Can you have 6 café-au-lait spots without neurofibromatosis?

Indeed, anyone can have 1 or 2 cafe-au-lait spots without having neurofibromatosis. The only significance to the cafe-au-lait spot is that it suggests the possibility that a person might have NF1. People with NF1 usually have many cafe-au-lait spots, sometimes hundreds, and almost always more than 6.

Do café-au-lait spots always mean NF1?

The most common symptom of NF1 is the appearance of painless, coffee-coloured patches on the skin, called café au lait spots. However, not everyone with café au lait spots has NF1. The spots can be present at birth or develop by the time a child is 3 years old.

Can café-au-lait spots be normal?

Café au lait spots are harmless and normal, with some people having anywhere from one to three spots. But sometimes, these spots can indicate an underlying genetic problem.

Can you have a neurofibroma without having neurofibromatosis?

Solitary neurofibromas can also occur in people who don't have NF. These are called sporadic neurofibromas. Their cause is not known, although researchers are exploring the role of trauma. Most sporadic neurofibromas don't cause pain and can be managed without surgery or medication.

Ask Kate! Do my son's café au lait spots mean he has NF1?

Does everyone with NF1 get tumors?

An estimated 3% to 5% of people who have NF1 develop cancerous tumors. These usually arise from neurofibromas under the skin or from plexiform neurofibromas.

When is NF1 usually diagnosed?

If your child has only one sign and no family history of NF1 , your doctor will likely monitor your child for the development of any additional signs. A diagnosis of NF1 is usually made by age 4.

Can NF1 be mild?

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a genetic condition. It causes benign (not cancerous) tumors to grow in and under the skin, often with bone, hormone, and other problems. Most kids with NF1 have mild symptoms that don't limit what they can do.

How many café-au-lait spots are concerning?

Cafe au lait spots usually appear singly. More spots can occur in children with a genetic condition called neurofibromatosis or other conditions. If your child has six or more cafe au lait spots, ask your doctor whether your child needs a medical examination.

Can you have NF1 with no symptoms?

Signs of NF1 may be present at birth and almost always by the time a child is 10. Most people with NF1 have only mild signs and symptoms that need little or no treatment. But some can be more severe.

What can be mistaken for neurofibromatosis?

Legius syndrome also is called a neurofibromatosis 1-like syndrome because its symptoms are similar to NF1. Individuals with Legius syndrome have skin problems including brown birthmarks, called cafe-au-lait spots, and freckling, as well as mild learning problems and a larger head.

How can you test and confirm NF1?

A blood test is available for genetic testing to see whether a mutation in the neurofibromatosis type 1 gene is present. A diagnosis of neurofibromatosis type 1 is still possible in people who don't have an identifiable mutation. Testing can now also be performed for SPRED1.

When do freckles appear in NF1?

The freckles usually start to develop around the age of three and become more obvious as the child grows. The unusual areas of freckling have, until very recently, been considered to be characteristic of just NF1. However they are also present in a related condition called Legius syndrome (discussed below).

What do café-au-lait spots indicate?

Although these colored spots on the skin can be harmless, having six or more café au lait spots with freckles under the arm or around the groin could indicate an underlying genetic problem called neurofibromatosis type 1. This is a disorder that can affect the skin, nerves, and eyes.

Can a dermatologist diagnose NF1?

NF1 is also the most common cancer predisposition syndrome. The diagnosis is often made by dermatologists who also operate on cutaneous neurofibroma tumours.

What percentage of NF1 cases are mild?

Although two-thirds of NF-1 cases are mild, many parents come in fearing the worst. “Sometimes we see an affected parent and multiple children,” says Jordan, who usually treats pediatric patients and transfers them to Blakeley when they reach adulthood.

How accurate is genetic testing for NF1?

In cases where a clinical diagnosis of NF1 is inconclusive or needs to be confirmed, genetic testing is currently available that can diagnose NF1 with 95% sensitivity by sequencing a person's NF1 gene to identify mutations.

What follow up tests are needed for NF1?

Each examination should include blood pressure measurement, assessment of the skin for typical lesions (including early or growing neurofibromas), visual acuity check, evaluation of the eyes for evidence of proptosis or strabismus, and examination of the spine and extremities for any abnormalities.

Can you have multiple café-au-lait spots without neurofibromatosis?

Can you have café-au-lait spots without having neurofibromatosis? Yes. It is very common for people to have a few café-au-lait spots on their bodies without having an underlying condition like neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1).

What percentage of NF1 patients get neurofibromas?

Most are not a medical issue, but can cause pain and itching. Plexiform neurofibromas are less common, occurring in about 25% of NF patients. They can grow large, and can cause problems such as pressure on nerves and organs. These types of neurofibromas can become malignant in a minority of cases (10%).

Can you live a normal life with neurofibromatosis?

If there are no complications, the life expectancy of people with NF is almost normal. With the right education, people with NF can live a normal life. Although mental impairment is generally mild, NF1 is a known cause of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Learning disabilities are a common problem.

How common are café-au-lait birthmarks?

Approximately 10% of the general population has one or two café-au-lait spots. However, having more than 5 café-au-lait spots (referred to as multiple CALS) is rare.

Do café-au-lait spots run in family?

Abstract. Multiple café-au-lait spots have been observed in successive generations of several families without any other manifestations of neurofibromatosis (NF) or any other systemic disorder. The café-au-lait spots in these families segregate as an autosomal dominant trait.

How do you get rid of NF1 bumps?

There is no known treatment or cure for neurofibromatosis or schwannomatosis. Medication can be prescribed to help with pain. In some cases, growths may be removed surgically or reduced with radiation therapy.

What is Mosaic NF1?

Background: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a neurocutaneous disorder caused by loss-of-function mutation in the NF1 gene. Segmental or mosaic NF1 (MNF) is an uncommon presentation of the NF1 result of postzygotic mutations that present with subtle localised clinical findings.
