Why is cold air good for turbos?

Replace your intercooler with a more efficient model – reducing charged air temperatures and improving overall performance. Fit a cold air intake to your engine – meaning that colder, denser air is brought into the turbocharger. Fit a larger air intake – increasing the amount of air available to your turbo.

Do turbocharged engines need to warm up?

Cool down

Just as you need to warm up your engine, you need to let it cool down. Extended journeys and high speed driving creates a lot of heat in your turbocharger, and if you turn off the engine whilst it's still hot, you can cook the oil inside, leading to unnecessary build up of carbonised oil inside your turbo.

What temperature does a turbo run at?

Toasty Turbines: Turbos operate in extreme heat, in excess of 1050 °C in gasoline engines. Even in diesel engines they run hotter than the temperature of molten lava.

Do engines perform better in cold weather?

Now, cold air is denser than warm air, so in cold weather the number oxygen molecules entering the combustion chamber per unit volume of air is significantly greater than when the temperature is high. More oxygen provides better combustion, and hence a noticeable increase in power.

I Blew My Turbo (a.k.a. Dos and Don'ts in Cold Weather)

Why you shouldn't warm your car up?

By letting your car sit to warm up, it's actually putting extra fuel into the combustion chamber, which can get onto your cylinder walls. Because gasoline is an excellent solvent, too much on your cylinder walls can dissolve the oil that lubricates your cylinders, leading to shorter life on crucial components.

How cold is too cold for an engine?

Cold weather puts the battery at risk.

Anything lower than 32 degrees can cause issues for your engine in terms of performance.

Can you daily a turbo car?

Yes, it is totally fine to daily drive a turbo car. In fact, turbocharging – at least from the perspective of many manufacturers – is more about making daily driving easier for the driver by making cars more powerful, more fuel efficient and easier to drive.

How many miles will a turbo last?

Turbos are designed to last the lifetime of the vehicle (or around 150,000 miles); however, it's possible for them to wear out over time depending on how hard you drive the car and the original build quality of the turbo.

Should you let your turbo cool down?

Turbocharged engines do need to cool down before they are turned off. But in nearly all driving conditions, the engine does not reach temperatures that require a deliberate cooling down period.

How much HP does a cold air intake add to a turbo?

How much HP will I gain from a cold air intake? The amount of horsepower you'll gain depends on a lot of factors, but the best-case scenario is a 5% power increase with better throttle response. Most setups will not bring anything in terms of power and are better suited to improving the sound of the engine.

How long should you let a turbo cool down?

Idling the engine cools the turbo because it circulates the oil, yet does not make the turbo "work." The amount of cooling it needs is directly related to the way you just finished driving it. When you drive it gently around town, 15 seconds should be more than adequate.

Do turbos get hot fast?

A turbo can run very hot indeed so that doesn't surprise me. Most modern turbo charged cars run the oil through the turbo for a few minutes even after turning the engine off for this very reason.

How do I keep my turbo healthy?

How often do Turbos need to be replaced?

However, turbochargers are wearable parts and they will wear down over time. Most turbochargers need to be replaced between 100,000 and 150,000 miles. If you are good at maintaining your car and get timely oil changes your turbocharger may last even longer than that.

Do turbocharged engines need more frequent oil changes?

Turbocharged engines will require more frequent oil changes and fresh spark plugs, though turbo engines typically don't require additional service compared to naturally aspirated engines.

What fuel is best for turbo cars?

Engines with high compression ratios or turbochargers often require high octane fuel found in premium gas for optimal performance and fuel efficiency. However, the majority of cars on the road today are optimized to run on regular gas.

Will a turbo increase mpg?

A turbocharger typically helps a car get better gas mileage because a smaller engine can be used to get the same amount of performance. Expect a turbocharged engine to be about 8% -10% more fuel efficient that the same engine that is not turbo equipped.

Do cars run worse in the cold?

Engine and transmission friction increases in cold temperatures due to cold engine oil and other drive-line fluids. It takes longer for your engine to reach its most fuel-efficient temperature. This affects shorter trips more, since your car spends more of your trip at less-than-optimal temperatures.

How long should I warm up my car in extreme cold?

The practice of warming up your vehicle in these cold weather conditions varies from person to person. To some, 20 minutes seems excessive. To others, five minutes isn't enough. But, according to experts, for a newer model vehicle with the proper winter oil, 30 seconds may be all you need.

Should you start your car in cold weather every few hours?

Experts at AAA, a federation of motor clubs, say it's not a good idea to warm your car up to keep it from freezing. Drivers should start their engine and allow it to idle only for the time it takes you to fasten your seat belt. This time ensures lubricating oil gets to all of the engine's vital parts.
