Do plunge routers use different bits?

Most plunge routers and fixed routers have a few basic things in common. The shank of a bit fits in a nonadjustable chuck of a router called a collet. You can get most types of router bits in either a 1/4-inch or 1/2-inch shank. Smaller routers often use a 1/4-inch collet.

How deep can you cut with a straight router bit?

What's the difference between a plunge router and a regular router?

In other words, if you set a fixed base router at a cut depth of 1/4", the router bit protrudes past the base 1/4" until you change the depth. A plunge base router is designed so that you can preset the cut depth and then lower (“plunge”) the bit into the cut with the router's base flat on the surface of the material.

Can any router bits fit any router?

Most routers out there come with two different sized router bits that are easily interchanged, but the router must accommodate both. If you have a smaller router, it likely only accepts ¼-inch collets. Outside of size, you can use a slew of different bits for any job.

What are spiral Upcut bits used for?

Can I use a laminate trimmer as a router?

A modern laminate trimmer can perform almost any task that a larger handheld router can do, with the caveat that the smaller machine may be limited in the size of bit that can physically fit within its collet and the base plate.

What is a Forstner bit good for?

Forstner bits are unique in their ability to drill overlapping holes, notches on the edges of a workpiece, and angled holes on the face of a workpiece (pocket holes, for example). The bit will cut whether or not the center spur is engaging the workpiece. This feature is unique to the Forstner bit.
