How do you make a good parachute for an egg drop?

Make a parachute to test out of a plastic garbage bag. Use scissors to cut a square out of the bag. Cut four equal lengths of string. Tie a piece of string to each corner of the garbage bag square, then attach the four loose ends of the strings to the cup.

Do parachutes work for egg drops?

Gravity and Air Resistance Explained

A egg dropped without anything to slow it down will fall fast and break, the parachute and balloon add air resistance slowing the fall, and stopping the egg from breaking. We also found that the parachute fell much more slowly than the balloon.

How can an egg survive a 100 foot drop?

There are three basic ways to increase the likelihood of safely dropping an egg:

1. Slow down the descent speed. ...
2. Cushion the egg so that something other than the egg itself absorbs the impact of landing. ...
3. Orient the egg so that it lands on the strongest part of the shell.

What are the best materials for an egg drop?

Materials

• Raw egg, or other payload that needs protecting.
• Container, like a cardboard tube, cup, box, etc.
• External protection materials, like balloons, rubber bands, craft sticks, straws, etc.
• Internal padding, like fabric, packing materials, paper, etc.
• Pen or pencil.
• Paper.
• Tape.
• Scissors.

What makes an egg drop successful?

Ensure that you have enough padding in the box to cover the egg evenly on all sides. When the box hits the ground, the force will cause the box to crush, which absorbs much of the shock of the fall. The force is also evenly distributed throughout and absorbed by the cushioning material.

How do you protect eggs from a rocket?

You should attach the nose cone to the rest of the rocket with string so it does not fall far away. This string may be used to help pull the parachute out of the sleeve. The egg can be taped inside the sleeve along with some additional padding to help that last bump when it hits the ground.

Which side of the egg is stronger?

The egg is strongest at the top and the bottom (or at the highest point of the arch), which is why it does not break when pressure is added to both ends. The curved form of the shell also distributes pressure evenly all over the shell rather than concentrating it at any one point.

How do straws protect eggs?

Place a jumbo straw next to a small straw piece and wrap a piece of tape around it (I recommend using 2 to 3 pieces of tape per straw). Once that's done, the pyramid should now look like it has "spikes" protruding from it. Make sure that the egg can still fit in there.

How big should a parachute be?

RECOMMENDED PARACHUTE SIZES

Rockets 12″ to 18″ tall – use a 12″ chute. Rockets 18″ to 24″ tall – use a 12″ or 18″ chute. Rockets 24″ and taller – use a 18″ or 24″ chute.

Can a parachute be too big?

The risk is with too big a parachute, it may get carried off by the wind, so you want the smallest chute that's still effective at preventing damage to the rocket.

What parachute design will slow the descent of a falling egg the most?

The largest parachute created more resistance and slowed the descent of the egg the most. The experiment shows that the size of the parachute makes a difference in the speed of descent, but what if you tried different materials for the parachute?

Does the size of a parachute affect how fast it falls?

4. The size of the parachute affects the speed of falling because a larger parachute allows it to displace more air, causing it to fall more slowly.

What is the best shape for a parachute?

The circle parachute should demonstrate the slowest average descent rate because its natural symmetrical shape would be the most efficient design to maximize wind resistance and create drag.

What is the best material for a homemade parachute?

Nylon has since become a popular choice, as it has excellent wind resistance, good elasticity, mildew resistance, and is comparatively cheaper. The material is also lightweight and dries quickly. It is resistant to abrasion and chemicals.

Why wont my egg break when I squeeze it?

The real strength of an egg lies in its shape. A side on blow from a sharp object puts pressure across the thin shell and easily breaks it. But squeezing directs pressure into the egg so that it compresses along, not across the shell.

Can you crush an egg from top to bottom?

Eggs are similar in shape to a 3-dimensional arch, one of the strongest architectural forms. The egg is strongest at the top and the bottom (or at the highest point of the arch). That's why the egg doesn't break when you add pressure to both ends.

Is it possible to break an egg in your palm?

Nothing. See, an egg shell is thin, so when we crack an egg for breakfast by applying force to a small area, it causes direct strain on a small area, which breaks. But, in your palm, the force is distributed evenly over the shell, and the shell absorbs it.

How do you carry eggs without breaking them?

Put them in boxes, each one wrapped in a piece of old newspaper. Put them in baskets, each one nestled in straw or dried grass. Put them in boxes full of plastic packing “peanuts.” Wrap each one in tissue paper and tie an inexpensive raffia bow around it.

How much force can an egg withstand?

Testing by SPS found a wide range of maximum loads from ~100 lb to some as high as +300 lbs for standard, large eggs. Explain to the audience that the reason the egg can withstand such forces is because the foam decreases the pressure the egg experiences.

What is the best shock absorber for dropping an egg?

Foam from an old cushion, cotton balls, cotton batting, stuffing, bubble wrap, old rags, toilet paper or paper towels can be used for the first, dense cushioning layer closest to the egg. Experiment with various materials and thicknesses.

Why do bigger parachutes fall slower?

How large a parachute is (in other words, the parachute's surface area) affects its air resistance, or drag force. The larger the parachute, the greater the drag force. In the case of these parachutes, the drag force is opposite to the force of gravity, so the drag force slows the parachutes down as they fall.

Does the length of string affect a parachute?

We observed that the longer the strings,, the bigger the surface area of the parachute. Since the surface area was larger for the 45cm strings this causes more air resistance which means a longer hangtime.

What makes a good parachute?

The larger the object, the greater its air resistance. Parachutes use a large canopy to increase air resistance. This gives a slow fall and a soft landing.
