How are jet fuels made?

Jet fuels are produced from crude oil using fractional distillation in refineries. This process involves gradually heating the crude oil. When the boiling point of a certain component – a “fraction” – of the crude oil is exceeded, it passes into the gas phase.

What is the main ingredient in jet fuel?

A blend of approximately 30% kerosene and 70% gasoline, it is known as wide-cut fuel. It has a very low freezing point of −60 °C (−76 °F), and a low flash point as well. It is primarily used in some military aircraft.

Can you make your own jet fuel?

There are several known biomass materials that could be utilized in the production of jet fuel. These include fats/oils, cellulose, woody biomass, and coal. One of the primary sources is vegetable oil (this also includes algae oil and fats from production of meats).

Why is kerosene used as jet fuel?

Aviation kerosene has a freezing point of -47 °C. Planes fly at extremely high altitudes, which means they spend a lot of airtime in sub-zero temperatures. As a result, planes need to use fuel with a low freezing point – like kerosene - so the fuel functions properly without solidifying during the flight.

How Aviation Fuel Differs From Regular Fuel

Can a diesel engine run on Jet-A?

There are still some big differences between diesel and Jet-A. For starters, there's a higher level of sulfur and other additives-including cetane, and the cetane number-in Jet-A than is allowed in your diesel. This could lead to fines and may even damage your engine.

What plant makes jet fuel?

Aviation biofuel can be produced from plant sources like Jatropha, algae, tallows, waste oils, palm oil, Babassu and Camelina (bio-SPK); from solid biomass using pyrolysis processed with a Fischer–Tropsch process (FT-SPK); with an alcohol-to-jet (ATJ) process from waste fermentation; or from synthetic biology through a ...

Can ethanol replace jet fuel?

“Ethanol can come from a variety of sustainable sources and as such is an increasingly important raw material for sustainable aviation fuel. This project shows great promise for alternate reactor technology which could have benefits for this key pathway to decarbonization of the aviation sector.”

What is alcohol-to-jet fuel?

The alcohol-to-jet (ATJ) process is a method for the conversion of alcohols to an alternative jet fuel blendstock based on catalytic steps historically utilized by the petroleum refining and petrochemical industry.

Is jet fuel and kerosene the same?

Jet fuel (Jet A-1, kerosene)

The fuel type is kerosene. Jet A-1 has a flash point higher than 38°C and a freezing point of -47°C. Jet A is a similar kerosene fuel type that is normally available only in the U.S. After refining, aviation fuel is mixed with extremely small amounts of several additives.

How do airports get jet fuel?

Generally, fuel is supplied to airports through a combination of interstate multiproduct pipelines, third-party and off-airport terminals, and dedicated local pipelines.

Is jet fuel and diesel the same?

There are some major differences between Jet-A and diesel: 1. Jet-A is a relatively high sulfur fuel, diesel is low sulfur and EPA requirements are getting more stringent about sulfur in diesel every year. After all, we are now in the Ultra-Low Sulfur diesel era.

Is jet fuel made from diesel?

Jet-A, the most common type of jet fuel, is made from kerosene and is similar to diesel fuel. Avgas is similar to what you use in your car, but it's not intended for that use.

What would happen if you put jet fuel in your car?

Will jet fuel cause your vehicle to explode? Again, the answer is no. While kerosene can certainly be a hazardous material, there is no danger that your vehicle will catch fire if its gas tank is filled with jet fuel. However, it will stall out, and it can do severe and costly damage to your engine.

Can jet fuel be made from corn?

Corn-based jet fuel is a focus of Gevo, a Colorado-based renewable fuels company. "We will be proving and improving the process as we're running the plant in Luverne," Phil Cherry, the Gevo plant manager at Luverne, which is no longer making ethanol.

What is green jet fuel?

SAF stands for sustainable aviation fuel. It's produced from sustainable feedstocks and is very similar in its chemistry to traditional fossil jet fuel. Using SAF results in a reduction in carbon emissions compared to the traditional jet fuel it replaces over the lifecycle of the fuel.

What can be used as jet fuel?

Jet fuel is a clear to straw-colored fuel, based on either an unleaded kerosene (Jet A-1), or a naphtha-kerosene blend (Jet B). Similar to diesel fuel, it can be used in either compression ignition engines or turbine engines.

Can you put jet fuel in a car?

Jet fuel can actually be used in cars, but only in diesel engines. Kerosene jet fuel and diesel are actually similar enough to allow for cross-functionality and would provide a similar performance. Although, I wouldn't recommend running a jet on diesel.

What octane is jet fuel?

The octane ratings of AVGAS, a gasoline-based fuel, are usually either 91 or 100 (lean mixture) and 96 or 130 (rich mixture). The octane rating of jet fuel is much lower, around 15 – this is much more like automotive diesel and thus much more resistant to detonating due to sparks or compression.

What temperature does jet fuel freeze?

Jet fuel freezes at around -40 degrees Fahrenheit, but it will work just fine as long as it's kept above that temperature on the ground.

Does jet fuel expire?

Jet fuel that has been properly manufactured, stored, and handled should remain stable for at least one year.

What is the price of a gallon of jet fuel?

Jet A Fuel

As of April 15, 2021, Jet Fuel A was priced at an average of $4.81 per gallon in the United States. If you multiply that by the typical tank size of a commercial aircraft (3,500 gallons), filling up your plane with Jet A fuel may cost you somewhere around $16,835 in total.
