How do you test for biliary obstruction?
Olivia House The following tests may be used to investigate a possible blocked bile duct:
- Abdominal ultrasound.
- Abdominal CT scan.
- Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)
- Percutaneous transhepatic cholangiogram (PTCA)
- Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP)
- Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)
How do you diagnose biliary obstruction?
If your blood test results suggest biliary obstruction, your doctor may confirm the diagnosis using:
- Ultrasound.
- Computed tomography.
- Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography.
- Percutaneous transhepatic cholangiogram.
- Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography.
How do you know if your bile duct is obstructed?
What are the symptoms of biliary obstruction?
- light-colored stools.
- dark urine.
- jaundice (yellowish eyes or skin)
- pain in the upper right side of the abdomen.
- nausea.
- vomiting.
- weight loss.
- itching.
What diagnostic test is used to identify the cause of biliary obstruction?
Endoscopic tests like EUS (endoscopic ultrasound) with needle aspiration and ERCP with cytology and biopsies can be further considered based on noninvasive testing results. ERCP can be both diagnostic or therapeutic in cases of biliary obstruction caused by gall stones.
What is the most common cause of biliary obstruction?
Overall, gallstones are the most common cause of biliary obstruction. Other causes of blockage within the ducts include malignancy, infection, and biliary cirrhosis. External compression of the ducts may occur secondary to inflammation (eg, pancreatitis) and malignancy.

Will a CT scan show blocked bile ducts?
CT scans can show the organs near the bile duct (especially the liver), as well as lymph nodes and distant organs where cancer might have spread to. A type of CT known as CT angiography can be used to look at the blood vessels around the bile ducts.
Will ultrasound show blocked bile ducts?
During an ultrasound, the doctor may be able to see the actual tumor. However, more often, the ultrasound will show that the small bile ducts have become larger. This is called a “dilation of ducts.” The small bile ducts are located behind a blockage of 1 of the larger bile ducts.
What is the difference between HIDA scan and MRCP?
Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography can be used to determine the cause and location of biliary obstruction but is limited in the detection of small stones and the evaluation of the biliary tract near the ampulla. HIDA is used to evaluate for cholecystitis, biliary obstruction, and bile leaks.
Will a HIDA scan show liver problems?
Overview. A hepatobiliary iminodiacetic acid (HIDA) scan is an imaging procedure used to diagnose problems of the liver, gallbladder and bile ducts.
How is biliary obstruction treated?
The goal of treatment is to relieve the blockage. Stones may be removed using an endoscope during an ERCP. In some cases, surgery is required to bypass the blockage. The gallbladder will usually be surgically removed if the blockage is caused by gallstones.
How long can you survive with a blocked bile duct?
After a period varying from four to six months, however, patients suffering from occlusion of the common bile duct usually deteriorate rapidly and die.
Can a blocked bile duct be fatal?
Potential complications of a bile duct obstruction are serious and can be life threatening. This includes infection, which can lead to sepsis, and dangerously high levels of bilirubin in the blood. Long-term bile duct blockages can lead to chronic liver disease, such as biliary cirrhosis.
What causes biliary duct blockage?
The blockage is most commonly caused by gallstones or sludge impacting the bile ducts. Autoimmune disease such as primary sclerosing cholangitis may affect the system. Other, less common causes of cholangitis include: A tumor.
Is biliary obstruction painful?
People with bile duct obstruction also often experience: itching. abdominal pain, usually in the upper right side. fever or night sweats.
What organs does a HIDA scan show?
A HIDA, or hepatobiliary, scan is a diagnostic test. It's used to capture images of the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, and small intestine to help diagnose medical conditions related to those organs. Bile is a substance that helps digest fat.
Which type of bilirubin indicates obstruction?
In obstructive jaundice (both intrahepatic cholestasis and extrahepatic obstruction) the serum bilirubin is principally conjugated. Conjugated bilirubin is water soluble and is excreted in the urine, giving it a dark colour (bilirubinuria).
How painful is a HIDA scan?
You may feel nothing at all from the needle, or you may feel a brief sting or pinch. Otherwise, a HIDA scan usually doesn't hurt. You may find it hard to stay still during the scan. Ask for a pillow or a blanket to get as comfortable as you can before the scan starts.
Why would a doctor order a HIDA scan?
Your doctor may order a HIDA scan to track the flow of bile from your liver to your small intestine, and also to evaluate your gallbladder. A HIDA scan can be used to diagnose several diseases and conditions, such as: Bile duct obstruction. Bile leakage.
Is HIDA scan more accurate than ultrasound?
They concluded, however, that a HIDA scan is superior to ultrasound in diagnosing cholecystitis, having higher sensitivity, specificity and accuracy than ultrasound.
Is HIDA scan better than CT scan?
HIDA scan had a greater sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy in diagnosing acute cholecystitis when compared to US and CT.
When should a HIDA scan be done?
Your provider may recommend a HIDA scan if you have any of the following symptoms: Severe abdominal pain, especially if the pain is on your right side: This may be caused by a sudden inflammation of your gallbladder called cholecystitis. This is the most common reason for needing a HIDA scan.
Which is better MRCP or ERCP?
ERCP and MRCP are used to diagnose problems with the bile and pancreatic ducts. ERCP is more invasive, but it can be used as a treatment for certain conditions. MRCP is noninvasive and is ideal if you're unable to get ERCP.
What is a biliary test?
A gallbladder scan is a specialized radiology procedure used to assess the function and structure of the gallbladder. This procedure may also be referred to as a liver-biliary scan because the liver often is examined as well due to its proximity and close functional relationship to the gallbladder.
What does an MRCP scan show?
Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) is a special type of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) exam that produces detailed images of the hepatobiliary and pancreatic systems, including the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, pancreas and pancreatic duct.
What blood tests show gallbladder problems?
Liver tests, which are blood tests that can show evidence of gallbladder disease. A check of the blood's amylase or lipase levels to look for inflammation of the pancreas. Amylase and lipase are enzymes (digestive chemicals) produced in the pancreas.
