Can you put drop bars on a triathlon bike?
Olivia House Can you use a triathlon bike as a road bike?
The triathlon bike geometry positions the saddle forward, nearly over the pedals, and the bars lower. This gives the tri bike rider a more aerodynamic position to slice through the wind with ease. A triathlon bike can still climb, descend, corner, and accelerate quickly, but not quite as well as a road bike.
Do I need aero bars for triathlon?
The answer is yes. On the bike leg of the triathlon, increasing your speed is all about reducing aerodynamic drag. And while there are dozens of small improvements you can make to your components and gear, the investment that gives the greatest returns is adding a good pair bicycle aero bars.
Do I need tri bars for a triathlon?
Since TRI bars help reduce wind resistance, the power needed is much less than having no TRI bars. As well improving you speed at the same power output, using TRI bars also effect the alignment of your lower limbs. The change of triathlon bike position will help the body to produce more power to the pedals.
Can you put drop down bars on a mountain bike?
Yes, drops can be slapped on any mountain bike, but they shouldn't. For instance, most MTBs have a geometry with a much longer reach, and generally don't fit as well with drop bars.
How To Fit Clip On Aero Bars | Upgrade Your Road Bike To A Triathlon Machine
Why dont mountain bikes have drop bars?
Here we get to the meat of the issue when doing a drop bar MTB conversion. Drop bars require road brakes/shifters, and your flat bar brake and shift levers won't fit (different bar diameter and some obvious ergonomic issues).
Can I convert a mountain bike to a gravel bike?
Some simple brake levers (make sure they're the right lever pull for your brake system) coupled with bar end shifters can transform the bike completely. Just be aware this will extend the reach, so you may need to fit a shorter stem to compensate.
Why do triathlon bikes have aero bars?
The triathlon bike also features aero bars that place the rider in an extremely aerodynamic position that they can be comfortable in for many hours at a time. Deep carbon fiber wheels are also used to increase aerodynamics of the triathlon bike.
How much faster will a tri bike make me?
The BikeRadar website claims the advantage a TT bike gives you is 60-70 watts at 40 km/h, that is, it takes 270-280 watts to ride a road bike at that speed and 220 watts to ride a TT bike. Translated into seconds, a TT bike gives you 9 seconds per kilometre advantage. This is six minutes in a 40 km time trial. Insane.
Are aero bars allowed in Ironman?
They share many of the same aerodynamic benefits of a triathlon bike, but have traditional drop bars. As you prepare for your IRONMAN event, install aerobars and adapt to the new position. On race day, you will be just about as aero as any other triathlon bike on course.
Are tri bars comfortable?
They're easily recognized, and very comfortable. On a road bike, aero bars look like a horizontal fork, mounted to the top of drop bars. The prone, forward-leaning position puts your body in an aerodynamic posture, lowering your wind resistance.
Are drops more aero than Hoods?
Riding in the drops offers a more aero position than riding upright with hands on the tops or relatively straight-armed on the hoods, and a more sustainable position for many riders compared to the horizontal-forearms-on-hoods position.
Are aero bars good for long rides?
Enjoy A Different Riding Position
Aero bars offer an entirely new riding position that's most beneficial for long days in the saddle. With your elbows and humerus (arm bone) supporting the majority of your upper body weight, you'll reduce strain on your arms, wrists and hands.
Are triathlon bikes faster than road bikes?
It's generally known that triathlon bikes have aerodynamic and geometric advantages that make them faster than road bikes. With all variables remaining equal over the bike leg of a triathlon, the tri bike wins in speed.
Why are triathlon bikes heavier?
A triathlon bike is heavier than a road bike by 2- 4 lbs or 1 to 2 kg. The reason is that the aim is to make a triathlon bike more aerodynamic rather than lightweight as it is in road bikes. The triathlon bikes come with bigger aerofoils and bigger frames than the road bike.
Is it hard to ride a triathlon bike?
Triathlon bikes are squirrelly aerodynamic beasts. They are great for speed, but frame geometry, riding down on aerobars and weight distribution (especially with bento boxes and bar-mounted hydration systems) can make tri bikes especially difficult to handle as compared to road bikes.
What is the difference between a TT bike and a tri bike?
The most significant difference is comfort. By design, triathlon bikes are made to go the distance. Triathletes often ride through hilly terrain, cover distances up to 112 miles during races and must transition to running quickly and efficiently. In contrast, time trial riders get off the bike completely spent.
Why don t Tour de France riders use aero bars?
Aerobars can be considered less safe for a few reasons: mostly because your hands are not on the brakes while riding in the aerobars. It also takes more practice and skill to maintain a straight line in the aerobars (especially in cross winds) due to how close your arms are together.
Why do pro triathletes use road bikes?
Road bikes are super lightweight and great for climbing
If you live somewhere that has any sort of undulating terrain, a road bike is a great tool to be able to fly up the climbs. Often times when climbing, even if on a triathlon specific bike, you are not in the aero position.
Is the Trek FX a gravel bike?
FX Sport 5 and 6 feature a gravel-specific Shimano GRX drivetrain designed for off-road use. Wide all-terrain 40c gravel tires let you adventure beyond the beaten path with confidence. FX Sport 6 comes with light and responsive Aeolus Elite carbon wheels for an added performance boost.

How do I make my mountain bike more road friendly?
11 Ways to Make a Mountain Bike More Road Friendly
- Tires and tire pressure – reduces rolling resistance.
- Saddle position (fore-aft, height) – for an efficient pedal stroke.
- Addition of a mirror – Ok, looks weird but makes things safer.
- Remove or lock out suspension – get more out of your pedal stroke.
How much faster are drop handlebars?
Over long distances, the energy-savings adds up. For example, maybe you can ride an extra 1 mile per hour on average with drops. Over the course of a one month bicycle tour you may be able to travel 200 miles further than you would with flat bars. This is significant.
