What kind of drill bit do I use for concrete?

Drill bits that can drill through concrete are called masonry bits. They are also good for drilling through brick and stone. Drill bits with a tungsten carbide tip are the strongest; when it comes to solid concrete, the sharper the better. Masonry bits cut holes through concrete in two steps.

Can you use any drill bit for concrete?

Drill a Guide Hole

When you purchase concrete screws, the correct size drill bit is often included in the pack. Otherwise, get a 5/32-inch bit for concrete screws that are 3/16-inch in diameter and a 3/16-inch bit for ¼-inch screws.

What is a black oxide drill bit used for?

Black Oxide Drill Bits – Basic and Inexpensive

This reduces friction between bit and workpiece, thereby speeding up the drilling process. Bits made with a black oxide coating are suitable for work on steel, copper, aluminum, brass, oak, maple, MDF, pine, PVC, polycarbonate, acrylic, ABS, nylon, and composite materials.

Can you use metal drill bits for concrete?

There are also different materials used to make the types of drill bits used for concrete, brick or tile. Almost all drill bits are made of metal. With few exceptions, metal bits are the most practical choice for every surface including wood, concrete, tile, glass and metal surfaces, as well.

Can you use metal drill bit on Masonry?

While you can use a metal drill bit on masonry, it should always be your last resort since prolonged usage will lead to the rapid dulling and wearing down of the bit. Your best option is to use a specially made carbide-tipped masonry drill bit.

Are black oxide drill bits any good?

High Speed

These drill bits work with an incredible speed, thanks to the uniform black oxide finish that ensures minimal friction during drilling. Thus, even though regular drill bits are known to deliver high speed, they don't stand a chance with the former, which drills three times faster.

Is black oxide or titanium better for drill bits?

Since they're the hardest between the two, titanium bits can handle every material that their black oxide counterparts can drill and more. In addition to wood, plastic, and PVC, titanium bits can easily drill through cast iron, stainless steel, and alloy tool steels.

What is the difference between black oxide and gold oxide drill bits?

Black oxide bits have 50% longer life than standard high speed steel bits. Click here to see available sizes. Gold Oxide – Offers added speed and durability for general purpose drilling applications in wood, metal and plastic and drills 3x faster with speed helix. Click here to see available sizes.

Should I use water when drilling concrete?

Though you don't need to water down the concrete, the water will help to collect and remove the drilling dust, which can be hazardous to your health and "clog" the drill bit. The water can also help to keep your bit from overheating, which in turn helps keep the bit from shattering.

What Colour are masonry drill bits?

Masonry bits have a toughened tip which is quite different to normal twist drills. There is no special colour. Most masonry bits we use are plain grey or silver.

Can I drill concrete without a hammer drill?

There are two effective methods of drilling into concrete without a hammer drill. The first method is to use a masonry bit with a regular drill for smaller holes and the second option is to use diamond or carbide core bits to drill large diameter holes.

Which drill bit is for masonry?

Masonry drills bits feature a arrowhead-shaped tip and are used for drilling holes into tough materials such as brick, stone and concrete. They are typically made from steel and used with a hammer drill, which hammers the bit into the surface as the drill bit rotates.

Can a cordless drill go through concrete?

In most cases, yes. While a cordless drill will not be as effective in drilling through concrete, it can get the job done. Your drill's battery power and other drilling features will play a role in its ability to drill into the concrete effectively.

What is the hardest drill bit you can buy?

Carbide (Carb) is the hardest and most brittle of the drill bit materials. It's used mostly for production drilling where a high-quality tool holder and equipment is used. It should not be used in hand drills or even drill presses.

What does a masonry drill look like?

Masonry bits look like larger twist drills with a slightly tighter corkscrew shape. You can identify them thanks to their wide arrow-shaped heads. They're commonly used in hammer drills to grind masonry down as they cut through it. You can use them on brickwork, stone, breeze blocks, and other hard stone surfaces.

What is black and gold drill bits?

Black & Gold metal drill bitst are made of heavy-duty High Speed Steel for drilling into a variety of materials including plastic, wood, and metal. Each bit features a 135° split point tip design to help reduce walking.

What is black oxide made of?

Hot black oxide for stainless steel is a mixture of caustic, oxidizing, and sulfur salts. It blackens 300 and 400 series and the precipitation-hardened 17-4 PH stainless steel alloys. The solution can be used on cast iron and mild low-carbon steel.

What is titanium drill bits used for?

Titanium drill bits are high-speed steel drill bits (HSS) that have a titanium oxide coating. They are very hard, and corrosion-resistant. They last much longer than regular HSS drill bits, and they are good for cutting through any metal, including metal sheeting.

How can you tell the difference between concrete and wood drill bits?

The easiest way to tell the difference is by looking at the cutting tip geometry. On a wood bit there will be a sharp pointed spur in the center whereas the masonry bit has a carbide tipped cutting edges that are ground to 135-degree angle.

Can you drill into brick with a normal drill bit?

If you're wondering how to drill into brick without a hammer drill, it's not as simple or straightforward, but it is still doable. Drilling into a brick wall with a regular drill requires a high-quality masonry bit at the least. With no hammer action, the tool has to rely on its turning speed.

What is the difference between a concrete drill bit and a masonry drill bit?

The big difference between a masonry drill and a concrete drill can be seen in the tip of the drill. On a masonry drill bit the cutting head of the drill is made of hardened metal. On a concrete drill, the cutting head is a very hard Widia plate.
