What happens when turbo seals fail?

If the seals between the compressor and the engine become worn or cracked, oil will leak into the exhaust system. As a result, the turbo has to work harder to increase air pressure. This problem is also known as over-speeding. Ultimately, it will reduce the efficiency and the boost delivered by the turbo.

How do I know if my turbo seals are blown?

The most common signals that you may have a blown turbo are:

1. The car has noticeable power loss.
2. The acceleration of the car seems slow and noisy.
3. The car doesn't easily maintain high speeds.
4. There is smoke coming from the exhaust.
5. There is an engine fault light on the dashboard.

How do I know if my turbo seals are gone?

A smoking exhaust – If the turbo housing has cracked, or the internal seals have blown, oil will start to leak into your exhaust system. As this burns off, it produces a distinctive blue/grey smoke, which will probably become more apparent as the engine revs increase just following an idle situation.

What causes turbo seals to fail?

More than 90% of turbocharger failures are caused oil related either by oil starvation or oil contamination. Blocked or leaking pipes or lack of priming on fitting usually causes oil starvation. There are many types of contamination which may be carried by the engine oil into the turbo bearing system and cause damage.

How to test a turbo for leaking oil seals

What causes a turbo to Underboost?

Typically, this code is the result of an air restriction or leak in the intake of your engine. Another common cause is a binding turbocharger or simply a faulty pressure sensor.

At what RPM is turbo activated?

From 1-2,400 rpm, the primary turbocharger is activated; at 2,400-2,800 rpm, the second turbocharger is activated; and beyond 2,800 rpm, both turbochargers function. This system is recommended for diesel engines with displacements of 2.0 liters and above, and V engines.

What happens when a diesel turbo fails?

Be aware that when your turbo fails the pieces will drop down into the intercooler and the oil seals will fail. Unfortunately the engine can actually run on this oil and can run away at maximum RPM until all the oil is used up, at which point the engine will seize.

What's a car turbo?

A turbocharged engine uses a turbine that's powered by the engine's exhaust gas to subsequently force that extra compressed air into the combustion chamber. A supercharged engine, on the other hand, uses a mechanically-driven process. This type of charger is usually powered by a belt attached to a crankshaft.

What does boost leak sound like?

Listen for any hissing noise—this will indicate a boost leak. If the air pressure gauge indicates no buildup of pressure or does not hold for less than a second, that's a sure sign that a major leak exists within the engine.

Should there be oil in turbo pipe?

a little oil in pipes is normal. a lot indicates excessive breathing as said, or more likely leaking turbo seals on the compressor side, hence the play in the shaft.

Will a bad turbo throw a code?

It implies that the turbo has excessively low output. There are several different factors that can spark the appearance of the P0299 code and some of them include: faulty turbo, defect in the EGR system, air or intake leak or restriction, low oil pressure in the engine, and defective boost pressure sensor etc.

What is normal turbo boost pressure?

There's a wide variation, but back in the '90's it was clustered in the 10-12psi range for a typical 4-cyl turbocharged performance model. Nowadays 16-18psi is not abnormal for high performance factory cars.

Can turbo seals cause Blowby?

Pressure from the compressor side of the turbo was leaking through the turbo shaft seal, down the turbo oil return tube into the crankcase, causing a lot of blowby from the breather tube..

Can turbo oil seals be replaced?

If oil is found to be leaking from a turbo, firstly it is more complex to diagnose correctly and secondly there is no possibility to just change a seal, like on a crankshaft. Changing the turbo may not cure the problem, as the oil leak is very often just a symptom of some other problem on the vehicle.

Can turbo seals be replaced?

unfortunately the seals are non serviceable. you have a few options. you can find a replacement turbo, you can replace the center bearing assembly on your existing turbo, upgrade to a bigger turbo, or you can send it to blouch and they will re-manufacturer your turbo to their specs.

What causes a turbo to whistle?

What causes turbo whistle? Turbo whistle is the sound of the compressor inside the turbocharger speeding up (also known as 'spooling up', which is why it kicks in at the boost threshold (when the turbo starts to kick in) as you accelerate up the rev range.

Can a turbo engine run without the turbo?

The vehicle can run without an efficiently functioning turbocharger, but it will perform poorly, and your decision could possibly have dramatic repercussions. If the issue is an oil supply or internal component-related problem, complete failure is imminent.

Can you rebuild a turbo with shaft play?

It can, but...

If there's a lot of shaft play, chances are either the turbine wheel or compressor wheel already hit the housing and have been ruined.
