A check valve should be placed as close as possible to the discharge of a submersible pump.

Is 5 gallons per minute good well?

5 gpm (two fixtures running simultaneously at 2.5 gpm) is a good estimate of peak demand, for the typical household. Water wells that reliably yield 5 gpm should be able to meet peak and daily needs for most residences. Wells yielding less than 5 gpm, however, are sometimes the only water source available.
