How does a towel rail radiator work?

How does a heated towel rail work? Hydronic (Standard) heated towel rails are simply plumbed into your central heating system and work by being heated up as hot water is circulated through them. This is exactly how standard water circulating radiators operate in your home.

Do you open both valves on a towel radiator?

Open both fully anticlockwise. Should heat up then ,providing central heating is on.

What are the 2 valves on a towel radiator?

One valve accounts for the amount of hot water that enters the radiator. The other valve, referred to as the lockshield valve, balances the system by regulating how much heat the radiator gives off.

Can you adjust the temperature on a towel radiator?

The most common method for adjusting temperature will be to adjust the knob by turning clockwise to turn off - I.e. cool or anti clockwise to open and up the heat. Turning the knob could be difficult, and so pliers might be required.

Can you turn down the heat on a towel rail?

Sometimes, a heated towel rail can become a tad too warm, but you can always switch it off at the mains or turn it down slightly. However, if it is still hot to the touch then you might have to delve a little deeper in order to resolve the issue.

Are towel radiators expensive to run?

Electric heated towel rails are operated like any other electric heater, being turned on and off with the flick of a switch. These rails avoid the issue of having to switch on the rest of your central heating, however they can be expensive to run due to the power requirements of the heated element within.

Should radiator valves be fully open?

You should also fully open the TRVs (thermostatic radiator valves). Whilst thermostatic and wheel head valves can be opened and closed by hand, the lockshield valves require a dedicated tool or an adjustable spanner.

Which is the lockshield valve on a towel radiator?

A lockshield valve is the valve on a radiator that has a plastic cap covering but not connected to the adjusting spindle. If you turn the cap it doesn't adjust the valve. To adjust the valve you have to remove the cap and turn the spindle with pliers.

What do valves on bottom of towel rail do?

What do towel radiator valves do? The valves in a towel radiator control the flow of water through the pipes. This ensures your radiator heats up effectively and efficiently. They keep your towel radiator functioning and ensure that your bathroom is heated up when needed, and your towels are dry and ready to use.

Where is the bleed valve on my towel radiator?

Find the towel radiator bleed valve. It tends to be at the top of the towel rail but is sometimes at the back. The screws are generally hexagonal or square. Also, many of them have a slot across the front so you can use a slotted screwdriver if a radiator key isn't available.

Which valve is which on a heated towel rail?

What Type Of Valve Should I Use? There are two main types of heated towel rail valves. Straight valves should be used when the inlets are at the bottom of the towel rail and the pipes are protruding from the floor. Angled valves will be needed if the water needs to be diverted at a 90-degree angle.

Do heated towel rails stay on all the time?

Heated towel rails are designed to be left on all the time and there are no safety issues to consider if you decide you want to keep them running. A standard heated towel rail will typically come on and off in accordance with the main central heating system.

How do towel heaters work?

Electric towel rails are connected to your mains electrical supply and are powered by electricity rather than gas-powered hot water. This type of electric heated towel rail usually contains an electric element which, when switched on, heats up the liquid inside the rails.

How are heated towel rails connected?

At the centre of the system is a gas-powered boiler which heats up water and send it around your home via a network of copper pipes. Your radiators and heated towel rails are connected up to this pipe network and are heated up by hot water.

What is the difference between a lockshield and radiator valve?

The Lockshield valve restricts hot water flow to radiators to help balance the entire system as a whole. Other radiator valves can be used to help adjust the temperature of a radiator to help heat or cool a room.

What does turning a lockshield valve do?

A Lockshield valve is used to adjust how quickly a radiator takes before warming up – opening means more hot water flows through quicker whereas closing slows down the heating process, so things do not get too hot too fast.

How do lockshield valves work?

A lockshield valve is the valve on a radiator that is usually covered with a plastic cap. Lockshield valves need to be adjusted when balancing home radiators in individual rooms. A lockshield valve will balance out each radiator within your heating system, ensuring they all heat up at the same rate.

Why are there 2 valves on a radiator?

Each radiator will have two valves. One will control the amount of hot water that enters the radiator and the other will balance the system by controlling how much heat comes out of your radiator.

Do you bleed a radiator when it is on or off?

Turn off your heating. You can't bleed a radiator when the heating is on, as it may be too hot to touch. You could also get hot water spraying out of the radiator. Use your radiator key to turn the valve at the top of the radiator.

How do you know if a radiator valve is open or closed?

Check the radiator control valve: If a radiator is not getting hot: (steam or hot water) first see if the valve that controls it has been turned off. Try turning the valve counter-clockwise to see if it will open.

Do towel rails give off as much heat as a radiator?

A towel rail usually gives out less heat than a radiator, however, if it has been sized correctly, then it should still be able to make your bathroom a warm and cosy place. A towel rail might take less time to heat up than a radiator.

Do towel heaters use a lot of electricity?

Towel warmers are usually rather weedy and will not keep a room warm. If yours happens to be 1,000Watts, it will cost 11 pence per hour. Energy from electricity currently costs about four times as much as energy from gas. Your electric heater, tumble drier, and immersion heater will use much more.

Do towel rails have thermostats?

So, to circle back to our initial question, do electric towel rails have thermostats? Mostly, yes. Many towel rails come with some form of thermostatic control, offering more advanced and convenient heat management.
