How do I reduce the heat in my turbo?
John Johnson How do I lower the temperature on my turbo?
Fit a larger air intake – increasing the amount of air available to your turbo. Replace your air filter – to ensure that it is clean and free flowing. Fit a water or methanol injection system – which can be used to cool either the intake air, or the charged air.
What causes a turbo to run hot?
Turbo chargers get hot because hot exhaust gases flow through the manifold then the turbo. So when the turbo is red hot, the manifold also glows with red heat. The temperature of the exhaust gas in diesel engines varies by manufacturer.
Is it normal for a turbo to get hot?
Totally normal for the turbo to get steaming hot after any amount of driving at temperature. In fact, it's pretty normal for the engine bay to be very hot in general. Increasing the amount of power while decreasing displacement causes the heat density to increase, exacerbating the issue.
Do turbo engines need to cool down?
Turbocharged engines do need to cool down before they are turned off. But in nearly all driving conditions, the engine does not reach temperatures that require a deliberate cooling down period.

How long do you cool down turbo?
Idling the engine cools the turbo because it circulates the oil, yet does not make the turbo "work." The amount of cooling it needs is directly related to the way you just finished driving it. When you drive it gently around town, 15 seconds should be more than adequate.
What should you not do with a turbo engine?
- 5 Things You Shouldn't Do In A Turbocharged Vehicle. ...
- Don't Run Your Car Immediately. ...
- Don't Switch Off Immediately. ...
- Don't Lug Your Engine. ...
- Octane Fuel - Don't Use Lower Than Recommended. ...
- If you have a laggy turbo - don't mash the throttle.
How do you know if your turbo is overheating?
Signs of overheating:
- Discolouration at the hot end of the turbine wheel, spreading along journal bearing area.
- “Heat soak” from the turbine side of the turbocharger through to the compressor side, causing discolouration to the turbine shaft and bearing housing.
How hot should a turbo run?
The max you really want to see on a pyrometer in the exhaust stream coming from the engine to the turbo is around 1200°F. So, set that as a minimum standard for your paint.
What happens when turbo overheats?
Transition from the body heat of the exhaust turbocharger to the central body causes burning of oil and corrosion of turbocharger bearings. The main damage occurs on the ring and grooves of the turbine shaft and the bearing of the turbine.
What is a hot turbo?
Heat. Turbochargers are fed by exhaust gases from the engine and therefore they rely on the velocity of the gasses to spool up properly. As exhaust gas temperature reduces, the velocity reduces due to a lack of pressure, which reduces the rate of the turbocharger spooling up.
How hot does a diesel turbo get?
A turbocharger turbine lives in a terribly hostile environment. The turbine is driven by exhaust gasses that can exceed 1875°F (1025°C) and which are very corrosive.
What can causes high exhaust temperatures in diesel engines?
Fouling of the turbine side of the turbocharger is a common cause for high exhaust gas temperatures. The sequence of events is often as follows: → Fouling of turbine (coke deposit) → Bad turbocharger performance → Lower airflow and charge air pressure → Higher exhaust gas temperatures.
Do turbos make engines run hotter?
Does A Turbo Make The Engine Hotter? You can, however, expect the turbocharger to run at normal speeds. In theory, your engine should warm up, but really chill down if at all possible. An increased volume of airflow and an increased efficiency in the exhaust are the main reasons for this.
Is it normal for a turbo to glow red?
In summary, yes, it is absolutely normal for a turbocharger to glow red during normal operation. Glowing can occur with minimal drive time at a normal engine-load. The OEM's have recognized the heat that the turbo will hold and have appropriately supplied heat shields to manage that heat.
What does a failing turbo sound like?
Loud noises: If your vehicle has a bad turbo, you may hear loud noises that sound like whining or screeching. So if your vehicle is running and you hear a loud whining sound that increases in volume as the problem goes unfixed, this is most likely to do a turbo problem.
Can you daily a turbo car?
Yes, it is totally fine to daily drive a turbo car. In fact, turbocharging – at least from the perspective of many manufacturers – is more about making daily driving easier for the driver by making cars more powerful, more fuel efficient and easier to drive.
Is synthetic oil better for turbocharged engines?
"With its superior resistance to deterioration, AAA's findings indicate that synthetic oil is particularly beneficial to newer vehicles with turbocharged engines and for vehicles that frequently drive in stop-and-go traffic, tow heavy loads or operate in extreme hot or cold conditions."
At what RPM does turbo kick in?
While your car's engine revs, at cruise, at around 2,000 rpm, a turbo's turbine can reach rotational speeds of more than 280,000 rpm.
Do turbos shorten engine life?
Turbochargers, Supercharges, and Nitrous all create higher cylinder pressures. This DOES reduce engine life ... PERIOD. Turbos and Superchargers make more heat, and heat reduces an engine's life ...
How hot is too hot for diesel exhaust?
How Hot Is Too Hot? Based on our own experience in the sled pulling and drag racing world, we can definitely say that any engine running at 1,800 to 2,000 degrees EGT for more than a second or two should be rebuilt every season and may incur turbocharger, cylinder head, or piston damage during the season.
What causes hot exhaust?
If the exhaust system is dealing with any constrictions, it will cause the temperatures to rise. Additionally, the harder the engine has to work to produce power, the hotter the gases become. If the engine is overheating for any reason, the gases could exceed normal operating temperatures.
What is the hot side of a turbo?
When talking about a turbo, the hot side is the turbine side, and the cold side is the compressor side.
What does turbo hot shutdown mean?
1) Hot turbo shutdowns – If the operator doesn't idle the engine prior to shutting the machine down, it can cause serious damage to the turbocharger over time. Prolonged misuse can even result in turbocharger failures.
