Should I turn off image stabilization?

Image stabilization is only important if you shoot in low light situations where you need slower shutter speeds. Image stabilisation isn't for you if you often shoot at 1/500th of a second in lots of light or are mostly on a tripod. You can turn it off in the menu system and save a bit of cash by buying non-IS lenses.

How important is built in image stabilization?

The advantage of image stabilization is that it allows you to capture sharper images of stationary objects at shutter speeds slower than you could without it. Lens manufacturers rate their image stabilization by how many stops slower you can shoot using the image stabilization.

Do you need image stabilization in a mirrorless camera?

When mirrorless electronic viewfinder technology is used, lens-based stabilization just does not make much sense anymore. Small compact lenses such as Nikon 1 10mm f/2.8 pancake will never feature image stabilization, so other cameras with in-camera IS have an advantage when using such lenses.

Can I use a tripod as a stabilizer?

Another option is to use your tripod like a monopod. Just squeeze the legs together and hold them close with one hand extended as you record your scene. It's not perfect but it will appear more stabilized than if you just carried the camera around with no weight attached.

Does image stabilization reduce sharpness?

This is totally false. Image stabilization only allows you the ability to capture sharp images of static subjects at slower speeds. Moving objects will be equally blurry or streaky—and in some cases blurrier or shakier with the IS turned on.

Is Digital image stabilization good?

With digital image stabilization for video, the camera is not trying to sharpen blurry detail – it's checking each frame in the sequence and shifting them minutely (or bigly, with really shaky footage) so that they line up. All those frame-by-frame jitters even out surprisingly well.

Do you need image stabilization for macro photography?

For macro work you don't need image stabilization because IS just isn't that good at high magnification. For close-ups and regular portrait distances IS is a great thing to have.

Do gimbals help with still photography?

Gimbals are great for shooting stills too from awkward angles and they are generally considered essential pieces of kit for videographers.
