How deep can nuclear subs go?

A nuclear submarine can dive to a depth of about 300m. This one is larger than the research vessel Atlantis and has a crew of 134. The average depth of the Caribbean Sea is 2,200 meters, or about 1.3 miles. The average depth of the world's oceans is 3,790 meters, or 12,400 feet, or 2 ¹⁄₃ miles.

What's the deepest a Navy submarine has gone?

Trieste is a Swiss-designed, Italian-built deep-diving research bathyscaphe which reached a record depth of about 10,911 metres (35,797 ft) in the Challenger Deep of the Mariana Trench near Guam in the Pacific.

How deep can a ww2 sub go?

World War II German U-boats of the types VII and IX generally imploded at depths of 200 to 280 metres (660 to 920 feet).

What happens if a submarine goes too deep?

The name is foreboding and fairly self-explanatory; it's when the submarine goes so deep the water pressure crushes it, causing an implosion. The crush depth of most submarines is classified, but it's likely to be more than 400 metres.

How Deep Can A Submarine Go?

How thick is a submarine hull?

Making the hull. 4 Steel plates, approximately 2-3 in (5.1-7.6 cm) thick, are obtained from steel manufacturers.

Can a submarine go to the bottom of the Mariana Trench?

The dive to the ocean's deepest point turned up some surprises. The news: During a four-hour exploration of the Mariana Trench, retired naval officer Victor Vescovo piloted his submarine to 10,927 meters (35,849 feet) below the sea's surface, making it the deepest dive on record. He spent four hours at the bottom.

How long can a submarine stay submerged?

The limits on how long they can stay underwater are food and supplies. Submarines generally stock a 90-day supply of food, so they can spend three months underwater. The diesel-powered submarines (not now used by the United States Navy) had a limit of several days submerged.

How deep can you go in the ocean without dying?

For most swimmers, a depth of 20 feet (6.09 metres) is the most they will free dive. Experienced divers can safely dive to a depth of 40 feet (12.19 metres) when exploring underwater reefs.

Can a submarine survive a hurricane?

Many former submarine sailors remember crossing the storm. At an appropriate depth the boat was completely stable and the crew couldn't even tell that there is a storm happening above. That is one great advantage of serving in a submarine. However, if absolutely necessary, big ships can also cross most of the storms.

Do submarines hit whales?

Most subs have two types of sonar: active and passive. Active sonar sends out acoustic sounds, or “pings,” which can reach thousands of yards. If the ping bounces back, that means it hit an object—like a whale, a ship, or another submarine.

Can you fart while diving?

Farting is possible while scuba diving but not advisable because: Diving wetsuits are very expensive and the explosive force of an underwater fart will rip a hole in your wetsuit. An underwater fart will shoot you up to the surface like a missile which can cause decompression sickness.

Can a human survive Challenger Deep?

Scientists haven't yet determined a hard limit for how deep we can survive underwater. There have been a few instances of divers surviving ridiculous depths (not without side effects) but most professional free divers don't go past 400 feet deep.

How deep do oil rig divers go?

Offshore, inland and coastal commercial divers now work in conventional surface air supplied helmet gear to depths of 180 to 200 feet. Scuba diving is permitted by OSHA regulations to those depths under limited conditions. From 200 to 300 feet, diving rigs using helium and oxygen as a breathing medium are used.

Can a submarine survive a nuclear bomb?

Submarines are also designed to withstand short pressure spikes from close explosions of deep charges and even nuclear explosions.

How long can a submarine go without refueling?

Nuclear power allowed submarines to run for about twenty years without needing to refuel. Food supplies became the only limit on a nuclear submarine's time at sea. Since then, similar technologies have been developed to power aircraft carriers.

Can a submarine touch the ocean floor?

Even since the early days of the nuclear sub program – dating back to Admiral Hyman Rickover himself – these submarines have been able to touch the bottom of the ocean, so long as that bottom wasn't below their crush depths.

How do submarines not get crushed?

Now, a submarine is basically a metal container filled with air, and there is just enough air in a submarine to exert the atmospheric pressure at sea level. If the submarine goes underwater, the amount of air within it does not change (unless there is a leak, of course), so the pressure within the sub remains the same.

How are submarines watertight?

The hull of a standard ship is the metal outside that keeps the water out. Most submarines have two hulls, one inside the other, to help them survive. The outer hull is waterproof, while the inner one (called the pressure hull) is much stronger and resistant to immense water pressure.

Can a submarine surface through ice?

Also, while some submarines in the Arctic have features to help surface through the ice, they still cannot surface through ice that is greater than three meters (nine feet) thick. Submarines that are not ice-strengthened can only surface through ice that is less than one meter (three feet) thick.

Is a submarine pressurized?

Pressure increases by 1 atmosphere every 10 meters. So, yes---that submarine at 300 meters has a pressure on the hull of 31 atmospheres. Because the internal and external forces are not equal (but the surface areas are), there is a much greater force pushing on the outside of the hull than the inside.

Can you get the bends in a submarine?

A sub is a solid chamber. It doesn't compress under the pressure of the sea, and thus the air breathed inside is at ~1ATM. If it were a submarine balloon, people would get bent (and crushed).
