Is it OK to put car tires on a trailer?

Never use passenger tires on a trailer. They are usually rated Load Range B, a 4-ply equivalent, because their sidewalls are flexible for a smooth ride—far too flexible for trailer duty. They are not engineered to stabilize heavy loads or to handle the temperatures that build with them.

Are boat trailer tires different from car tires?

A tire made for a boat trailer is going to have "ST" on the sidewall, or the words "Trailer Use Only." Unlike tires on your car, trailer tires have strengthened sidewalls to handle the weight of a boat, especially when rounding corners. Trailer tires are either bias ply or radial.

Do you have to use trailer tires on a boat trailer?

Your Trailer Needs a Certain Type

Special Trailer (ST) tires are the only type you should use on your boat trailer unless you're willing to risk damage or potentially an accident. ST tires have robust sidewalls to handle lots of weight, which helps avoid tipping your boat onto the road while cornering turns.

Can I use truck tires on my trailer?

Expert Reply: Light truck tires (LT) are sometimes used in RV applications but generally not on utility trailers. Light truck tires are a type of passenger vehicle tire and as such they are not built with as thick of a sidewall as trailer tires. A thicker sidewall allows a trailer tire to handle more vertical load.

The Truth About Boat Trailer Tires (Boat Trailer Tires 101)

Do boat trailer tires need to be balanced?

Since the primary duty of a trailer tire is supporting a vertical load, rather than gripping an automobile through turns, trailer tires do not have to be dynamically balanced like passenger car tires do. Steering and cornering are less of a concern on a trailer tire than they are on an automotive tire.

How long should boat trailer tires last?

According to rubber industry research, trailer tires need to be replaced after 3–5 years of use, even though they usually appear to have plenty of tread left.

Are Bigger tires better for trailers?

Larger tires will typically have a higher weight rating. Tires with a higher weight rating will not increase the load carrying capacity of the trailer, so you will still be limited to the weight capacity of the axle.

Why does my boat trailer bounce?

Any trailer hauled without its load will bounce. Boat trailers, for example, are made with stiff, solid axles with loose springs, which causes them to jump a lot when not weighed down. If your trailer still bounces while loaded, there could be other issues that need attention: Your tires aren't properly inflated.

Why are my boat trailer tires wearing on the inside?

Tire wear on the inside generally indicates an overloaded trailer. If you have not been carrying heavy loads, check to see if the axle has been flipped. If it has, that would be why the tires are wearing. An axle has a bow in it that should be curved up.

Can you tow with off road tires?

You need the best all-terrain tires for towing if you plan on going off-road. These aggressive tires feature wide and deep tread grooves that grip the dirt. They also work well in the mud and on the sand, and the extra traction keeps you from getting stuck.

Are car tires better than trailer tires?

Vehicle tires keep traction and grip in mind during their construction, while trailer tires do not. This increases the risk significantly, especially at highway speeds or in poor weather. We don't recommend using a trailer tire on your vehicle.

Should I inflate my trailer tires to max psi?

When it comes to trailer tires you always want to have them inflated to their max psi when cold. Not only do you get the full capacity at the max psi, you also will generate less heat in the tire since there won't be as much flex in the sidewall, you'll get better wear and better fuel mileage.

Why do my trailer tires keep blowing out?

A lot of trailer tire blowouts are a result of heat build up that causes the tire to fail. There are several things that can cause too much heat to build up but the main two most likely suspects are overloading the trailer and/or under inflated tires.

What PSI should boat trailer tires be?

Boat-trailer tires require a lot of air pressure — in most cases, between 50 and 65 psi. In fact, the correct tire pressure for your boat trailer is almost always the maximum-rated pressure for that tire, which is molded right on the sidewall. Maintaining that trailer tire PSI is critically important to towing safety.

Will car rims fit on a trailer?

Technically if the bolt pattern and weight ratings are compatible with your vehicle then you can fit trailer wheels on a car but the biggest problem you are going to have is proper tire placement.

Should trailer tires be rotated?

Trailers, just like vehicles, need their tires rotated too. To avoid mechanical problems both minor and major, it is recommended that you rotate your trailer tires.

How often should trailer tires be replaced?

Generally trailer tires should be replaced every 5 to 6 years regardless of mileage and use. This "clock" can be started once the tires are mounted to your trailer, assuming they were stored in a controlled environment between the manufacturer date and the day they were mounted.

Should you run boat trailer tires at the max psi?

Trailer tires should always be inflated to the maximum psi as indicated on the tire regardless of the load on the trailer. The reason for this is because of how trailer tires are constructed. Trailer tires are made with a thicker sidewall than passenger vehicle tires to handle more vertical load.

What is the difference between D and R trailer tires?

The difference between the two trailer tire sizes is that the letter D in the first size you listed ST205/75D15 stands for bias ply and the letter R in the tire size that they put on your vehicle stands for radial.

LT-series tires support the higher air pressures that are common for towing. At a minimum, Load Range E tires are capable of safely supporting about 3,000 pounds. So, in the case of a dualie (six wheels), the tires collectively will provide more than sufficient grip for safely towing 18,000 pounds.
